Doctor: Mr Smith we have your test results back and I’m afraid it isn’t good news. I can only give you Ten!
Mr Smith: Ten? Is it weeks? Months? Years?
Doctor: Nine......Eight.......Seven.......

Thanks for the helpful advice and links Flaps out and PhoenixII
I have been just mucking about with the builders insulation foam I was able to source and very quickly realised that to build anything with it would take a whole new way of thinking and working. Not used to just coming up with something without a set of instructions! These diorama builders must plan everything to the last detail.
Thanks again guys all your tips are of great benefit.

**UPDATE**
After my question above about what the foam used in the video on the AK Interactive YouTube channel was it seems like AK have just released ready made and pre-cut foam sheets for modellers.
There are varying grades and thicknesses designed for different diorama uses. Some are meant for bases and others seem to be like balsa foam and can be used for buildings and roads.
I have not used these yet but here is a link;

At the Airfix stand at the 2018 ScaleModelWorld I put the following suggestions into their new kits suggestion box;
1/48 Bristol Beaufort
1/48 Lockheed Hudson
1/48 P-40F/L (long tailed variant)
If any of these appear anytime soon then I am taking the credit.
Cheers

Can I ask if anyone knows whether crew figures are supplied with the Airfix boxing?

Thanks Black Knight and Dogsbody and Troy Smith and Murdo for your replies to this thread. All greatly appreciated and enlightening.
I am beginning to realise that building dioramas means you use products that aren't necessarily specific modelling products and you find things that are not always stocked in model shops.

Hi Troy,
Many thanks for that hugely helpful and informative reply. I have no experience of the building trade or the materials used in that field so would never have known about things like PIR boards. Can I assume it is something that builders might buy in bulk?
I shall set my sights on house building sites or builders merchants now and see what I can source. Hopefully I can find some and try my hand at a diorama.
The foam getting used in the AK Interactive video looks really good for diorama bases.

Thanks Black Knight for your reply.
How on earth would you get expanding foam into such a neat block? I have used that stuff to block up a hole in my flat and it is terribly messy stuff.

After every model show I attend I come away with a desire to build dioramas but I have little idea how to accomplish this goal.
As part of my online research I came across the AK Interactive YouTube channel (video link below) and the guy who does the videos demonstrating their diorama products uses some sort of foam as a base. It seems to be able to be cut and carved and painted and readily take their groundwork products and it has a decent depth to it. As a diorama novice I thought I might try something of this ilk to practice and to learn.
My question to the Britmodeller members is to ask what the foam being used in the above video is? I have looked in arts and crafts shops and B&Q but with no success.
Without knowing for certain and from my own investigations I am guessing it is an insulation foam used in house building? Do any of the diorama builders on here know what the foam is and where in the UK I might be able to buy it?
Thanks in advance for reading this thread and for any help the users can provide. -
I have always been confused by which variants of the P-40 were used by the RAF Desert Air Force.
Can I use this P-40E kit by Italeri to make an accurate British North African variant or would it take all manner of add-ons and conversion work to be able to do such a thing?
Just wondering.

Thought the ‘all being on the spectrum’ comment was interesting too as I have had my suspicions about myself and modellers in general for a long time. Might explain why at times we are more likely to sit home obsessing about modelling details and colours and decal options and why many of us don’t have wives or girlfriends. The spectrum line and the line about the teenagers maybe one day getting a woman is the reason I have not told anyone about this programme. I know only too well what the reaction to those lines would be
I still can’t believe that I was not in the shots of the Airfix Hellcat reveal at Telford as I was stood right there as the banner was unfurled. Maybe yet make it into part 2.
I am bit concerned for Telford 2019 though - now that ScaleModelWorld has been featured in a mainstream BBC programme and that people who had never heard of it are now aware of its existence, will many more show up in 2019 just out of curiosity?
Can we expect the queues to be even bigger this year? I know I am being entirely selfish but the good thing about model shows is that it is for the most part enthusiasts only. Anyway enjoyed the programme immensely and am looking forward to part two.

Saw the guys doing the filming of the Hellcat reveal at the Airfix stand at Telford so will be interesting to see what they show and what if anything they say about Hornby as a company. If this programme makes Hornby's future look bleak we might all be stocking up on Airfix kits by the end of the show.

I want them to re-release the 1/48 Tornado Gr.4 - I started it, made a cod of it and want to try again.

Don't think anyone prior to Telford foresaw the release of a 24th scale Hellcat. Beginning to wonder if Airfix are seeing the potential of tempting the American market with more American subjects now. For example in the last few years across different scales we have had a B-17 Flying Fortress, a B-25 Mitchell, a P-51D Mustang, a Curtiss Tomahawk and now the F6 Hellcat...whatever can we expect to see next?
-
Saw both of these models at Telford on Saturday and both look amazing both in terms of detail AND size.
Ultimately there is nothing you the modeller can do about these kits...yes they are going to cost a packet, yes a 1/32 Lancaster can't ever be anything but huge but all you can do if you really love the Lanc is to ask yourself...can I justify the cost? Do I have enough space? Am I prepared to commit the time it will take to complete one of these? A 1/32 Lanc is not really something to reside on the shelf of doom is it?
If you can answer yes to these questions then get one because a 1/32 Lancaster will be pretty much a once in a lifetime modelling experience.

Just back up the road from having been at Telford today and was stood at the Airfix stand as the announcement was made and the banner unfurled. To be homest I think most were initally a little underwhelmed at the news - myself included - but as the day went on and after my several trips to the Airfix stand I changed my mind and think they have a real cracker in the pipeline and many will really look forward to the release of this kit.
The sprues and built up model looked great and Airfix will be able to sell this to the US market in US navy markings and here in the UK in Royal Navy colours. While 1/24 scale may be a problem for some many may be tempted to try this kit because the model does come with the wings folded option. Great for those where space is at a premium.

Why haven't one of the major bookmakers not opened betting on this? I mean if you can bet on things like the winner of Strictly or the Christmas No.1 then surely the Airfix 2019 product announcement merits a market?
Maybe we'll all turn up at Telford only to find out there are more bookmakers in attendance than actual traders and the halls will be filled with guys doing tic-tac.
I'll get my coat.

Maybe the announcement will be that Airfix have acquired the rights from Disney to produce Star Wars kits and 2019 will see them knocking out a load of X-Wings and TIE fighters.
Just a thought

I can see the pics and the model is a stunner.

At the end of all of this and once we know what the new Airfix product announcement is and assuming at least one of us has gotten it right, that person is going to have the pleasure of coming back on and saying 'na na na na na na...I told you so' and then promptly make rude gestures to all the rest of us who were wildly off the mark.
Anyway while were are on the subject of being wildly off the mark...I hope...
...is there any chance the Bengal Lancer might be getting a 21st century makeover?
Just a thought

It would be a terrible disappointment if after all these musings and words and speculation and postings about this kit and that kit and what the Airfix 2019 product announcement will be or won’t be or should be, that we then all turn up at Telford and at one minute past eleven on the Saturday after the dancers have exited the area and the curtain drops on the glass cabinet (I imagine that is how Airfix do their product announcements), if after all that we then find out that the all-new Airfix kit for 2019 is the Granger Archaeopteryx.
In 1/144th scale.
I’ll get my coat.-

5 hours ago, Scott_ said:
All this talk of large planes at the Museum of Flight (B-47s, B-52s, B-29s) overlooks another large plane that they have. Unlike the others mentioned (well excluding the few RAF B-29s) one that saw plenty of service in the RAF. And a subject similar to an existing catalogue item that has been consistently selling well
They have a B-17F

Just think of how sweet a Coastal Command version would be...
Now you mention it a B-17F is probably a good call as to what the Airfix Telford announcement might be. They did the G model a few years ago and adding the older F seems the logical next step.
I for one would welcome a decent B-17F kit.

If Airfix thought there was a market for a 1/48 Walrus then surely there is room in the marketplace for either a long tailed 1/48 P40-F, a 1/48 Lockheed Hudson or even a 1/48 Beaufort!

Hi Paul,
Thanks for taking the time to post the information about the markings and the colour schemes. That is the first I have seen anything anywhere about what is in the box and helps immensely.
Much appreciated,
