Looks great - and so close!. You have to make sure that you finish this time
-
I realised that I've been lazy in sharing my builds on Britmodeller, so thought I'd add my next one to the forums. Then I stumble in here and discover this group build, which fits perfectly a kit I have in mind to finish. The kit is a Monogram 1:48 Black Widow. The kit itself was purchased in the 80s and I started work on it some 20 years back, only to give up on it and consign the box to my stash. I've pulled it out quite a few times but never really got the urge until now to have a go at it. What greeted me in the box was a somewhat assembled fuselage, an interior coated with lashings of zinc chromate and the usual horrible glossy monogram decals. First task will be to dis-assemble most of the parts and start over with the interior paint job, and proceed from there. If I can finally finish this one I'll be a happy man. Wish me luck!

I know it won't happen, but they could always do a 1/48 Matilda to match the Stuka as a "dogfight double" and cash in on the current 1/48 armour craze.
-
I'd take the popular versions for now. The aftermarket can always take care of the esoteric variants. Though I'm sure, given current practice, Airfix would release them in different boxings, as with the Beaufighter, He-111, Martlett/Wildcat etc.
-
As a few others have said - why not a Mosquito in 1/72? Seems like an obvious pick - plenty of versions and colour schemes to future-proof the investment, popular, well-known subject, could do a lovely dog-fight double Fix the fiddly landing gear and too-thick canopy of the old version, add some cockpit detail plus bomb-bay, cannon or camera interior detail for those respective versions in it....would have to be a winner surely.
-
With the Dornier 17z, HE-111 and Ju-88 all the subject of modern kits in 1/72, my hope is that Airfix will see the obvious gap in the market and give us a new-tool version of this beauty... Which then allows for the use of common parts to give us this....

That is....stunning. Cant wait for the finish.

Good to see some progress on this one. Although my "Beau" contribution for this GB is in 1/72, I also have the Tamiya 48th scale Mk.VI in the stash so I'm looking forward to seeing how this turns out.

It's been a little while, but work continues. However - I've decided on a change of colour scheme, after coming across a fascinating story concerning Beaufighters used by, of all places, Israel. The short version is thus:- Fake films and "stolen" aircraft - I couldn't resist. Thus, I've decided to save the SEAC version for another day and build an Israeli AF Mk.X instead. Meanwhile, the kit itself has been going together quite well. Unlike the Blenheim, the engine nacelles fitted quite well. A little sanding was all that was really needed. Next, I masked up the canopies before gluing them to the fuselage, and prepared for painting Undercoat was put on tonight, once it dries the painting can begin.
-
Update: This kit has threatened to let me down several times, but in the end things just seem to work out. Not sure why this is the case, but unlike the Airfix Blenheim, this kit has gone together (mostly) smoothly. Firstly, when assembling the fuselage halves, I thought they were warped. I just couldn't push the two halves together with any force without the nose being out of alignment or the tail section springing open. This was actually due to the fact that the floor assembly is added later, and acts as a brace across the bottom. Without it, the fuselage halves are quite soft and flimsy - potentially a trap for new builders. Once the floor was in place though, the set was aligned and quite secure. That done, the kit was taking shape. Next, the wings. Again, I was concerned that the wing spars would end up pushing the wings themselves out of alignment. They did on one side, but sanding the top of the spars on that side fixed the issue and the wing root mated up pretty well. Some sanding across the top of the wing root at the junction prior to glue made things better again, to the point that a little putty will finish the job later. Overall, it wasn't too much fuss. Next comes the engines and nacelles - I'll include them in a later post soon.

Airfix 1/72 Blenheim Mk.1 57 Sqn. Fffffffffffffffinally!
Scott_ replied to Blastvader's topic in Made in Britain Group Build
I found the control surfaces to be OK, though I did need to sand the edges to make them fit snugly. My main issue was with the fit of the cockpit onto the main fuselage - which in my case I traced to a bulkhead getting in the way, so took to it with a steel file and sanded a few mm off it - then it was OK. Would I build one again - definitely. It wasn't a Tamiya kit, but I still enjoyed it overall, and I have a Mk.IV in the stash waiting to go. I guess part of me is just really happy that Airfix is putting out nice kits of stuff I like Anyway - I grabbed a few pics of my kit - hope it helps you. -

Looks like you used a similar method to me when I built this kit - hope it worked out well. -

Love it. I've built the Mk.I, but not the Mk.IV - it awaits me in the stash. Curious to know if the cockpit fit will be better than the Mk.I was -

So, I finished off the 1/700 Prince of Wales, and thought that the new Airfix Beaufighter would make a good subject. But first, a short story... Last year, my local IPMS chapter decided to run group builds on their Facebook page, in addition to the themes and group builds run within the club. Our first was a P-47 GB - as per the Britmodeller one being run this year. So far, nothing much to see here, but... Our first meeting for this year had a "Best of British' theme. Adding to that, two of our three IPMS yearly GBs have British subjects - the Airifx new release Beaufighter and the Takom Chieftain. So of course, I come over here and....hmmm It gets better. Helicopter GB scheduled for mid-Feb? - my clubs version started in Jan. "Red Storm Rising"? not far from our Russian Jets GB that ran from October last year. So - should I worry about the Britmodeller spy in my club, or just pass them this year's calendar to make it easier for them Anyway - enough Tinfoil. Given the Beau will satisfy two group builds, it made an obvious choice. Plus I love Beaufighters - I have this, plus a Matchbox TF.X, a 1/72 Hasegawa RAAF kit and the Tamiya 1/48 Mk.VI. So far I've kicked off with some interior green for the first asemblies. Our club group build specifies that it must be OOB apart from decals, so that's what it will be. Hopefully this fuselage will fit together a little better than the new Blenheim did...

Well, HMS Prince of Wales has been launched onto the high seas of my local IPMS chapter! Etched railing were a bit of a challenge (not super happy with the result, but then again, I've never used it before, so it's OK I guess), and I think my washes have a little too much armour influence, but anyway here she is. Overall, I really enjoyed my first ship kit for 20+ years, and I've already got another lined up for the coming months. Photos below:-- 18 replies

Further progress - as I remember that it has been truly a long time since I touched a ship kit. Though the early build was easy (no interiors to paint or detail) I started to realise I had no idea of the "order' to finish off once the main assembly was done - a problem I don't have with aircraft and tanks. Do I go the gray first then try to paint the deck, do I put railing on so I can use a common colour with the superstructure or will that make masking too hard???? In the end, I decided to leave all the major gun turrets loose for now so they can be removed whenever I need to, paint the deck first, then mask it off and spray the superstructure. Then I'd highlight details, then give everything a wash and weathering. Railings would go on last of all, I'd paint them while still attached to the metal "sprue". I also cut the guns for the 'A' turret in "half" so I could position them at different angles. I prefer that look over having all the guns line up perfectly. So far it's working, though there's a few small touch-ups that need doing. We'll see. An amusing aside - the Gunze primer I used to undercoat the rails almost exactly matches the battleship gray used on the kit. so if I wanted to be reallllly lazy...- 18 replies

1/72 - Junkers Ju-87B-1/B-2 & R-2 Stuka by Airfix - released
Scott_ replied to Homebee's topic in The Rumourmonger
Now the only problem is - do I buy the 1/72 version to satisfy my immediate desire for a new Airfix Stuka, or do I wait for their more detailed 1/48 version? -
If Airfix were to re-tool more of their old kits, what should they be?
Scott_ replied to Scott_'s topic in The Rumourmonger
True. I wanted the emphasis to be on new tool issues of the current catalogue, rather than a free-for-all "I wish Airfix would make x". Mind you, that can be fun as well... -
Brush finished? - wow. Looks amazing so far. I've only built the Tiger I in Tamiya's 1/48 range but if it was any indication this series of kits are lovely.
