Agree - it seems like a good idea. People in love with older releases get what they want, Airfix gets $$$, novices have less chance of getting "tricked" by old moulds. Here's hoping the range does well and prompts some more releases - I agree a BN Islander, Beaver and Skyvan for aircraft, Iron Duke and King George V for ships

Back when Airfix released the new tool Me262 they just happened to mention that the 262/Mosquito dogfight double was their top selling doubles kit. Well, they have the new 262 now, so a new tool Mossie is starting to make good sense. Plus having made their way through Spitfires, Hurricanes, Hunters, Lancasters and Harriers - it's probably the most famous British aircraft that they have yet to retool in recent memory.

If Airfix were to re-tool more of their old kits, what should they be?

IMO a Sunderland with a full interior, some better engineering and finer exterior detail than the Italeri offering and maybe even a masking set for the windows could be a real flagship kit for Airfix. And I agree with a 1/24th Spitfire - either a new tool of something like a Mk.VIII or Mk.IX (not really on topic) or a retool of the Mk.1 which I would imagine would be a perpetual cash cow. -

Keeping it to sensible suggestions that should make Airfix plenty of money:- My number one choice - crying out for a re-tool would have to be the Mosquito. And having seen the amazing shots of the upcoming Wellington, just think of what Airfix could do to the Sunderland Next, given that the B-17 seems to be making decent sales given the release of the Fortress III, surely a B-24 would make sense, especially given the RAF and Coastal Command options available. Finally, something to add to their 1950s collection -
Some of those little Heller kits are lovely. Nice work.

That might have worked for me too, at least until someone upped the minimum amount for free shipping to Australia to 250 pounds!. Now I can put together a regular order to get over that, but to get enough on pre-order I'd need (for example) 13 Sea Fury kits!
-
Yep - another new release that seems to have gone out of stock almost the day it shows up. It still shows as available but with zero quantity so you can't add it to your cart. For those of us not in the UK who can't buy pre-order due to postage costs, it's getting pretty old when the same stock issues happen again and again :/

Airfix 2018 range announcement due 10.00 09/01/2018
Scott_ replied to Stephen's topic in The Rumourmonger
For a positive spin on things, look at it this way. The number of "new releases" which are decal options just goes to show that Airfix has some winners in the range that are making them good money. The Mustang briefly sold out from the store this year, as did the 262, and the Walrus is still out of stock, so there's obviously a strong demand for all three. Hence this year we get a new Walrus scheme, two new Mustang decal options and a 2-seat 262. The DC-3 looks to have been a quiet achiever, so we're now getting version 3 out of that mould. The Blenheim range in 72 must be doing great things too - we now have 4 versions and enough interest for Airfix to have a go in 1/48. All this hopefully keeps people buying whilst not demanding too much capital in terms of new moulds and research, meaning Airfix gets some cash together to finally release the Mosquito in 1/72 for 2019 as they rightfully should -
1/48 Spitfire Mk.XIV (duh!) 1/48 Hawker Hunter F.9 1/48 Blenheim Mk.IV (Hopefully the Free french version!) 1/48 Sea Fury - decal version for Iraq, Egypt, Pakistan 1/72 DH Mosquito Mk.II/VI/XVIII 1/72 B-17F - Memphis Belle / Coastal Command. My guess is that this was the "larger than a He-111" aircraft Airfix were rumoured to be measuring up at the Museum of Flight 1/72 B-25J / Mitchell III 1/72 Wellington - Coastal command 1/72 AC-47D Spooky - yes!. Good call VMA131Marine

Airfix 2018 range announcement due 10.00 09/01/2018

Based on the regular Airfix "top 5", the VW Camper seems to be doing very well for them. -
Airfix 2018 range announcement due 10.00 09/01/2018
Scott_ replied to Stephen's topic in The Rumourmonger
Realistically, I'm thinking we'll get:- A 1/72 Mosquito, given that it's a gap in their "classic RAF stuff" and it would fit nicely with the 262 as a dogfight double (something Airfix hinted at ages ago) Decal option on the 1/48 Mustang - RAF + ??? Something fleet air arm in /148 - Martlet, Hellcat or Firefly 1/72 Canberra / B57 - would seem to fill the cold war era nicely (we already have the Swift, Lightning, Sabre, Shackleton, Victor....) 1/72 Camel or SE.5a for the 100th anniversary of the RAF (and will go in some box set with other RAF types) Plus the 1/48 Blemheim and 1/72 Wellington that we already know about. Can't say much for 2019 except that there's no way Airfix will pass up how strongly the Walrus has sold (now sold out twice on the website) and we'll get a decal option - perhaps for natural metal examples) -
When the 262 was announced Airfix mentioned in one of their publicity blurbs that the old Me262 + Mosquito dogfight double was one of their most popular. Given that we now have the 262, I'm predicting a 1/72 Mosquito to replace the current outdated item, with a reborn 262/Mossie dogfight double to follow later on
-
Now it's been a few years since the Typhoon, maybe for their big Telford announcement they'll take another punt in 1/24 and do a Spitfire VIII or IX. No competition and it would surely sell at least as well as the Typhoon if done to that standard.

New 1/48th Scale Blenheim Announced by Airfix!!
Scott_ replied to tonyot's topic in The Rumourmonger
I've already built one of the Airfix Mk.1s. As for the censored price - it was actually someone else who did that, then sold it to me for $20 - bargain! Current plan is to keep the Mk.V as it's the only game in town. I was planning on selling the MPM Mk.IV, because who needs 3 Blenheims of the same mark. Then of course Airfix goes and announces this Mk.IV in a scheme I've loved since I was a kid and oh well dammit Airfix I guess I can cope with 3... -
New 1/48th Scale Blenheim Announced by Airfix!!
Scott_ replied to tonyot's topic in The Rumourmonger
Oh sure Airfix - go and release a beautiful Blenheim in 48th. Nice job. Now what do I do??? -
I'll add my 2c for a Mosquito - in both 72 and 48 so they can spread their development costs across two scales and fill both gaps in their catalogue. Plus a year or so back Airfix mentioned that the 262/Mossie dogfight double was one of their most popular, so with the 262 out this year they can fill that market as well. I suspect they'd go for the NF II/ FB VI/XVIII as per the original. As for others, the Pacific war seems to be doing well for them - perhaps a Hellcat in 72 (gives both USN and RN choices) or a Dauntless Wildcard - 1/24 Spitfire Mk.IX for the RAF 100th Anniversary next year
-
I think a Firefly in 72 would work just as well - they could go down the Defiant route and offer both scales I've heard before that Airfix isn't keen on multiple variants, but then they gave us the Martlet, Fortress III, 2 x He-111s, late version Beaufighter, etc. Each might constitute a fairly small change and minor parts differences, but it's still a variant. I can't see why Airfix would be opposed to another, especially as they could include RAF versions as a Mustang III Agree with you on the Sabre variant - love Sabres and have built two Airfix kits already. Any excuse to get another. Also agree on the 1/48 vehicles. There's a significant and growing market with both Tamiya and Hobby Boss doing great work in 48th. Rather than persist with odd scales like 76, I don't see why Airfix couldn't join them. I'd opt for 48 versions of the Churchill, Centurion and Chieftain for starters
-
Always love to see an Airfix release, but given we're supposed to be realistic... In 24th Spitfire Mk.1 - release a new tool version for the BoB 80th anniversary in two years time In 48th Bristol Bulldog (Airfix would have the market pretty much all to itself with this one) DH Mosquito Fairey Firefly Hawker Fury (as with the Bulldog, no real competition) P-51B Mustang In 72nd Avro Anson BAC Strikemaster Canberra B2 DH Mosquito Ju-88 (BoB version, perhaps others later) Mig-23 P-38 Lightning P-51B Mustang Short Sunderland Westland Lysander

Lovely. Especially given the age and era of the original kit (having built it myself some years back). Well done!

Nice. I've always loved the Jaguar. Build the Hasegawa kit ages ago and have another in the stash waiting for me.

I might just try that - I have a Tamiya P-cutter already (in fact I used it on this kit to scribe the panel lines). If I can get that done I should be back on track.

OK, back onto this after a bit of an absence. Assembly had been going well when I struck a problem - one of the elevator halves is quite warped. I tried assembling it hoping that the two booms would pull it back into line but it didn't work that way and the bend was still fairly obvious. So I decided to split the fuselage halves apart again, take the warped piece out and think about what could be done. At this point I'm thinking about scoring the plastic almost through on the inside with a razor saw and then using super-glue to reshape it (if that makes sense). Once the offending part is straightened up, the rest of the assembly should be fuss-free. If anyone has any other ideas, let me know

OK - so work has been a little slower than planned, but still moving forward. First step was to try and pull the fuselage apart so the cockpit could be repainted. Luckily, 20+ year old glue is pretty brittle, so it came apart OK. I even managed to get the seats out without breaking anything. Then the interior along with the undercarriage bays, got a coat of cockpit green over the lurid zinc chromate, followed by some detail painting and weathering. Gear doors went on as well to dry before putting the landing gear in. Panel lines on the wing were scribed and the horrible gap on the trailing edge which would be exposed with flaps down was filled with putty. More soon.
