Definitely back on track Tom. I think I can imagine the size but she looks imposing!

Got the Shack in the garden today. She is complete (feels odd saying that!) so nice to see some light on her
Managed to scrap together a ladder and some chocks. Both need a coat of yellow paint but should do.
So should have all the bits soon to get some RFI pics done. Hope I can find a base big enough to sit her on!

Only just caught up with - looks rather good! I have the later Italeri boxing so will reread in detail when I get to it.

I realised I forgot the V shaped antenna under the nose, so I made one up and attached it. You can see the lower window wiper and cockpit wiper too
And the radio wires attached from the top of the fuselage to the tail
Boarding ladder & chocks next

Fiddly bits today. Glued the blades into the prop bosses. Then started on ariels, antennas and windscreen wipers.
All now in place. Still need radio wires to the tail uprights, boarding ladder and checks. But very nearly done
Might even be done by next weekend! Might build the Houchin too and pose the Shack with the Bison, Sherpa & ground power from the Houchin

Sticking things is fine, painting the yellow, or in this case red and white prop bits, nah!!!!
Big win for the U's today mate. Off to Notts County next week as it is only a few miles away.
Too right. Leaving it late in the season. One more win might be enough & we have some games in hand. Bit embarrassing to see Wrexham do the double over us this year, especially with our old manager!

Painting all those propellers, you've got far more patience than I McDuff. I hate doing them at the best of time. Other than that great work.
Painting might be the easy bit! Remember they are pitched in different directions and the front prop radius is different to the back…..

I got on with the second wheel assembly yesterday
They came together ok, here are the two sets test fitted in position
Got them glued in place, paint touched up and wheel bay doors on. I cut these out so long ago I was sure I would loose at least one of them!
And I touched up the paint on the prop blades and drilled out the back set of holes on the prop bosses. The rear set of blades should be slightly shorter than the front (thank you to who reminded me of that - forgotten who it was!) so I have drilled the rear location holes a little bit deeper so the blades will sit a little further in
On e the props are done I think that just leaves ariels and antenna, pitot tube and she might be done! Could do with some oversized wheel chocks and a rear door access ladder. Anything else I have missed?

Sneakily impressive bar side. This is one for my notes.
It’s more about looking at Lancaster kit parts and what materials I have to hand than being a truly accurate representation, but you will hardly know they are there by the end of the build.

Cheers. The colour does look right to me. Funnily enough when I touched up the wing details I just used the out of the bottle extra dark sea grey and I can’t really spot the difference! But it does look lighter overall and does seem to have that bluish hue about it

Back from holidays & missing the sunshine but started on to the main wheel support / retraction system. I started with the bits I was looking at before and sketched up a profile of the wheel well. I used one long top tube to start with. The white metal strut beneath and the tube have been attached to an end plate. I put two small plates on a short part of the tube to attach to the main legs.
However, test fits seemed a little hit and miss so I cut out the left hand end of the tube and slid in a thinner brass tube so the whole assembly can be slid in or out until it fits
So it will go something like this
I plan to thin the attachment point on the legs to make a nice snug fit. Some cross beam are no doubt needed too
In place something like this. As I say some cross braces, a couple of actuators for the doors and then the bay doors are the last part.
Two down, two to go

Your F-35 is looking great. I keep hoping that an RAF one will drop by when visit Lakenheath to watch the US ones

In other news, I attempted to apply some decals yesterday… their age has conspired against me and they have silvered terribly - even over the super smooth gloss and a bed of future. Not happy. They’ll have to come off and I’ll need to raid the spares stash - which won’t be easy for some of the Vulcan specific stencils. One step forward, two back…
That’s a shame. I am beginning to think that all older kit decals need to be colour copied before use so they can be reprinted in white or transparent base if things go wrong.- 1

Yes - being a private school I get closer to 4 weeks so plenty if bench time! I’ve actually got three builds in the queue and ready for paint so I’m making the most of time away from the classroom. Enjoy the sun - we could do with some of that here…
Little taste for you - first time in Sicily- 2

Looked very nice indeed Tom. Easy to mess up an area that size when spraying. I guess you are on week two of the Easter break? I didn’t start the two week until Easter so sneaked away for some sun so no modelling happening with me

What unit is your B-17 going to be built as belonging to? Just interested as I live surrounded by old Eight Air Force bases in East Anglia. I have to pass Rattlesden and Great Ashfield and almost get to Bury St Edmunds every day. The Bloody Hundredth museum up at Thorpe Abbotts isn’t that far away and the Hundredth still fly KC-135s from Mildenhall.

I was thinking about the undercarriage parts and I remembered that there were some white metal parts with the kit. There are two long parts that look like hydrolic rams, and 4 more shorter parts
So I think the longer aluminium rod will stay but the shorter length will get replaced by the white metal bits.
Got the rail / aerials attached to the bomb bay doors too. I need a few hours to get the undercarriage parts together, then I can get the doors on the wheel wells.
For some reason the rad dome looks a different colour in that shot! No idea why - it isn’t!

Thank @Lord Riot there was something from another era about seeing the old grey lady at 80s air shows. More in keeping with the BBMF than the rest of the aircraft on show

Had a look at the main undercarriage legs tonight. I have some nice aluminium tube that should nicely make up the main leg brace and retraction system. It’s a Y-shaped assembly with the single end on the leg and the twin end at the back of the wheel well. I got the hacksaw out and cut a couple of lengths to see how it will look
First length in to check length
And the second leg comes down from the wing and meets about half way up
The plan will be to wrap the mid way joint with a plasticard u-shaped ‘sleeve’ and add a couple of plates to join the rod to the leg. As far as I understand it the long length on the real thing is a hinged two part and the lower (in the above picture) is the hydrolic ram that pushes the main leg down or pulls it up. Get those down & tidy and just a couple of smaller rams for the bay doors and the wheels should be about done. However upcoming Easter, visiting family and a week away means this still won’t be finished for a while

Got the other side under wing serials on. The red lifted and cracked a bit going on, but has touched in nicely with a little red paint
Adding bits to the upper wings & ailerons. These will touch in ok I am sure
The ‘rails are to go on back of each of the bomb bay doors - are there antennas?
So that’s the bits I had a go at while intending to get on with the main undercarriage. Guess that will be another day then

Wow that's really nice in the natural light! Impressively "hefty" in its appearance and those double props look cool and dangerous askew like that.
Cheers - I was trying to think what to put in the picture for a sense of scale. Nearly put a tin of bean in the shot! I lined up the outer props but like the just off look for the inners. Almost like they are being turned over prior to start up.

Cheers - natural light always looks the best to me. It’s going to be a swine to fit it on a base and it will dwarf any background. I did start building a Type C hangar in 1/48 which might just fit as a backdrop

Finished off one of the under wings
And dry fitted the props. Then noticed the sunshine briefly in the garden so took her outside

Shack seems like a nice centrepiece though...
You would think so. But I don’t think that’s in the plans

Cheers guys. Can’t imagine what white for black swap on an inkjet would do to it & how you clean it out afterwards @AdrianMF!
I have today I could have done with a fresh exacto blade for the cutting out, but anything sharper probably would have slipped at some point and probably taken off a finger in the process.
I can actually see this getting finished at some point. Which would be nice as the itch to get on to something else is growing. And my wife would quite like the dining room table back before the family come over on Easter Sunday….

Right, steps and chocks painted and all the bits together. Now I am not sure this base will be big enough, and it will need to be outside, ideally get some sunshine & shadow. But something along these lines
Any other ideas welcome as to how to display the Shack
