The E wing and C wings were essentially the same. Only differences were absence of underwing spent cartridge ports on outer machine gun bay panels, moving the cannon to the outer position of the cannon bay and the provision of a .50 cal Browning and ammunition/feed in the inner cannon bay position. The changes to turn a C wing into an E wing were available as a field modification on Spitfires, so it wasn't that difficult. I would imagine a small sprue with the necessary items would be enough, so I can't see Airfix not doing an E wing in the future.

A taller intercooler on the Packard engine meant a bulged top cowl was necessary (there were some rearranged accessories on the engine as well). To standardise production, later mk IX's had the same cowl even though they didn't need it.

Wouldn't a better solution be to ditch a debatable scheme that only actually appeared on one airframe for a very limited time (and which was then painted over) and opt for a scheme more representative of the Anson in WW2 RAAF service?
-
I hadn't considered that, I assumed they would do it like the 1/48 kits with separate parts for that area.
-
Unlike the old tool which had the cowling rails as part of the fuselage everything forward of the firewall appears to be separate, so a Merlin 45 plus all the bits and wing under surfaces with all the ancillaries and you have a Mk Vc. Similarly, they could go the whole hog and do a Mk I, the old kit is well overdue for replacement. Upscaling the 1/48 Groundcrew set would be nice.

I dithered between a IX and then a V, but I thought a new tool Spitfire was a shoe-in. Looking at the test shots on the Airfix site, the way it's been done different engine fits should be easily done, so I reckon they can get earlier, or even later (XII) marks from the basic kit without too much effort.
-
I'm thinking a 1/24 Vc. Given how the Spitfire itself was developed, if done properly with the sprues properly organised, a I, II or IX should easily be possible from a basic V kit, perhaps even a XII.

Think a Texan II would be more likely now that the Toucano has been retired by the RAF, and lots of markings options for the Texan.

Two in Argentina and one in Australia, although the Australian one is in storage and probably not "scan-able". Airfix is based here, and they've scanned at Cosford before.

I assume parts 27 and 28 are the longer stroke main landing gear fitted to the FB5 and onwards.

Eduard Chipmunk T.10 Detail Upgrades (for Airfix) 1:48
john224 replied to Mike's topic in Aftermarket (updates/conversions)
I definitely remember the harnesses being a dark lavender blue when I was a cadet in the early to mid 70's. -
My guess on that is that the Corgi model will come ready rigged. I think it's the rigging that puts a lot of "casual" modellers off early aircraft, I know it does me.

1/72 De Havilland Mosquito by Airfix - released
john224 replied to Bjorn's topic in The Rumourmonger
The hatch is there, right where it is on the instructions. It's just been done so finely, the opposite of Airfix's historic tramlines, that it can only just be seen in good light, and can be felt by running your fingertips over it. It will disappear completely under a coat of paint. -

That was my first impression on opening the box, it might be right but it looks small. What doesn't help is the obviously under scale pilot. (And why no navigator?) -

Back seat maybe, but never the pilot! No bone dome either. -

Can't do that in this case because you have to remove plastic to use the wheels up option. Sorry, should have been more clear. -

Mine arrived a few minutes ago. Provides masks for painting the undersides before adding the undercarriage, not seen that before. Might be just me, but the pilot looks a bit "undernourished", and no navigator provided, which is odd. Overall, pretty impressed. -

Ordered one (and a Chippy) on Thursday, they gave delivery as within 6 days. -
Mainly fabric covered ailerons on the Mk II and metal covered on the Mk V (from mid 1941 anyway). Apart from that I think the wings were essentially the same until the Vc appeared.

1/72 Hawker Tempest Mk. V by Airfix - release Autumn 2021
john224 replied to Bjorn's topic in The Rumourmonger
Apparently the production Mk V's were fitted with either a De Havilland or Rotol propeller, and the spinners were different. -
Just received mine, checked it very carefully, given the issues some people have found. Everything seems to be there, in good order, and it looks completely marvellous!

Tried to order 2 earlier, would let me add to the basket, proceed to checkout and confirm shipping details, but when it came to finalising the order couldn't do it. Seems there's something wrong with the web-site again, other people have reported the same issue.
