  1. Great subject matter - lovely model - You have got great effect there for a mono-chrome scheme, really impressive
  2. Feck that, I have a load on the bench already and enough IAC Silver / Dayglo on display for now I am not even sure if I have the decals, too many WHIFF's
  3. Lovely job, nice story to boot - looking forward to someone doing IAC -
  4. I did a WHIFF based on the MB 339 FREMS kit based on the Irish Aircorps purchasing the RNZAF MB339's Used Vallejo paints Model Air 71.018 Black Green Model Air 71.020 Green Brown Panzer Aces 348 Splinter Green The choices were based on the official RNZAF FS numbers A lad in NZ is building one using the following: Scale Modellers Supply Premium Paints PL159 RAAF dark green PL77 Forest Green PL 187 Dunkelgrau RLM 74 I considered it, but it was too expensive or hard to find, Mister Kit 4801 1/48 MB-339CD conversion kit. Apologies if this is Grandmother and eggs country. In terms of FS numbers they were the closest - and I have access to the RNZAF paint notes and scheme if you want them. You can judge for yourself below at britmodeller or IPMS Ireland https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/ipms_ireland_forum/viewtopic.php?p=43455#p43455 Posted the kits back to myself from US - and they never made it
  5. I would love to see these done in a standard injection plastic kit, not stuff like vacuform or resin, some mid-range transport / MPA / AEW type 1/48 aircraft: 1/48 C-27J Spartan - (As a stablemate in 1/48 to the Italeri C-130, I think the Alenia C-27J Spartan would be a great addition to the range) 1/48 CASA CN-235 1/48 P3 Orion 1/48 Bombardier Global 6000/6500 and, being Irish: 1/48 TR.9 or T Mk IX Spitfire, I cannot ever find the unicorn Brigade Models conversion - considering Eduard do so many versions I am amazed they have not done the two seater. a decent 1/48 PC 9 and PC 12 On the Maritime front, a 1/350 Colossus - Majestic type has always seemed to me to be missing, the type in variations served with UK, Australia, Canada, Argentina, Netherlands, India, France and Brazil - so a base hull design with after market flight decks, aircraft etc I think would be really a potential best seller. The Heller 1/400 Arromanches does not 'fit in' with other scale ships
  6. Great work - love the chipping in particular, very subtle and it just looks right - nice one
  7. Thanks Adopho - I think I may do a Galland as a sort of penance
  8. Thanks for the feedback DNL and Bertie. It was the first time I used Yahu - very impressive. I may have made a mistake in the history, it may have been a later P40 E that was ferried from Accra, Ghana, to China - but happy with the outcome anyway
  9. Cheers for the feedback Remus, sorry about the picture quality. I made it because every collection I think should have a Flying Tiger, they have to be one of the most distinctive looking squadrons in history. The original "Flying Tigers" insignia of the AVG was designed in early 1942 by Walt Disney Studios. A Bengal tiger with wings is shown soaring out of a V for victory 'Although the Flying Tigers made famous the sharkmouth nose-art design, the RAF had been the first to popularize it during World War II. The RAF 112 fighter group was referred to as the “shark” squadron because its planes sported the sharkmouth design.12 It is interesting to note that the RAF had taken the sharkmouth design from the Germans who during World War II were the first to adopt the sharkmouth design on their Bf 110s of II/ZG 76. Years earlier, in World War I, the German Roland C.II Walfisch had a whalemouth design similar to the sharkmouth design. Other than in a few air shows where individuals painted their own planes, the sharkmouth design remained unused until World War II when Germany brought it back.13 As it turned out, the Bf 110s with their sharkmouth adornments were not especially good planes, and the RAF took the German design and used it against them.' 10. 1/48 Airfix Curtiss P-40B Warhawk (A05130) Presented as Curtiss Hawk 81-A2 flown by Robert T Smith of Nebraska (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_T._Smith), Kunming, June 1942 Nice kit – purchased at Marks Models Cork. Easy enough build. Only problem with the kit really is the prop assembly fit a bit crappy, and the decals were very poor in many respects. The Curtiss Hawk 81-A2 was the export version of the P-40B. The first aircraft received by the A.V.G. were Hawk 81-A2 fighters originally intended for the RAF, and as such they were painted according to RAF guidelines. As the cammo pattern shows on the top wing, the original roundels were painted over – some aircraft even displayed both for some time on the upper wing. They were delivered to the AVG after a ferry voyage of epic proportions from West Africa, via the middle east and India to the legendary Flying Tigers - the American Volunteer Group (AVG) in China While Curtiss did not have actual RAF paint stocks on hand, they used DuPont paints that approximated the colour descriptions given to them by the RAF As I found the kit supplied decals to be quite incorrect, the roundels are incorrect, i.e. the are 1 point short – so I went with an aftermarket set from kits-world. In addition to being of far better detail and being accurate, they also were of far better quality. In addition to being quite incorrect, the Airfix supplied decals I found to be of very poor quality, with stencilling decals falling off while drying despite the careful use use of microsol and microset – In short, if doing this kit out of box, I would strongly recommend investing in aftermarket decals, the ones supplied are, frankly, doo-doo. The supplied decals are incorrect, with 11 rather than 12 points on the roundel and are of poor quality PAINT – Primer AK 177 surface primer white – I was ot best pleased with it, lifted very easily, this may have been me not allowing it to dry long enough, but it was a serious issue for me. 11. Just the paints I had at hand, COVID has limited the budget fairly severely I found the PE stencils to be fairly easy to use. When I get back on my feet however, a vinyl printer is certainly on the cards
  12. Primer AK 178 Black For the base I used mostly Heilblau RLM 78 from Mig Ammo - Grey was IJN Grey from Tamiya 75 with a drop of Tamiya XF 2 flat white (about 10:1) I would go lighter if I could do it Greens were Mig Ammo RLM 81 and RLM 82 Cammo Green, again, next time I will look at something of a lighter shade - Still getting used to model shade Prop Vallejo Black Green 71.018 Cockpit was Tamiya XF-65 field grey used as a sub for RLM 02 - also used in the wheel wells Blacks XF-85 tyre black Gloss Coat - first sealing Pledge 'Revive it' Floor Gloss Satin coat /Sealing coat Galeria Satin Varnish (Acrylic)
  13. 1/48 Bf 109-E3 Subject Stab III / JG I France, June 1941 Pilot Grupen Adjudant Maj. Reinhard Heydrich (yes, that SOB) Balkankruz and chevron done by airbrush with Microdesign Photoetch stencil from https://www.ebay.ie/str/miracleworldofhobby This was a new departure for me in airbrushing markings as opposed to using decals, It does require some practice. Next time I think I will lay down white, spray in the black and then mask off the markings. I think in my case, the jury is still out on airbrush vs decals, but with a bit of practice it worked out OK and was not overly hard. Kit Eduard Weekend addition 84157 After market decals (Techmod) via trinitymews https://www.ebay.co.uk/str/accurahobbykits. Techmod Decals 48013E With regards the subject, I got a bit of flack on facebook. One person went so far as to say that Heydrich was not part of the 'clean' Luftwaffe I built the model out of historical interest, and perhaps a morbid sense of historical content - he was a reserve Major in the Luftwaffe - flew in the Poland campaign as a turret gunner - flew then in Norway campaign, then in France and against the RAF in a Bf 109. Flew finally in combat in the USSR. I first became aware of it after reading 'Hitler's Hangman: The Life of Heydrich' by Robert Gerwarth. Peer reviewed from University press if memory serves me correctly Incidentally he would fly to his families holiday home and arrived at the Wansee conference in a plane he piloted himself in 1942. I did not post it to engage in a historical debate, I did out of an interest in the hobby and a matter of historical fact. If the model was a WHIFF I would have stated so. And if you use Deluxe Plastic magic cement be careful with oil washes, hit the gloss coat with turpentine before doing a pin wash, and had to re-glue a lot of parts - at least that was my experience.
  14. Wonderful work and an interesting subject matter
  15. I think it might be the age, but some plastic very very brittle - Ejection seat was after market - forget which one it was The tail pitot broke very quickly, so maybe I am a bit ham fisted
  16. Airfix 1/48 Etendard IVP: Slight damage to the wing. Tail pitot tube replaced with syringe. Horrible kit in terms of fit and very brittle plastic - A few years old at this stage.
