😣 indeed I meant ZF562!!! Pat

Just wondered if anyone might have any pics of Coventry’s Lynx ZF562 when she was onboard round about 1999-2000. Looks like she might have spotted Jessica Rabbit style noseart but not seen a decent pic. Pat

That will do for now!! Missing a GR5 ?

Very nice pair of Harriers - shot of them together perhaps??!! Pat

My take on the Trumpeter 1/72 kit of this beast of a recce bird. Main points from the build were the addition of vertical spreaders made from sprue to make sure that the rear fuselage does not have a valley running down its spine, and a little reshaping of the tail to correct it to the later vs early shape. It was also worth studying pics of the real aircraft being modelled as there seem to be some differences in avionics fits between aircraft (i.e. some have more protrusions at the rear end than others!). vig8 vig7 Decals came from a Wolfpak Decals sheet showing a colourful bird with bicentennial markings. One thing I found interesting about Vigilante markings is that the white areas on the upper surfaces of the wings seem to extend beyond the moveable control surfaces (the Trumpeter paint scheme has this wrong) and neither did the Wolfpak instructions show it. Also the all moving horizontal stabilisers are edged in white when you might expect them to be all white. Curious to know what the thinking was - it has the effect of making the plan view of the aircraft look smaller from above which perhaps was the rationale? vig6 vig10 Paint was trusty Gunze Aqueous LGG/ White with Insignia Red nose, and Burnt Iron on the slots and rear end/ burner cans. The Master brass pitot finished it off nicely. vig4 Hope you like - must have been quite a sight to see one of these launching/ recovering!!! vig1 vig3 Pat

Kaman Seasprite SH-2F - Airfix 1/72 - HSL-33
Pat C posted a topic in Ready for Inspection - Aircraft
This is my take on what is really a rather nice little Airfix kit of the Seasprite and still the only option (for the twin engine version) in 1/72. I think this kit was produced just before one of the several Airfix bankruptcies in the 80's (when it was owned by Palitoy?). I don't think Airfix produced any new tools up to this standard for quite some time afterwards. sprite6 The kit goes together very nicely and the only modifications were some scratchbuilt mirrors to replace the clunky kit one, and some modification of the landing gear as most aircraft seem to have the landing gear covers removed and these are rmoulded into the gear legs on the kit. Courtesy of Britmodeller Robert an extra drop tank was also added as this aircraft usually carried two rather than the one provided in the kit. spritea2 All over Gunze Aqueus Engine Grey was used for the colour scheme and the decals for this HSL-33 machine largely came from the Microscale sheet on the Seasprite, again with some modifiication to the code numbers to represent an aircraft of which I could find actual photographic evidence. Getting the striped decals on the tail surfaces was quite traumatic!! spritea9 sprite8 Hope you like!! sprite4 sprite7 spritea1 Pat- 15 replies

I'm not sure why but the AEW version of the Gannet has always been one of my favourite aicraft and I was very pleased when Sword came up with the first injection moulded version of the AEW3 in 1/72. gann4 This version of the kit came with a resin radar operators bay which was a very nice addition although makes avoiding tail sitting very tricky - mine is stuffed full of ball bearings and there is even tungsten putty in the spinner and it only just remains on its wheels. gann2 by pat cauthery, on Flickr The fit of the kit is relativey good for a limited run kit - I found it difficult to get the fuselage all closed up at once and so glued aeverything but the radome together, and then dealt with that separately. The Sword instructions were also rather vague in parts - fitting the fairings around the exhausts had me scratching my head for a while, but by reference to a few pics on the internet was able to work out what that area was supposed to look like. Had some trouble with the finlets as well - they had a canted backwards stance which I did not think correct and I had to resort to some firm sanding to get them more in line with the real thing. gann8 by pat cauthery, on Flickr Paint was Xtracrylix XDSG over Gunze Aqueous Sky, with the trim being Humbrol Roundel Blue and white decal stripes applied to the finlets. The rest of the decals for this machine from D Flight 849 NAS operating from HMS Eagle came from the very nice set by Alley Cat models. gann1 by pat cauthery, on Flickr Hope you like Pat gann9 by pat cauthery, on Flickr gann7 by pat cauthery, on Flickr gann5 by pat cauthery, on Flickr

Very nice Merlin - having made this kit I’m surprised you thought the fit was good - I don’t think you can have built it right 🤪 Pat- 9 replies

Very nice Demon - how did you find the Mission Models paint? I tried it and found that without the polyurethane additive it just rubbed off with a damp cloth and with the additive it clogged the airbrush!! Pat

Very nice Demon - not sure I’ve seen the Sword kit built up yet. Will need to bring mine to the top of the stash! Pat

Grumman Cougar F9F-8B - Hasegawa 1/72
Pat C replied to Pat C's topic in Ready for Inspection - Aircraft
I had better crack on with the Hasegawa F-14A to join the pride! It has more bits than the other three put together though! -
Lovely job Fred - inclined to agree on the Fujimi vs Airfix Phantom as well. Pat

You can get generic white British letter decals from Hannants to sort out the “VL”. One thing I have learned through much practice is that there is no modelling disaster that cannot be fixed!! -

The Yellow Bird Phantom is my favourite and yours looks great. I have lost count of the times I have screwed up a critical decal and had to buy replacements so you’re in good company!! I’m pretty sure I have a spare yellow bird if you are really stuck. Pat -
Bristol Sycamore 1/72 - S&M Models
Pat C replied to Pat C's topic in Ready for Inspection - Aircraft
If you want me to knock up a pic of you mowing the lawn to show her let me know!! Thanks for all the comments guys - the Sycamore does have a bit of a “soviet” look to it I agree. Interesting to read about Hafner’s idea for designing the shape of the fuselage to counteract the rotor torque rather than using a tail rotor. Wonder if that would have worked in practice. -
Another one from me, this time the vintage Hasegawa kit of the F9F-8 Cougar. This was an old boxing from Collectakit with knackered decals so I decided to find a Cougar in a scheme that I could paint myself and then use generic or home printed decals for the markings. coug8 Kit is fairly simple but very easy to put together as you would expect from 80s era Hasegawa. I needed a blob of Milliput to round off the nosecone as the kit one has an indentation to fit a nose probe. The Hase kit of the Grumman Panther has rather over-prominent cannon barrels in the nose - for the Cougar they went the other way and there is no sign of any barrel at all so I filled the blast troughs with some stretched sprue. coug5 There is a very good photo of this VF-94 aircraft in the Naval Fighters volume of the Cougar and the masking required is relatively simple to pull off! this sheme Note the codes are squared off at 45 degrees rather than 60 degrees as you would normally expect to find on USN aircraft. Paint was Gunze LGG over white, Gunze Insignia Red for the colourful bits, with the walkways sprayed in Xtracrylix Dark Gull Grey. coug10 Hope you like!! coug3 coug12 Pat coug7 With older sibling coug2 3 Grumman Fast Cats!! coug1

Been ages since I posted anything here so will try to make amends! This is the S&M Models Bristol Sycamore kit as XL829 based in Aden in the SAR role in the early '60s. syca9 The S&M Sycamore is a lovely little kit - its fairly simple but critically the fit of the glazing is excellent. The one criticism I has was that after fiddling with the undercarriage and being unable to get it to resemble the sit of the real thing, it dawned on me that the main wheels were too large. I replaced these with some from the Airfix Bird Dog and instantly I thought it made a big improvement. syca8 Kit comes with both flat and bulged doors in order that a number of variants can be made. The decals in my boxing were for a 202 Sqd aircraft complete with "mallard" insignia but 202 never flew the Sycamore and I think this may have been painted up for a display rather than an operational aircraft. As I wanted to build a Sycamore as it would have looked in operation I sourced most of the decals from the spares box with the tail warning being sprayed first in red, and then individual white lettering and white decal strip edging being applied (as the kit tail warning was wrong for the aircraft I was modelling). Paint was all over Xtracrylic RAF Rescue Yellow. syca4 I also added some detail to the stirrup steps up to the cockpit and the nose aerials were made form bits of strip and stretched sprue. syca1 Hope you like! syca5 syca6 Pat

Nostalgia, it's not what it used to be...
Pat C replied to TonyW's topic in Ready for Inspection - Aircraft
The trouble with the Britains figures is that I discovered as a 10 y.o. that they broke apart when fired on with an airgun. Thus they were progressively all "converted" in rather grisly fashion to be 1/32 victims of conflict.... -

That is a great set. I liked some of the Matchbox sets as well although the figures seemed to have been better fed than the Airfix ones! There is an excellent mean looking US Army officer in a greatcoat firing his M1911 who would often lead the way of my plastic invasion force!! Pat -
Yes I have spotted the rather obvious difference on the 145 now!!
