  1. I like seeing all the steps and missteps, sometimes the mistakes and corrections are the most enlightening part. Garry c
  2. I agree with Elger, this is a very inspirational build. While following along I was inspired to start work on the 1/72 Airfix P51. Applying what I learned here and motivated by the constant updates, I managed to finish the build. I have at least 8 unfinished models so finishing one is rare. I would like to thank you for your passion, your skill, and your persistence. If you are interested, my lesser quality effort is here ; http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235036187-mustang-airfix-172-p51-d/ Garry c
  3. Love the exhaust manifolds! Needs more dust in the paint and maybe some glue stains or pet hairs. Well done. Garry c
  4. Thank you, I used AK white putty which shrinks when it dries, normally this is very frustrating but in this case some of the lines are barely visible which is just what I wanted. Garry c
  5. The control stick broke into 3 pieces. Next time I plan to use a soldering iron to melt the large sprues about 5mm around the column before I try to remove the piece. The radio mast was a blob, measured the length and made a replacement out of .4mm sheet styrene, lost it during unmasking and made another after the rest of the plane was finished. Garry c
  6. Thank you for your comments, the mud is Vallejo English Uniform, the white decals were finished with ash coloured weathering powder to tone them down. Garry c
  7. Watching the work in progress by Olivier de St Raph on the Missouri Aramada, I was compelled to start working on the Blue nosed P51-D from Airfix. The high quality work and information in that thread kept my enthusiasm going long enough to actually finish the kit. Starting with the interior; Left and right drop tanks don't make sense, so the right gas cap was filled and re-scribe d on the left. The panel lines on the wing were filled and the wheel wells painted. First time using a rivet tool also the elevator counter-balance was etched. Charlie in the foreground as Isis sees all. Enough you say? On with the show. Vallejo White Aluminum for the body and Dull Aluminum for the wings. Unfortunately the Testors flat clear lacquer reacted with the floor polish used for the transfers causing fine cracks and an instant war-weary look. Rivets on the flaps are an absolute must. Thanks for looking. Garry c
  8. Olivier, the restoration photo is the top of the wing, the period photo is the bottom. Air flow over the top of the wing is much more critical than the bottom. Both the restoration and the period photo agree with this diagram discussed earlier in post #313. Hope this helps, Garry c
  9. Olivier, the fin fillet is the wedge shaped piece added to the front of the vertical stabilizer(rudder). When the fuselage was cut down for the bubble canopy, the aircraft lost some directional stability. The fillet was added to reduce the problem. Post #515 has examples of the different styles of fin fillet. On the p-51 in post #519 (which has no fin fillet), I do not see a partial repaint, this looks like the paint is oxidizing, like when you brush against an old, faded red car and come away with a red streak on your shirt. The wing tips and the front of the horizontal tail surfaces are shiny where the mechanics would have been pushing. the wings are shiny on the inside and below the gun bay doors, areas where the mechanics, fuel handlers and armorers would be. Keep up the fine work, Garry c
  10. Here is a smooth wing with some rivets showing. Crew Chief Of An Unidentified P-51D Mustang Assigned To The 45th FS 15th Fighter Group. The Army Air Corps Museum web page states that the 15th FG received P-51s in late 1944 and moved to Iwo Jima in Feb. 1945. They conducted long range escort and fighter sweeps over Japan. Loving your work, Garry c
  11. IN the photo on post #340,the left tyre looks to be block tread, the right tyre looks to be diamond. At least that's what I think I see. Garry c
  12. I am starting on the Airfix P-51. My plan is to fill the wing panel lines with AK white putty. This putty shrinks when it dries leaving a hint of a panel line. " Normally this shrinkage is a problem." he says as he fills a seam for the third time. "In this case it's not a bug, it's a feature" as the Sales Department says. Watching with interest, Garry c
  13. Just discovered this marvelous build ! Post #279, photo #5, patch on rear canopy where antenna cable was removed. Awesome work Garry c
  14. Nick Milman's article on Aotake is an excellent resource. http://www.aviationofjapan.com/2010/02/aotake-part-one.html Blue? Green? both are correct. Garry c
  15. An Irishman died and met St. Peter at the gates of Heaven. St Peter said; " We have a special test for Irishmen. First, you will be hung upside down in this barrel. Next, every drink you ever spilled will be poured in. If you drown, To Hell with you!" Garry c
  16. For the U.S.market, Toyota used to make a large van with a small engine called the: S Cargo. Garry c
  17. This is from a Packard Merlin gallery on flicker by KW kid. I do not know where the fuel comes from but the mechanical fuel pump is on the lower left rear. The primer is probably on an electric pump to prime before start. Garry c
  18. In the photo above, the frame seems to be spray painted while the landing gear is sloppily brush painted, also the tyres have bald spots. Perhaps the paint on the landing gear is not paint but a coating like cosomline to be removed later. Just a thought Garry c
  19. Exhaust pipes on either side of the intake pipe heating the air up, then the turbo followed by 2 large intercoolers cooling the compressed air down. Garry c
  20. In the book Gloster Gladiator in action from squadron/signal publications, it states that the first 38 production Sea Gladiators were converted Mk IIs. This first batch did not have catapult points nor the dinghy pack, the teardrop shaped faring beneath the fuselage. A second and final order for 60 more aircraft were produced, these had the catapult points(spools?) and the dinghy pack. The prototype was a Mk I (K6129), this book has no mention of any changes between the prototype hook and the production hook. Other changes for the Sea Gladiator; Airspeed Indicator in Knots instead of miles, naval TR.9 radio, and a revised 3 bladed Fariey-Reed propeller optimized for takeoff. Hope this helps, Garry c
  21. Thank You BS_w, that is exactly what I was wondering about, I was aware of the wearing plates in nmf, but with cockpit shadows it is impossible to tell if the floor is a darker shade. You are a gentleman and a scholar, Garry c
  22. This is the only photo I have found of the painted uninstalled wing. It appears to have some sort of cloth draped over the center section. It looks like the center section is Dark Olive Drab, not Yellow Green I take it all back, after blowing up this photo it appears there is no cloth over the center section which is most likely Yellow Green. Thanks for your kind indulgence, Garry c
  23. For a very nice photo of the canopy escape door, try Aircraft Pictorial #5 P-40 Warhawk by Dana Bell, page 34, titled: FAILURE OF CANOPY ON P-40 AIRPLANE. Slightly off topic, I was wondering something. The cockpit floor is the top surface of the wing On the export model, the famous LIFE photos show the center of the wing(the cockpit floor) painted interior colour while the rest of the wing is bare metal, before the aircraft was assembled.. The US Army P-40 B was painted before assembly. My question, was the floor of the cockpit the same colour as the rest of the wing, or was it masked off and painted Yellow Green? Is there a photo of the wing before assembly that can answer this question? Garry c
  24. Possibly a trick of the light Nick, note the apparent pale colour of the trim tab as well, the "tip" of the fin is the rudder horn. The finish known as Special Night had adhesion problems, perhaps the tip pf the rudder, the leading edge of the tail, the gear door, the area between and behind the the letter E are all paint issues ? Just a guess, Garry c
