  1. I like that a lot The weathering is brilliant, fantastic job.
  2. Absolutely stunning job :-) I've got one of those in my stash, still learning so it's staying there until I can make a decent attempt at it.
  3. It comes off quite easily rubbing it with some isopropyl alcohol, so not too big a problem. Yes, must be patient with buying the airbrush, really have to concentrate on getting the basics right.
  4. Thanks for that Troy, very usefull :-) I used the Tamiya rattle can primer, about the only thing that worked well ;-) I masked the edges along the wings and the body to get a sharp line between the top and bottom colours, that worked ok but then I decided to mask for the camouflage pattern on the top, which failed miserably, yes a stupid mistake. I thinned with the Tamiya thinner rather than water, probably another mistake. I'll work through those links, look very usefull thanks. I'm probably trying to run before I can walk, so that's why I was asking for paint recommendations that are a bit easier to use. I was aware that Tamiya acrylic is difficult to brush, just didn't expect it to be as hard as it is.
  5. Ok, thanks for replies, I'll pop down to the LMS on Saturday and see if they have the Humbrol paints. One last quick question, if I use enamel paint should I still use primer?
  6. I'm being very thick tonight, just replied to the email notification rather than posting the reply on here and wondered why my post hadn't appeared, someone shoot me now ;-) Anyway, yes I've tried thinning it and also tried retardant, I'm sure someone with more experience could get it to work, but as this is my first model for a far too many years I'm really after an easier option.
  7. Hi, Really peed off with this, I know Tamiya paints aren't so good brush painted, but as its my first model for years I got the Tamiya paints when buying the kit as I had no clue as to what would be better. Anyway, took the masking off this afternoon and the paint is a complete mess :-( I've started removing the paint and want to repaint using something that's going to work brushed on. So, could anyone recommend a brand of paint to use and the corrdect colours for the underside and the top camouflage please. The Mrs said she'll buy me an airbrush and compressor for my birthday, but that's not until May and I can't pursuade her to let me get one early ;-)
  8. Found this on fleabay for £10, couldn't resist ;-) I'm still trying to complete my first model, however I seem to have somehow acquired a bit of a stash now...
  9. After a 30 year break, decided to get back into scale modelling and after a discussion in another thread I plumped for the Tamiya 1/48 Spitfire Mk 1. Got the kit last week but have been waiting for a few bits and bobs to turn up and trying to figure out the instructions. One thing I noticed was that the paint list isn't complete, it uses Tamiya XF-57 on the pilot and this is missing from the list, guess I'll just have to have a stab at mixing some of the other colours to get as close as I can. Started this afternoon getting all the bits cleaned up for stage 1 which is the cockpit area. Spent a good few hours on this as I'm trying to get used to new tools and techniques, got everything cleaned up quite nicely and figured out how it all goes together. Tomorrow I'll start assembling, painting etc. Few numpty moments today: No pictures today as I'd set the camera up on the tripod and then sent it flying, it now has a nice rattling sound so I'll have to take it into the camera shop tomorrow. Started cleaning up the control stick, started sanding off what I thought was some sprue on the top of the control stick, then realised it wasn't sprue but part of the stick. Was fiddling with a mini clamp to see if how I'd use it to hold 2 bits together to glue, the clamp was stronger than the plastic which buckled and I then had to spend a bit of time coaxing the plastic back into the right shape. Forgot I was looking through the magnifying lamp whilst trying to blow some dust off the piece I was working on. Overall though, it was great to finally get going on this :-)
  10. Thanks, got to pick up a prescription tomorrow so I'll see if I can scrounge some. Pretty obvious solution really, having a bit of a brain fade tonight ;-)
  11. Hi, This is probably a stupid newbie question, but here goes :-) I've got my first kit, the Tamiya 1/48 Spitfire Mk 1 and the relevant Tamiya paints. In the instructions it has things like XF-1:1 + XF52:5 + XF64:5 which I presume means I need to mix the 3 paints in the ratio of 1:5:5. If that's correct, what's the easiest way to measure out very small quantities of paint to get them in the correct ratio? See, told you it was a stupid question ;-)
  12. Well, got the Tamiya 1/48 Mk 1 Spitfire kit today :-) Few bits a pieces turning up over the next couple of days, should be able to get cracking very soon, think I'll start a build thread so I can ask loads of really stupid questions in there as I progress with this.
  13. I've had a look for a club on the IPMS website and there is nothing local, nearest are Leeds and Wakefield, both a bit of a trek for me unfortunately. I'm probably going to pop along to the Huddersfield Model Show on the 15th Feb and have a chat to a few people to see if there is anything a bit closer, plus probably come home with a few bags of bits n pieces ;-)
  14. That looks fantastic Dave, if I can get anywhere near the quality of build you've achieved on my first attempt I'll be chuffed to bits, really nice job there :-)
