  1. No, I did not wash them, did not use primer, and there is too much detail on the parts for a sanding. Looks like I handed myself a melon....
  2. I painted some Admiralty Model Works USN 5''/38 (1/700) turrets in Deck Blue, masked with Kabuki tape, sprayed Ocean Grey, masked, and sprayed Haze Grey. Unmasking tore off the paint (mostly the Deck Blue) in flakes. How to repair the mess, and how to make sure the paint will survive the unmasking next time around? TIA, Richard P.S.: The project is a Revell USS Flint built as CL52 USS Juneau, so the masking is - for me - quite taxing. And yes, the paint stuck perfectly to all the plastic parts.
  3. Probably old news, but this site WW2cruisers, has a few photos of K-class cruisers https://www.world-war.co.uk/germany/konigsberg.php
  4. Marine Arsenal No 13, "Die K-Kreuzer (II)", by Siegfried Breyer, p. 9; text to a photo dated 1937/38: "An dem aus genopptem Stahlblech beschaffenem Deck ist erkennbar, dass es sich um die Königsberg handelt, denn die beiden Schwesterschiffe hatten normale Holzdecks erhalten." my rough translation: " the steel-deck proves this is Königsberg, as the two sisters had received wooden decks"
  5. Marine Arsenal Band 12, "Admiral Scheer" by Siegfried Breyer has a list of changes DURING and AFTER reconstruction. During: a) new foundations for main engines b) new bow forward of frame 112 c) replacement of pagoda structure by pole mast d) extension of funnel-platform and installation of flat funnel cap, keeping the "Schorntseinteller" e) new mainmast f) increase capacity for spare torpedoes to 4 g) new bakery h) FuMo-26 on Vormars i) MES-Anlage (Magnetischer Eigen-Schutz) After: a) from 1941, a second FuMO-26 on the aft 10.5m range finder b) 1942: funnel cap was raised as in sister Lützow, replacing the "Schornsteinteller"; at the same time, funnel platforms were reduced to 2 (from 3) c) 1942: delete the front Vormarsplattform d) up to 1943 there were 2 FuMo-26 antennas on the forward rangefinder, from 1943 on only one. There is a side-view for 1940, and a sideview plus deck plan for 1944, the deck plan includes the increased AA outfit planned for 1945. Hth, Richard
  6. GRM, thank you so much for taking the time to reply to my request! Much appreciated, Richard
  7. My father was evacuated out of Pitomnik on 14 December, at approximately 13:00 double German daylight saving time, so presumably late afternoon, just before the airfield was closed due to icing conditions. The plane was a Ju52, of a group of about 3-4 planes. Do you have any information about which unit these planes belonged to, or what their markings were?
  8. Correction of typo in Dov's posting above: marking for Aufkl.Gr.12 is H1; 1H is KG 26
  9. Rob de Bie's site on the Me163 may have the information you are looking for https://robdebie.home.xs4all.nl
  10. "Afridi to Nizam, British Fleet Destroyers 1937 -43" by John English has a half page on Loyal's career, 2 of the photos shown above plus one showing her "mined... at Malta 10.5.45"
  11. Rich75: I certainly do not mind!
  12. It's Starling Models' 1/700 HMS Lagan, which looks like an excellent kit, with - to me - breathtaking detail. Is it necessary to wash and or to prime the parts before assembly and painting? The hull is almost translucent: does this call for a base coat to obtain good covering by the camouflage colors? (Sovereign Hobbies colorcoats) Any other pitfalls to watch out for? Yes, I do wear a mask when sanding, TIA, Richard
  13. IIUC, Trumpeter instructions for their 1/700 kit do call for Dull Black, Haze Gray and Light Gray; shipmodels.info does call for Dull Black, Ocean Gray, Light Gray. Which one is correct, or is it s/t else entirely?
  14. As in Prince of Wales in December 1941, Sheffield Sept. 1941, USS Alabama in Dec. 1942, Richelieu in Sept. 1943 etc. Did the camouflage design serve as a general idea only and the painters freehanded it, trying to get close to the design, or was the design transferred "perfectly" to the ship? If the latter, how?
  15. Way back when, before A9 Tauernautobahn was built, the Tauernschleuse was a much used loophole for crossing the Alps. Nowadays it's still well used (trains run every hour both ways) by both locals and tourists.
  16. There is a train shuttle for cars (piggy-back?) between Bad Gastein and Mallnitz, so a little over an hour transfer time, train ride included.
  17. Bad Gastein, not so far from Millstadt.
  18. Starling Models HMS Lagan, ordered (or shipped?) Feb.22 arrived today. Extra cost: 13.95 shipping, 12,21 Austrian customs duties. Bl...y Brexit!
  19. 1) HMS Penelope, in pristine Mountbatten pink on her way to join Force K at Malta. Adapted from a Flyhawk 1/700 kit for HMS Aurora. What a great kit! 2 + 3) HMS Offa & HMS Petard, Tamiya O-Class destroyers 1/700. These two hold second place* for time spent on my shelf of doom. Print outs of an article by Nigel Denchfield on HMS Penn are dated 2002, so I have been tinkering with them for over 20 years. Not-so-great kits, to put it politely. Petard got spruced up with an upper bridge and a searchlight platform left over from a Flyhawk destroyer (so much nicer than the Maya pyramid of the kit). Offa got a lattice mask of un-remembered origin. Dickrd and Jamie/Sovereign Hobbies helped with painting instructions. 4) IJN Kirishima, Hasegawa 1/700. Bit my rear end repeatedly for not having bought the Fujimi kit. In the works: He219 A-0, markings for the plane Major Streib crashed; Tamiya 1/48, using Gaspatch FuG 202 and a Squadron vac-formed canopy. HMS Warspite, Trumpeter 1/700. Masking the camouflage pattern was surprisingly straight forward. * record holders are 2 Dragon Me262Bs started in the mid-90ies when they came out and completed during the first Covid lockdown.
  20. Chris Goss "Dornier Do217, A Combat and Photographic Record..." p. 121f: "Just one aircraft was reported lost during the attack when Lt. Rohr of 4./KG 100 was shot down ..."
  21. Michal, thank you so much for your detailed reply, and the link to your build of HMS Jed! Richard
  22. Planning to build a Starling Models River class ship in 1/700, I am wondering which River Class frigate contributed the most to Allied victory in WWII? What was her fit (mining gear or not) and camouflage?
