  1. Cheers, yeah there’s something about it, despite some of its oddities. I think the card is Evergreen styrene sheets. I bought them a while back from my LMS. Got two grades if I recall, A4 size sheet at 1mm and 1.5mm thickness. It’s good stuff, cuts with sharp scissors and the if you score it you can snap it apart too.
  2. Carried on with the cockpit today and started filling ejector pin marks. Also made some slightly oversized harnesses for the seats as I’d like them to be obvious through the glazing. I’ve trimmed the instrument panel to fit the decal and also cleaned up the yolks as they were covered in flash. Next up, finishing the cockpit then the aft section!! Thanks for looking.
  3. Thanks, Terry. As I begin to close the fuselage I’ll let you know if I think you should 😉 It does seem to be a great little kit considering it’s age and loads of potential for making it your own. Ha! Feel free to nick away!! I read your build and yes that falcon canopy improves the ‘hump’. Impressive brush work on the camo, looks really good. I’m debated about putting two torpedoes on her but you’re right; it’s a vintage kit so let’s keep it that way.
  4. Cheers - really enjoying making it up (somewhat) as I go along. I'm deciding whether to remove the raised panel lines and rescribe... I may keep them on the fuselage as it looks unique. The wings are crying out for it though. Thank you, me too. Although I do remember shying away from the camo. I think I just did the base colour with old Humbrol enamels and left it at that! Not this time though... It's a great little model and one that always stuck in my mind from my youth. Couldn't resist when Airfix re-released it. Great - good to have you on board. The new decals are really nice. Hopefully you'll enjoy the nostalgia from this. Thanks - glad to have you following along. That's amazing he still has it. Get a shot of it and stick it on here! Hand painted would probably be easier than the airbrush on this occasion but I'm going to use it as a 'technical' challenge! Crazy these kits are 60 years old plus and here we are in 2020 building one. Cheers, Ray. The box art shows just a two-tone camo but the instructions show three, with reddish-brown in the mix, I'm going for that... wish me luck.
  5. Some more detailing tonight and carried on referring to several interior pics but just made it my own, I.e. it’s not historically accurate! I’ve almost completed the radio compartment, finished the bulkheads for the bomb/mine bay and added some ribs to the fuselage. Test fitting is good and I’ll work my way back to the side gunners next time.
  6. Thanks so much, looking forward to seeing your go at the kit. Are you doing a WIP? I had sleepless nights because of that OD... or was it the 5 month old waking me up? 😂 Despite years of modelling, I always forget that the gloss cote always darkens but the flat always lightens. Case of holding ones nerve. Tamiya’s OD (XF-62) is a good colour for an out of the factory and larger scale model IMO but definitely needs lightening for any form of weathering or 1/72. I mixed with Khaki (XF-49) and sprayed on top to weather mine. I enjoyed doing the turbo chargers exhausts. A base of brown with lighter variations then some neat orange on the edges did it for me.
  7. That’s a really kind offer but yes, it’s gone. The work to recover it was beyond what I wanted to do (certainly at the time) as it would have required some form of stripping, as the NMF was bubbling in areas that would have been almost impossible to get to... I’d lost the will!! Still, one for another time.
  8. Having a lot of fun with this kit so far: a nice blank canvas to scratch build away. I’ve focused on what I believe is the radio operators compartment? Found some assortment of good interior shots and wen to work: I’ve scribed some slatted lines into the floor as per some reference shots and started to build extra bulkheads for what appears to be a bomb bay. Here are some of the port and starboard markings that needed removing. ‘Cleaned’ parts on the right: Thanks for looking, JB
  9. There’s going to be a lot of scratch building here as I didn’t realise how much you can see through. There’s ejector pin marks, part numbers, port/starboard letters... where’s my Stanley. This is the before: I’ll post some more depending on how I get on tonight!!
  10. Here we go then... a vintage classic I couldn’t resist and one to hopefully bring the mojo back after a disastrous attempt at building the new Mig 17. I first built one of these when I was 11 or something. I had been warned “not to buy any more Airfix” because to be fair to my parents, my room was FULL of them. I conned my poor Gran into taking me out to get this one and we agreed to keep it a secret, until when I got home I found one of the wing halves were duplicated meaning I couldn’t build the model. Dad to the rescue writing to Airfix back then (we’re talking early ‘90s), who sent me a replacement and Gran got a telling off... so this one is for Gran! This really is a simple kit and I will scratch build some interior detail as it’s far too sparse and I want to have the side door open, along with the exposed rear facing gun port.
  11. Thanks guys, I am disappointed too now I look back. Had the heat of the moment not got to me I might have spent the time trying to rescue it (again) but would have needed new decals. I’ve chalked this one up to experience and if I ever do it again I will make the following changes to the build: 1. Not fit the clear part in the belly, this stopped aligning the two fuselage halves as it’s oversized. Instead, I’d use clearfix post build to create the clear parts. 2. Ensure as much weight is in the fuselage as possible. 3. Ensure the ejection pins and seam on the intakes are filled, sanded and perfect before fitting in the fuselage - I actually got this down well and that was the part I was most pleased with. And on finishing... not model related of course: 1. De-tack until there is barely any stick at all before masking up AKEM or Gauzy!! 2. Never use enamel on AKEM or Gauzy!!! And of course... 3. Put it down and walk away even when it seems all hope is lost rather than giving it a ‘test flight’ 😡🤬
  12. Well... disaster struck today. Whilst using enamel thinners for the panel lining, the enamel ate away at the gauzy cote and AK NMF finish. I rescued, sanded back polished again, masked up for painting then dropped AKEM all over the model. It subsequently also ate away at everything else including decals to which rage set in and the model was discarded. Sorry chaps, this threads dead, Jim. Maybe I’ll go back to my other hobbies for a while. Thanks for following anyhow!
  13. Thanks, Nikolay. I do love a reference photo or two!! I like the cockpit build stages and then overall painting and weathering are by far my favourite bits, so it’s getting more enjoyable for me now!
  14. Cheers, over the Tamiya it’s pledge brush painted on this occasion, usually airbrush it but it’s a such a small model. This has resulted in some minor imperfections which will mean a light sanding before the Matt cote. On the AK NMF, AKs Gauzy agent, again brush painted. That’s impressive stuff despite its tendency to peal if masked!
  15. Tuesday night was modelling night once more, so some progress with decals after varnishing and correcting some camo issues at the weekend. As I like to do when I do a new model, I tried something different this time with some post shading using Tamiya clear smoke. Worked ok, but I will need to carry on with oils post matt cote. I also chipped the camo paint job back to NMF with a cocktail stick, after looking at reference photos. Decals went down ok on the NMF with a good dousing of Microsol and set. There are a lot of stencils to apply on the camo which just won’t be seen so I probably will leave them out.... we’ll see.
  16. Thanks for that, I was having trouble with the sparmax 20 as it was continually clogging with Tamiya paints no matter what I did, so replaced it with the 3 upon advice from airbrushes.com. It’s on the verge depending on paint to thinner ratio but when it flows well, it’s a treat to use as per this result. I haven’t read the book you recommended but I did read/hear about the tactics used by the North in the war from Col. Robin Olds autobiography and found it astounding. I will add to the list though! Considering what they were up against with American air tactics and hardware, they were pretty formidable. Hence why I had to have one to sit next to my Phantom 2!
  17. Got the main green on this week after pulling the AK Gausy varnish off with Tamiya tape, in efforts to protect the NMF on the wings 🤦🏻‍♂️ Airbrushed the darker blotches as per Airfix guidance. Quite pleased, used my new Sparmax 3 airbrush and it’s done a fine job.
  18. Filling, sanding and buffing has largely paid off. Some minor issues to deal with but the base NMF for under the wings and areas where I will chip the camo, is down:
  19. Tuesday means modelling night! Plus I sneaked a few hours here and there at the weekend. I’ve managed to glue the wings in place and spent some ‘fun’ time with the CA, filler and sanding sticks. Hopefully I’m there now, will see as I start putting paint on. I also used my very high grades of sanding clothes to buff the underneath of the wings as they’ll be NMF. They are nice and smooth now, so hoping I’ve caught all the gaps and scratches... will find out when I lay the first coat of AKEM. Glued the canopy tonight as well.
  20. Yeah, I have struggled with this one in comparison to their recent mustang, zero and Kate for example. Thanks on the cockpit though, I do like the finer detail. Yeah hopefully plain sailing now... oh hang on the underside of the wings are NMF 🤣
  21. A bit of progress this week. Using CA, I have filled and sanded down most of the problem issues on the fuselage and the wings. I will have to scratch build some raised detail on the nose as that needed to be removed to get rid of the seams. I’ve also added some detail behind the ejection seat and gunsight, not necessarily accurate but just covers the seams and adds a bit of interest. I’ve also re-scribed some lost lines underneath and doused with TamiyaET. There are still some fit issues where the clear parts on the belly which I will need overcome.
  22. Well... tonight was close the fuselage night. It didn’t go as well as I was hoping but it’s done. Had some real challenges getting the halves aligned, surprisingly the tub and exhaust assembly were not the problems, it just doesn’t seem to go together particularly well and the design is a bit stupid considering you’re trying to get a nice neat finish around the air intake. It’s made of the two halves and then a bottom bit followed by a three-quarter circle nose piece... there’s going to be a lot of clean up with the sanding sticks: I added another 5g of weight in the end before closing up. Here’s a nasty step, not helped by the clear parts. I have some nasty gaps to fill and some re-scribing to do!!
  23. Cheers, yes used the kit decals. The panel is flat so if you don’t use them, it’s off to the spare parts box for some raised detail control panels, if you have any! Was it? Looks like a fun little jet to fly... not that I’d have a clue!!
  24. I think I will do the same. Will add more to look at plus I could hide more weight in the front of them Added the clear part thanks. Just trying to see if there are any tints to the clear parts before sealing up the fuselage and wings. Can't find any reference shots - BM's, any ideas?
  25. Glad to have you joining, Allan. Great advice, I’m adding as much as I dare. Hopefully the landing gear won’t collapse! The instructions reference a little notch to align the tub in the body which appears to be doing the job but I will forget about the clear parts so cheers! Did you add the wing tanks? Not sure if the Vietnamese Migs had/needed them? More research needed before I bond the wings together...
