Someday these excellent models could be displayed in a space museum, so people can see the evolution of the French space programme. I imagine no similar comprehensive collection of French launchers has been attempted before by anyone.

Most probably, as I offered my designs to l'Arsenal and they should be made available soon in this corrected, improved, 3D printed version. Last Winter I assembled a partial 1:100 version for a South-East France association, to be displayed in various expositions.

Here are the 1:100 scale models :

  4. I'm about to conclude a 40 rocket project I started by 1982 about the French National Space Launcher Programme, that is, every French rocket produced or projected from 1950 until the termination of national programme in favour of Ariane.

Summary of the project so far:
The original project, in the form of a tecgnical survey for the Journal of The British Interplanetary Society, dates back to 1982. As soon as it was published in '87 I said to myself that I should make models of it... one day.

    The original article:

    nzOrRb-Programme-francais-01.jpg

The problem was: what scratching technique? In those distant days I barely knew PE and my resin moulds were not up to scratch.
In 2010 I discovered 3D drawing and started to design these rockets in 3D:

First the three groups of real launchers:

    18012111470023134915488819.jpg

    18012111470823134915488821.jpg

    18021712240923134915563048.jpg

Then the four groups of follow-on projected launchers:

    h5OrRb-144-Super-Diamant-Family-02.jpg

    18021410494123134915556807.jpg

    18030410492923134915593666.jpg

    l9OrRb-144-Super-Launchers.jpg

Some detail shots of the drawings:

    18030410492823134915593664.jpg

    18030309000723134915591593.jpg

    18030308595823134915591587.jpg

    18022308584123134915576262.jpg

Two years later (2012) I tried 3D printing (from a specialist... expensive... not great resolution).
In 2017 I bought my first 3D printer and set about producing masters of these machines for reproduction by resin casting. Accuracy was good but the finished product (moulded) still left something to be desired.

    My first custom printings (2017):

    18030506493323134915597051.jpg

In 2022 I bought my third printer and this time I discovered excellent accuracy (19 microns) and a printing cost so affordable it became possible to produce direct prints. Gone was the expensive and time-consuming moulding phase.

The new printing precision has made it possible to completely rework the designs for a fourth drawing version with even greater accuracy and precision. In fact, between 2017 and 2023 I went from a resolution of 84 microns to 19 microns, and I had to take advantage of this in further detailling the project by replacing all the designed PE parts with 3D..

So the final assembly of these forty rockets is finally started, 41 years after the original idea.

We start by printing the latest version:

    74FWPb-144-FuseesFran-05.jpg

    NSLVPb-144-FuseesFran-06.jpg

The interstage trusses of the big LRBA projects of 1966-68 were reworked, refined and printed. The first versions were made entirely of PE, which made assembly extremely difficult, if not impossible. Well, OK, impossible!

    Printing continues:

I'm taking this opportunity to solve a support issue: the biggest launchers have multiple engines at the base and to make them more visible I've taken inspiration from a contemporary launch cradle for American Titan rockets to invent a support that goes well with it:

    rXMrRb-144-FuseesFran-21.jpg

    rXMrRb-144-FuseesFran-22.jpg

    rXMrRb-144-FuseesFran-23.jpg

    0XMrRb-144-FuseesFran-34.jpg

    1XMrRb-144-FuseesFran-35.jpg

Start of assembly (in real chronological order) :

    vXMrRb-144-FuseesFran-26.jpg

    wXMrRb-144-FuseesFran-27.jpg

The interlocking studs on the different stages are not long enough (2mm), even though they also act as locators for the relative orientation of the two elements. I'm still managing, but precise alignment on the axis is a bit tricky. This will give rise to a fifth version of the drawings with tenons 3 times longer, which will be used for future prints. This proves the old adage: always make a prototype assembly before moving on to the final assembly.

    yXMrRb-144-FuseesFran-29.jpg

    yXMrRb-144-FuseesFran-30.jpg

    zXMrRb-144-FuseesFran-32.jpg

    0XMrRb-144-FuseesFran-33.jpg

The first part is finished, including all the launchers that actually existed, from Veronique to Diamant BP4. The painting phase begins with an AK black primer coat:

    1XMrRb-144-FuseesFran-36.jpg

I then moved on to the launcher projects of 1965-1968, which included many more parts.
First, the SEREB solid fuelled launchers: Régent, Diogène 2, Turquoise C and H.

    3XMrRb-144-FuseesFran-37.jpg

    5XMrRb-144-FuseesFran-38.jpg

Then the LRBA's liquid fuel launchers:

    Carmen :

    4XMrRb-144-FuseesFran-39.jpg

    Vulcain C, P and H :

    lXMrRb-144-FuseesFran-41.jpg

    lXMrRb-144-FuseesFran-43.jpg

    mXMrRb-144-FuseesFran-44.jpg

After assembly and priming, this second group joins the first for general painting.
After masking the parts that will remain metallic with Parafilm, four coats of Tamiya XF-2 matt white were applied. 4 hours of work and two large 23ml pots of paint, but the result is there:

    mXMrRb-144-FuseesFran-45.jpg

    nXMrRb-144-FuseesFran-46.jpg

    nXMrRb-144-FuseesFran-47.jpg

Close-up of the Hyper Diamant boosters. Note the nozzles, previously painted light brown and masked with Parafilm, which is also used to fix them on toothpicks. Each booster is 8mm long and its nozzle about 1.5mm:

    nXMrRb-144-FuseesFran-48.jpg

The other elements are painted with Alclad2 on a black base (Steel, Airframe aluminium, White aluminium, Magnesium).

    oXMrRb-144-FuseesFran-49.jpg

    oXMrRb-144-FuseesFran-50.jpg

    qXMrRb-144-FuseesFran-51.jpg

    rXMrRb-144-FuseesFran-52.jpg

Three more masking-painting operations for the other colours and we'll move on to the final assembly.

    To be continued...

More USN aircraft will follow, but we start a new series in parallel, aimed at French Air Force aircraft:

As announced earlier, you can order from our site but the products will be posted FREE after June 25th.
Today our site is still down because of a serious break by our provider, but we'll return largely in time for you to send your orders.

  11. Dear customers,

I'd like to thank you for your support, your compliments and your many orders over the last few months.

But I have to admit that we are victims of our own success.

Our production is behind schedule and our stocks are running low.

I'm therefore going to close L'Arsenal from today until June 25th. We're going to take advantage of this period to concentrate solely on our production.

That way, when we reopen on June 26th, stocks will be full again and orders will be filled.

To apologise for this inconvenience, I'm offering you free postage (without tracking or insurance) during this period, with delivery at the end of June.

The release of the latest new products in May is being maintained as the items have already been produced and are in stock, except for the Sagaie, Dagaie, 20mm f1 and 30mm Breda barrels, which have been postponed until the end of June.

So see you soon, and in the meantime, I'll be producing like crazy!

    Mélaine
