    This is absolutely gorgeous! What a stunning build, those engine nacelles are beautifully reproduced. Love the overall finish, the AA window decals are fantastic, and leading edges just superb.

     

    I flew on this jet to Miami in 1985 as a 10 year old kid, my first long haul trip and my first flight on a 747. Sadly as someone else pointed out this jet was the one destroyed at Kuwait during the Gulf conflict. Interestingly the wing gear from the aircraft was recovered and both sets are in BA's Waterside HQ at Heathrow spaced the correct distance apart to give visitors the idea of the size of the aircraft.

    I had a text whilst at work the other day from my lovely wife saying "Theres another big package just arrived here for you" (Note the use of the word 'another'!!). So on getting home I scuttled upstairs with said package and checked the contents, finding a Hobby Boss 1/48 F-14B as expected. Later in the evening whilst at the bench my wife came in and saw the not exactly small box and the conversation kinda went like this:-

     

    Mrs Eng - "Was that what was in your parcel?",

     

    (well you can't disguise that size of box)

     

    Me - "Yes"

     

    (The next question is always my favourite)

     

    Mrs Eng - "So...how many of those do you have already?"  

     

    (Now feeling a bit brave.....)

     

    Me - "Ah, just the one more!....Oh, and a Hobby Boss 'A' version, this Tamiya 'A' (points to last weeks arrival), and another Tamiya 'D' like that (points to completed VF-31 Tamiya D on the shelf)"

     

    (Now expecting a s**t storm to erupt I quickly continued....)

     

    Me - "...The thing is I've a build plan for all of these, and they are all slightly different. You see the aircraft evolved from the 'A' model with TF-30 engines and the smaller chin pod, this one (Tamiya A) will be a late model 'A', the 'A+' or 'B' featured more powerful and reliable F110 engines.... blah, blah, blah"

     

    (I turn to continue my explanation....  Mrs Eng now vacating the room...)

     

    Mrs S - "Whatever..."

     

    Lived to spend another day at the bench! 💪😉

    Thank you very much indeed for producing these decals in 1/72 scale, they are absolutely beautiful and performed flawlessly. I'm really pleased with how this turned out and am glad to finally have a Lakenheath Eagle in my collection.

    Thanks Mike, I never had any issue with the front canopy other than needing a tiny swipe of filler to blend in the join. I have got another one of these and two Strike Eagles so will be interesting to see if there's any issue with any of these.

    How do you rate the kit, is it a big improvement on the Hasegawa offering.

    I've never built the Hasegawa kit but I did have one in the stash for a while. I'd say the GWH kit is far more refined, and fits together with minimal effort and only a smear of filler. The panel lines and detail of the GWH kit is exactly what you'd expect of a modern kit from the Far East, sharp and crisp. I'd build this kit over and over again, its beautifully engineered for a 1/72 offering.

    1/72 GWH F-15C - Lakenheath Reaper

    Evening all, 

     

    After having made few visits to RAF Lakenheath over the past couple of years it was inevitable that I'd end up feeling the need to add a couple of Eagle's to the collection!

     

    Only things still to add are a couple of AMRAAM's, and I realised I've missed the nav lights, anyway here's my first effort at an Eagle -

     

    Kit: 1/72 Great Wall Hobby F-15C MSIP II  

    Decals: Kit decals and Caracal Models CD72074 - F-15C/D Lakenheath Eagles

    Paint: Tamiya, Vallejo and Vallejo metallic's

    Weathering: Windsor and Newton oil's, Daler-Rowney pastels

    Extra's: Tamiya tape seat belts

     

    I chose this option from the Caracal decal sheet as I caught a couple of photo's this very jet departing Lakenheath last August (see last 2 pics!). The jet still sports 2 kill markings below the cockpit for a pair of Su-25's downed on 6th January 1991.

    BA maintenance facilities

    The biggest aircraft the BA hangar at Glasgow could take was the 757. Nowadays the A321 is the biggest it takes, one of the two bays takes the A319/320/321, the other can only accommodate the A319/320. 

     

    We have had a 767 nosed in once for a windshield change.

     

    The hangars at Gatwick can take a 777, not sure if they can accommodate a 747.

     

    Cardiff opened in 1993 in June.

     

    Heathrow definitely had hangar capacity for aircraft up to 747 size back in 1988.

    Grounded aircraft

    I believe Gatwick and Heathrow have waived parking charges during the current crisis.

     

    Glasgow has currently got a Virgin 747-400 (G- VXLG Ruby Tuesday), six BA A321's (G-EUXC, G, H, K, L, M) and an A320 (G-MIDT which is in early for a hangar maintenance input), and then there's 3 impounded FlyBe Q400's. And it looks like there's another 4 BA aircraft due in tomorrow.

    Airfix Buccaneer S.2C - New tool

    Thank you all very much indeed for the kind comments and remarks. For anyone that didn't pick up on my rookie error, I mistakenly placed both sets of underwing serials with the same orientation, where they should be placed in such a way that one side can be read from the rear and the other read from the front. I will get this wrong again I know I will!!

     

    All the little tips given above will be noted as there will be plenty more Bucc's to come when the RAF ones hit the shops.

    Airfix Buccaneer S.2C - New tool

    Evening all,

     

    A recently completed new tool Airfix Buccaneer S.2 finished as XV357 612/LM of 803 NAS at Royal Navy RAF Lossiemouth circa 1971. The build is pretty much out the box other than the Xtradecal markings, some Tamiya tape seat belts and two 1000lb'ers from a RAF Phantom kit. 

     

    Absolutely loved this kit, some great features, one being those beautiful inlets and fans, the airbrake deserves the time taken to drill out the recesses, the gear bay is a tremendous bit of engineering and the wing folds are lovely. I had never intended to build one of these, I'd planned to wait for the RAF version, but every build review and article I saw just made it too tempting in the end..... and its so good I've ended up with another one, and I'll still be purchasing a few of the RAF examples when it shows up 😉

     

    Painted with Gunze Aqueous Hobby Colour Extra Dark Sea grey and a Satin coat from a Humbrol rattle can. Kept the weathering to a bare minimum as pics appear to indicate these were well looked after being carrier borne aircraft.

     

    Hope you like the pic's, feel free to pick holes in it, and there is a glaring error that I still cant believe I managed... but I did and a bit too late to rectify!

    All your Bucc questions

    in Aircraft Cold War

    Afternoon all,

     

    Anyone else had a Bucc with mould issues or "short shot"? Had this one arrive earlier and its missing a large chunk of the lower RH intake area right back to the double tabs for the location of the compressor face part.

     

    Have emailed Airfix Customer Service with some pics and requested a new part so will see what happens.

    All your Bucc questions

    First of all thank you to everyone throwing there Bucc knowledge into this superb pot of info, awesome stuff.

     

    Quick new question that I cant see having been asked already, but please ignore this if it has.

     

    On Xtradecal sheet X72307 theres a lovely Navy Bucc XT277 from the 60's in an experimental "Squirrel Grey" scheme. Does anyone know what this roughly equates to in modern parlance or  have any specific info on the colour used? Initially I thought it looks very similar to med sea grey but comparing it to the example on sheet X72308 its darker, possibly closer to the modern camo grey. Any thoughts?
