  1. Peter Hall at Atlantic Models has VERY recently released three versions of the Whitbys and Rothesays in 1/350.
  2. Not all of BA's 757 had the short bypass duct (on the RB211-535C). They also operasted some 757s with the -535E4 engine which had the longer bypass duct.
  3. I built one of these many years ago and, if I remember correctly, it had incredibly heavy plastic railings which, thankfully, you have left off! Or is my memory completely wonky?!!
  4. She was scrapped in the Gareloch near Faslane in 1960. I can just remember seeing her (as a very young lad!) being towed through Rhu Narrows into the Gareloch.

  7. It's not a pitot tube - it is a HF radio antenna. HF radio was not required for purely domestic operations as all communication was/is by VHF. As United at the time was a purely domestic airline their 720s did not need HF radio so did not need the antenna.
  8. Are you sure the J did not have the swing tail? It definitely had the bulged fairings where the hinges were on the -D4.
  9. Neither of the two shuttle carriers operated by NASA came from Pan Am. The first one (NASA 905) was ex American Airlines and the second (NASA 911) was ex Japan Air Lines.
  10. The Amodel fuselage length is closest to the short fuselage Comet 4, the 4B (as used by Olympic) and the 4C both had the same lengthened fuselage as depicted by the fuselage in the Airfix kit.
  11. The company was not called just VEB - and they were produced in East Germany, not Soviet Germany (or to be pedantic the German Democratic Republic). All East German company names began with VEB ( Volkseigener Betrieb ) which means Publicly Owned Corporation. "Accurate in Outline"?!! Certainly does not describe any of the ones I had - DC-8, Comet, Trident. Only vaguely resembled the real thing ie the Trident had 3 engines!
  12. The longer more pointed nose shape is on Viscounts fitted with weather radar. If you search online (particularly for BEA/BA aircraft) you can find images of the same aircraft with both rounded and pointed radomes.

"photos of her arriving back at Scapa from the battle of the North Cape on 1st Jan 1944 seem to show a darker tone upperworks suggesting that she may have been in one overall colour when sinking the Scharnhorst:" My impression of these images is that the upperworks are still lighter than the hull colour - the first photo was probably taken on a very dull day.
  14. According to Malcolm Wright's book at the time of North Cape the hull was painted 507a/G10 with the superstructure in MS2. Wooden decks were painted grey (possibly 507b) but the foredeck was a lighter shade of grey. Sorry to confuse the issue!
