A FINNISH MIG 21 BIS - EDUARD 1/48 SCALE
whiskey replied to Luiz's topic in Ready for Inspection - Aircraft
Beautiful. I believe the green camo on the Finnish MiG-21 is what made me start to like the aircraft. Great job -
@Hoops thanks. I didn't know that they had stopped and the reason. The last time I saw them flying at Pensacola for an air show they did it and I had watched them perform with the JATO several times before. Of course this was almost 20 years ago I suppose.

I remember my grandfather telling me a few stories about performing JATO take-offs while flying a Herc. I do t remember the stories themselves but I remember he told me. The Blue Angels Fat Albert does, or used to, do JATO take-offs too.

Thanks for the info on the kits fellas. I'll probably just buy a couple of the conversion sets and wait on the kits themselves. At least this way I can clear some shelf space by getting rid of the couple Monogram kits I already have.

If only one could get a Hasegawa 1/48 TA-4J, at a reasonable price as well.

Hi Craig @modelling minion. I can't say that there is at this time. I do have a few MiG-21s stashed away but those are for other future projects and I can't think of any other USSR aircraft I possess. There subjects, Su-17/22, Su-27 series, MiG-29s, MiG-31, etc. etc. that I want to model but I don't have any of them right now and probably won't be acquiring them before this pops up on the calendar. If that changes I'll throw my hat into the ring.

I have that Aeromaster sheet. I've always wanted to do either this Phantom or the USMC one that got zapped. Definitely watching this!

Convair B-58 Hustler (Italeri 1/72)
whiskey replied to billn53's topic in Ready for Inspection - Aircraft
Man this thing is simply amazing! Wonderful wonderful job! -
Seeing how this continues more and more discussion I'm really starting to grow an itch of producing a "what-if" service aircraft. For some reason I have been meaning towards an A-7 with updated avionics, cockpit, ECM, etc, etc.

No the AH-1P retained the dual chin mounted turret from the start. The AH-1E (Enhanced Cobra Armament System or ECAS) was exactly the same but introduced the M197 turret. The rocket system was not operational in the ECAS for several years however. I'm sure that the secret to the missing parts on the Museum's bird was just salvaged parts for other Cobras.

So I went through some of my old info (not at home and my memory is rusty but I found everything I was looking for and here it goes: AH-1S(Prod)=AH-1P Canopy-Flat Plate Wing Armament- M261 19-shot pods, M260 7-shot pods, Outboard pylons changed to allow for M-65 TOW system Tail Rotor-Larger paddle type blades Misc.-Larger bulge for the tail rotor gearboxes Introduction of Kaman K-747 main rotorblades. (The older B-540 blades were used up to the AH-1F) WSPS (Wire Strike Protection System) Cable cutter modification APR-39 on the front of the helicopter and back of the tailboom Slightly larger elevators than the -G Now here's the gig with your aircraft at the Museum. It's actually a re-manufactured AH-1G to AH-1S(Prod) or -P standards completed at the Amarillo plant.. The AH-1P was produced from 1977 to 1978 and only 100 air frames at that. And it also weighed about 200-200 pounds more than an actual new AH-1P aircraft. Not exactly relevant to the model as it won't show but it's an interesting footnote.

Wow this is fun! I believe that the AH-1 kit from Monogram does not have the correct tail boom you need to build a -P as it still retained the length of the -G's. I may be wrong but that's another reason why you don't see any builds of that kit into a -G using other kits because of it (also because the tail rotor blades and the gear box are larger than the -G's.). I do know for a fact that the tail is actually wrong even for the -S or -F (whichever one you wanna call it). The -P does not have the triangle (antenna or part of the WSPS?) mounted on top of the nose like on the Monogram kit. In fact, the -P doesn't have any of the WSPS I'm aware of. Are you planning on tackling the HSS inside the cockpit?

Hasegawa's intakes are spotty. Sometimes you get a kit that they fall into place without issues, and sometimes you get one that goes horribly wrong. I'm glad to see that yours didn't give you a lot of fuss and were able to use them. AM intakes aren't cheap these days. -

Those are the kit intakes? -
Thanks for the detail Anil, duly noted. I picked it up "used" but it's still new, the previous owner used it twice before deciding it wasn't for him. I think I bought basically because of the sweet price that I got it for ($80usd). I've already got my eyes set on a much, much better one that is extremely affordable so I may just turn around and sell this.

Great job. I've got one waiting to be built as well. Hope mine comes out as good as yours.

A good paint job to give the seats some character even while the pilots are in it helps a lot. -
So I finally bit the bullet and ordered my first compressor. The funny bit is that I'll finally be able to use the Iwata HP-CS airbrush I bought 2.5 years ago with it. Anyway I bought the Iwata Ninja Jet air compressor. I figured that will be a decent starter, and hopefully nothing I can't handle. Is there anyone with experience with this model out there that can share some pointers, tips, things to avoid, etc.? I'd appreciate it.

As often as that is stated I can't recall ever seeing a photo of an F-4G Wild Weasel fitted with the AN/ARN-101 system.

IF (and that's a big IF) I have the time and am able to complete the other group builds I'm committed to, I'll add a VF-74 or VF-103 F-14 from their 1985 cruise (whichever one I can find decals for) that encompassed the "Achille Lauro/ Egyptian Air flight" incidents. -
I've been looking for those decals for ages haha!

Man this is one beautiful Cobra. I love how you did on the weathering, not too much and definitely not too little. If only this was available in 1/48, they would sell like hot cakes!
