  1. Okay got time to get the final touches sorted! So I got the airbrush out and sprayed down a white base coat for my fluorescent blue IMG_20240207_195237629 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240207_195301576 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240207_195309592 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Aaand this is when it all started to go a bit wrong! The fluroescent blue is crazy thin and it really wasn't going well, it was pooling a bit but without really seeming like much colour was going down IMG_20240207_200954295 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240207_201027817 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I was pretty crestfallen about that to be honest, looking back now I'm kicking myself a bit as I just left my compressor on its default psi of 30 and really for closeup work with such thin paint it shout have been half that. I did brush on some more on and felt better as it was building up better, but it still didn't look right. But then I realised I'd broken a cardinal rule of OSL and lighting effects, light travels in straight lines and this is engine glow coming from inside NOT and external light so how in the hell would there be a glow around it? So I decided to paint around it with more orange and green to get rid of the glow haze and it was much better, so from there I put a little white down to create bright spots in the vent and brushed over a final coat of the fluorescent blue. IMG_20240208_193907134 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240208_194117906 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240208_195040648~2 by Nick Frost, on Flickr The rear jet went a little smoother as I didn't at least have to repaint anything, I just built up the blue with the brush to accentuate the light shining on the tyre, and then mixed in some white just to get a light blue for some edge highlighting. IMG_20240208_194906934 by Nick Frost, on Flickr So Cathy is now all done! Over the weekend I'll take some decent shots and get the RFI topic sorted, and my next miniature is currently working its way to me through the post so it wont be long till I start the next one. Cheers for the interest and kind comments, it is always greatly appreciated Thanks for looking, more soon
  2. Like the cradle, its looking good Pete, the swept back STAP handlebars really suit your design
  3. You've created a really lively scene! Very cool
  4. Very cool! I still play mechwarrior 3050 for the SNES. Like your camo, and the decal is a nice touch
  5. Just a quick little update, I painted the edge of the base with 2 coats of black to neaten it up and did a bit of edge highlighting on the gray panels at the sides. IMG_20240206_221425905 by Nick Frost, on Flickr So thats her 99% done, as I said in the last update only thing left to do it to do the glow effect. The way I'll be doing that is to spray some white around the side vents where I've already given them a base of white inside, and around the jet at the back. This is then sprayed with fluorescent blue before going back in with white to establish my bright points then its given a second coat of the blue. So that will all be in the next (and final) update. Thanks for looking, more soon
  6. Wow thanks Rob, really appreciate the kind words, that's good of you to say
  7. Cheers Pete! I just keep the coffee decaf and hold my breath for as long as I dare! Started the base last night, just used a big old brush to slap a load of dark grey on as a base, and then using the same brush I wet blended a slightly lighter shade of the same grey in to the front and fading it back. Then using the split crappy bristles to my advantage I brushed on a lighter grey, trying to get a bit an impression of motion with the lines (if nothing else I like the look!) IMG_20240205_193313536 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I started picking out details using some of the same colours I've used on the miniature to help tie it together IMG_20240205_195657199 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240205_200546855 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240205_202510920 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240205_204040286 by Nick Frost, on Flickr So thats the base almost complete, just want to tone down the yellow a bit so its darker then the yellow on the miniature and highlight the light grey bars, after that it will just be a matter of going around the edge in black. So next up I'll get that sorted and then its just a matter of the blue glow effects which means venturing once more in to the cold shed to do some airbrushing Thanks for looking, more soon
  8. Thanks John! Yeah I've only just learnt this dark art in the last few months myself!
  9. Okay finally got a chance to get my pics sorted and do an update, managed to get quite a bit done so there's a fair few pictures! I started by adding some shadows and highlights to the dust being kicked up by the back wheel and giving both wheels a drybrush with a dark gray with a little of the bone white to also give a dusty feel IMG_20240202_194342660 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240202_194356444 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240202_194906159 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240202_195025022 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then it was on to the trousers, I want these to be a light grey, so I used some stonewall grey from vallejo and just mixed some black in to get a mid tone and then built up a highlight of pure stonewall grey on the top of her right thigh and the bit of her left thigh that is in the direction of the light. This ended up being a bit of a wet blend only because of my own imatience with drying times! IMG_20240202_195635956 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240202_195659499 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240202_200648795 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240202_201124146 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240202_202110939 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240202_202124122 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240202_202533275 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240202_202544574 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240202_202555525 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Now at this point I was happy with the trousers but the more I looked at the bike the more I felt something was missing. Straightaway I realised I didnt like the red for the wires, I probably would have done blue for more contrast if not for the fact all my glow effects on the vents and jet are going to be blue (which is why I've been activley avoiding it for the whole colourscheme) So I hit on painting the wires bright moot green from citadel, and then I gave a lot more parts of the bike a hit of the green too and I think it looks a lot better. IMG_20240203_130416995 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Straight away there is a lot more visual interest for your eye to look at and it gives it a more cyber punk feel (plus it gives some Mazda 787b vibes which is never a bad thing!) IMG_20240203_130455074_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr I mixed in some flash gitz yellow to make a highlight colour and applied it in the same way I had when it was grey IMG_20240203_131738171 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then while I was adding detail I gave the dial a few coats of the fluorescent magenta, which was another way to break up the colour but also ties it in with the headset, perhaps implying that the controls/display are linked to its display IMG_20240203_132129963 by Nick Frost, on Flickr And for no other reason than giving another little detail to catch they eye, I put a dot of green on the headset side bits IMG_20240203_132141032 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I then got out my rhinox hide dark brown and laid down the base colour for all the leather bits IMG_20240203_133005581 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240203_133607841 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240203_193954747 by Nick Frost, on Flickr And while I was doing that I added yet more of the bright green, I decided to paint the edge of the wheel rim moot green too just to tie it all together a bit more. IMG_20240204_130733529_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I started the next step of highlighting the leather by doing a 50/50 mix of the rhinox hide base colour and doombull brown (which is a nice deep red brown) IMG_20240204_151957893 by Nick Frost, on Flickr At this point I thought I better paint the grenades before going any further as I probably should have done that before the leather anyway, so I mixed an olive green from moot green vallejo dark green and some orange and a bit of rhinox hide as a base colour. IMG_20240204_152448560 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240204_152458020 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240204_152927986 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I then added a little yellow to this mix for a highlight and added that only to the ones on her right hand side as the other side is the more shady side. IMG_20240204_152941313 by Nick Frost, on Flickr While I had the flash gitz yellow on my wet pallet I also got the stripes on her trousers painted IMG_20240204_153943961_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240204_153953173 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then just for a little detail, I put some yellow squiggles on the grenades to look like the yellow writing you sometimes get on the green ammo boxes and military equipment. IMG_20240204_154123562_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240204_154137423_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr Once that was sorted I moved back to the leather and used pure doombull brown to add the next stage of highlighting IMG_20240204_155037738 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240204_155051928 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240204_155118397 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240204_160217939 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I used some stonewall grey for all the little clips on the grenades, straps and centre pouch too IMG_20240204_160217939 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240204_160249091 by Nick Frost, on Flickr And finally I painted the ankle strap thing and the two armor plates on her boots painted with more mephiston red, which ties them in with the red of her gloves which I like. IMG_20240204_161157083 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240204_161211190 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240204_161235389 by Nick Frost, on Flickr So after all that, in terms of the actual figure Cathy is pretty much done, I did her laces black but I'm not sure how well that shows up so I may give them a bit of a highlight. I'm going to leave the glow effects for the end as I need the airbrush for that, so next up I'll start the base. Thanks for looking, more soon
  10. Thanks Hopsing! I've been painting a lot over the weekend so I'll have another update soon when I get a chance to upload my pics
  11. That's really cool! All your parts tie together very well, and I really like the blue with the yellow ID bands
  12. Very cool! Be careful where you put him on the shelf, you don't want to obstruct his view of Venus
  13. Oh man yeah that took a while to get my head around! I was always used to slapping on the humbrol enamel in one thick coat when I got a brush out, so I'm still having to make a conscious effort to thin the paint!
  14. Thank you, I do try to be thorough! Really appreciate the interest in my stuff
  15. Been working more on the bike, building up the colours and gradually going around adding highlights IMG_20240131_202902878 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240131_202923500 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I've added about 4 layers of the orange, and I've tried to keep the area which is in the most light (forward of her crotch) a lighter shade of orange, but again I keep adding to it to build it up. I'm pretty pleased as it looked a total mess when I first laid it down but thats one of the things I've had to work on with figure painting, patience and keeping in mind that several thin coats is way better than a blotchy thick one. IMG_20240131_203831385 by Nick Frost, on Flickr And I got the jet fuel (???) cap and instrument dial painted black as a base ready for highlighting in gray. IMG_20240131_204526342 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240201_191006780 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Got the rear wheel base painted with black too IMG_20240131_205141793 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Also just as a little bit of pop to catch the eye, I painted a small detail on the front and rear wheels with some mephiston red IMG_20240201_191023067 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240201_191030046 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240201_191034855 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I got the wire details painted with the red too, and I also got the white base paint down for the fluorescent blue engine glow for the side vents and rear jet, also throughout all of this I've been going back and building up and adding highlights with lighter shades of gray and orange here and there, keeping the left hand side of the bike darker as its the most in shadow. IMG_20240201_200722162 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240201_200733491 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240201_200741503 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Final things I did were to get the instrument dial painted white, and I gave the tyre smoke a mid tone coat of bone white (I'll highlight with pure white and add shadow with some brown added in so it has a dusty look and not yet more grey on this!) IMG_20240201_201316971 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240201_202121832 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240201_202132214 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240201_203835371 by Nick Frost, on Flickr So thats where she is now, next up I'll sort out the highlights and shadow on the tyre smoke, and after that I think I'll do her legs before sorting out the glow effects on the bike. Thanks for looking, more soon
  16. Oh sweet I'm in Pete, this sounds cracking! It already looks built for super speed
  17. Cheers Col.! Im sticking with matt for the bike, mostly because I'm painting with the light in mind so I'll be adding in and building up highlights and I think if I give it any kind of sheen it would screw with that look a bit to have actual light reflections
  18. Nice! Thats some very nice work with the patterns on the clothing, especially at 1/35 scale!
  19. Really excellent paint job! And thats a very nice collection of busts you've done, great use of the spare head!
