  1. Seriously impressive work here tomprobert, makes me want to do a C17!
  2. Great collection going here, nice to see a fellow new guy (and another falklands DD build, I do like that kit).
  3. Flashman

    Pin's 2015

Really nice work, a couple of more unusual items there and that 747 finish is superb!
  4. Fantastic close-in painting techniques here with the weathering, great technical work!
  5. Thanks all for the feedback! Glad you like the line-up, if I'm nothing else I'm varied...
  6. Have further pushed on, comrades! Constructed the cockpit: Put it in the forward fuselage half which I had clipped out and cleaned up- notice the little bombardier's seat area at the front which marks this out as a traditional bomber design: And closed it up: Clipped out the fuselage halfs and cleaned them before closing it up: And fitted the forward fuselage section containing the cockpit to the fuselage: Was actually a pretty good fit. I then fitted on the tailplanes, wings and those distinctive engines. Required some filler but in the end I was able to get it onto a pretty good fit: It was at this point that I realised that I had forgotten to put the seats in. Fortunately the places that they went were accessible to put them in with the thing closed up, I will use tweezers to get the bombadier's seat in through the nose. I wanted to have the aircraft with landing gear down and bomb bay open so imagine my joy when I saw that I would have to cut the one-piece doors! They cut really easily and after a bit of filing them looked fine in my opinion: Until next update! -Flash
  7. So this may appear to be cheating in some ways as I haven't been on Britmodeller at all for the last year but nonetheless I will include everything from the past year. It's been a pretty good year: over the summer I totally redesigned the loft to turn it from a junkroom into a dedicated modelling space/mancave which has been a fantastic asset for modelling and has improved my work no end! So, here we go (with the builds that I think are good enough, at least!): Airfix 1/48 Grumman EA6B prowler: (My first 1/48!) 1/72 Academy Mig-27 Flogger: 1/72 General Atomics Reaper and Predator UAVs (both Italieri): 1/72 Airfix Hawker SiddleyHarrier AV8S, Spanish Navy scheme 1/350 HobbyBoss Astute Class SSN: 1/72 Zvezda Sukhoi Su24 Fencer: For halloween, something a bit sinister- 1/72 Revell Horten Go229: 1/350 HobbyBoss Los Angleles Class SSN: 1/72 Academy Vought A7D Corsair II: 1/48 Academy F4B Phantom II (Vietnam group build): And I'm currently working on a Tu22 (come and see it in WiP!) but didn't fancy speed building after the Phantom build! It was great to finally join Britmodeller and I must say I was surprised with how warm a welcome I reciveved, my nervousness about feedback soon disappeared. Can't wait for 2016... -Flash
  8. Very nice work both! The modelsvit tu22 kit is certainly superior and I thought this looked a bit short, but I'm not going to be doing any modifications largely due to the lack of skill for a 2cm extension! I will definitely be adding the modelsvit kit to my 'to purchase' list though.
  9. Potentially do it in an SEA camo scheme for a vietnam what-if as per S5's suggestion? Would look pretty good.
  10. Thanks Cossack, was wondering about that! Wouldn't mind getting the anti-shipping one at some point.
  11. Thanks for all the feedback everyone, feel free to post it, I would love to see it!
  12. So with my Vietnam GB Phantom finished I've waded into my next project. Recently I've been getting into Soviet aviation and combined it with my interest in Cold War Bombers with this Tu22, which I purchased on here about a month ago. I'm quite interested in the aircraft, which has got a futuristic, unusual look to it quite in contrast to earlier designs and so have decided to go ahead with it. I will be building it in the Soviet metallic finish (as opposed to the desert camo Libyan/Iraqi schemes which are in the Revell kit of the aircraft). Here's the kit and what I've done so far: Not sure why the word Bomber is in inverted commas: Unboxing: Decals a bit minimalist: So I made a start by assembling the wings and the tailfins: Required a fair bit of cleaning up where the mould attachments were on the leading edges but with clippers and a file you can hardly notice tailfins were a lot neater and the wings are nicely detailed- the sticking-out bits (to use the technical term) make it look a bit different to the usual more empty wings that you see. Lots of clamps used and some tamiya tape applied to the wing fuel tanks (I think they are) to keep them together while they're drying. Overall it's come together quite neatly though. I also assembled the cockpit which I will be painting in the Soviet cockpit green, and then primed it: The dashboards- not massively detailed but then again it's quite literally physically impossible to see when the aircraft is closed up as far as I can tell anyway (certainly in the case of the rear one): These will be black and I'll use some drybrushing and so on to bring out the dials, should look ok. I went out to buy some green paint for the cockpit today after doing this- it's not exactly a common color to have in your inventory. Now, back to it! -Flash (P.S. General 'The Legend' Melchett, famous bomber maestro, is as many of you know a great fan and expert of the Tu22 (why I don't know, it's a right ugly aircraft- JOKING!) so hopefully he'll be having a look at some point and if that doesn't put me under pressure I don't know what will)
  13. Right, just in the nick of time I've managed to get this build finished on the deadline day so here it is! (along with a couple more WIP shots) Painted the other bits on the fuselage and wings, put the landing gear on and started to climb the huge but rewarding mountain of decals: Pretty happy with the way the cockpit turned out in the end, shows that it can look passable without spending loads of time detailing/ buying aftermarket: Wish I'd not forgotten to do scratch seatbelts though. Finished product- Phantom F4B of VF-111 Sundowners for the 2015 Britmodeller Vietnam Group Build: And with my only other 1/48 build, the old Airfix EA6B Prowler: Am overall very happy with how it turned out, one or two errors here and there but I think I did OK! Cheers to everyone that had been watching the build. Have pretty much chosen my next one and hope to start tomorrow so watch Work in Progress to maybe see something large and shiny... -Flash
  14. Great work, have got one in the stash and will be doing it at some point- out of interest did you paint the engine pods on or off?
  15. Cheers Jens, have done them in flat white so a simple gloss coat will soon sort that out!
  16. Masked up and sprayed the underside with Humbrol White: Then remasked and sprayed the topside with Humbrol 64 Grey: Have also started painting the munitions off-camera.
  17. Built the tailfin: Starting to look like a Phantom now: Did the wheels while it was drying: and then started to climb the mountain of underwing stores:
  18. Just posting now what I did yesterday after I did the last update, have pressed on significantly but when I finished in the mancave last night I just thought 'buggrit, I'll upload tomorrow!' so here we are. Worked on the engine fans- painted in Humbrol Dark Sea Grey then XF-56 and humbrol washes and powders. And put the intakes together: Gave the same metal treatment to the other engine parts, exhaust cones aren't detailed and could probably do with aftermarket. Pretty happy with the way the metal turned out though (this picture is about midway through the weathering process. No pun intended ). The fuselage assembly was top-and-bottom as opposed to left-and-right which is good for eliminating seams. Firstly I had to join the forward cockpit fuselage section to the underside of the fuselage with what looked like a far too thin join area- I was sweating considerably but Tamiya glue prevailed and it held! While that was going on I built the actual air intakes (what I had thought were the intakes were the internal bit that you don't see): Then it came to the moment of truth: the great closing-up. Luckily it turned out better than I had dared to hope. I then put in a considerable amount of compacted blu-tack as weight (hope it's enough!) and put the nosecone on- could have benefited form something to help it stay on. I then started on the seats- nothing special in terms of detail but the head rest area is a bit better and that's the part you see. Painted the sides of the seat black and used Tamiya Field Grey on the cushions, thought that would be good enough. I then did as bit of drybrushing. I may make rudimentary seatbelts from tape. Onwards and upwards now! -Flash
  19. Up for this in a heartbeat, I'm a cold war obsessive with a dozen different stash items that would fit the bill.
  20. Great work, nice to see another bomber enthusiast! Have got one of these in the stash contending for my first project of 2016.
  21. So yesterday I had family yuletide distractions but was able to kick off bright and early today- I started with the cockpit. Cockpit tub is nothing special: Dashboard is done in that damned black plastic but looks pretty detailed: Assembled the cockpit details: Dashboard sprayed with Humbrol 64: Managed to bring out the details with a mixture of painting with Tamiya XF-1, drybrushing with XF-1 and XF-24 Sea Grey, thinned Humbrol grey wash, and used Tamiya X-19 smoke and Humbrol Gloss Clear on the dials (along with a bit of flat red). Sprayed the cockpit tub with Humbrol 64 and gave it a bit of dimension with wash, powder and drybrush weathering: Built the seats: they're actually quite detailed although it's hard to see it in the shiny black MCP plastic, with ejector handles. Not sure that I missed out on much not using aftermarket to be honest, although some seatbelts would come in handy. Gave the landing gear bay parts a blast of citadel Skull White paint: And weathered them down with powder, drybryshing and a bit of wash: Built and painted the wing landing gear- Humbrol 164 undercoat, Tamiya XF-56 Metallic Grey and then weathered primarily with Humbrol powder: Fitted them into the assembled gear bays: And into the underwing mounts: I then sprayed the insides of the intakes with Skull White over Humbrol 64 and also did the fans which I have not photographed (forgot):
  22. Right, finished the corsair today so will be finally starting this tomorrow. Just a few box pictures- certainly looks like an impressive kit, also includes a decent volume of munitions which is nice.Only issue is the MCP pre-coloured kit- no doubt this is has been covered extensively by others so I don't want to get hung up on it but all I can say is that it was a very bad idea on the part of academy! Anyway, I don't want to rant, so here we go- I will march to war tomorrow morning!
  23. Done in Tamiya and Vallejo acrylics as usual- brush painted. I attempted to get a faded look from the humid south east asia air by blending together thinned paint in slightly different stages. Am pretty happy about the way it turned out aside from the gap on the underside, which I completely forgot about, and the fact that for the life of me I can't get rid of the gloss finish- will try spraying the rattle can humbrol matt varnish, as matt cote and XF-86 don't seem to be able to do it. Now on to the Vietnam GB!
