Very nicely done Matt! I like the approach to the painting after assembly, makes sense so long as you can detach sub assemblies i guess?

Here is the finished "UHU" Difficult Model to handle when finished, Antennas everywhere! Took a long time to build what looked to be an easy build, Camo scheme was relatively straight forward to complete. I've annoyingly not rotated the front wheel to the correct position for some of the photos, so i some you will see the sanded flat spot Trying to get this model to be nose heavy was quite a dilemma as you will see in the WIP forum.

1/35 Dragon "KingTiger" - Henschel (W/Zimmerit)
Silverstone 2 replied to Silverstone 2's topic in Work in Progress - Armour
Thanks Matt Did a lot of research in how to weather this KT, In the end I simply started experimenting. I'm very happy with the results of this AFV. The DML kit is very good but the Magic Tracks are a nightmare, though they do look very authentic. Looking forward to seeing both your 35th & 16th scale efforts. Phil -
Have made quite a lot progress with this Wulf already. Just a few picks for the moment, seat belts need to be added to the seat + more detail on the instrument panel first.

The finished article: - Needs more decal softening and detailing & the vision blocks need dulling down a little on the hull. -

UHU is together now, after lots of sanding and re-scribing of panel lines. The overall fit is very goos just a small amount of seem filling between the wings and horizontal stabilizer. Main undercarriage is on too. Lots of wights have been used all over the 219 in order to get the C of G forward, even used wights in the propeller hubs & Nose gear itself. Decided on the the A-7 Version NJG.1 with the Fug 220 Antennas as this seem to be the rarer build. On to the RLM 75/76 next:

Dragon 1/35 King Tiger - Battle of the Bulge

Hi Matt, Look Great! I've finished mine now, ill be posting pictures ASAP. Look forward to seeing how yours turns out? Just in the painting stage of my 1/32 He-219 & Fw-190, then I must start the Trumpeter KingTiger Phil -
Body halves now joined: Wings and engines too..... Strategically placed lots of ballast (invisibly) in the form of Butyl, which is great for density and ease of hand/finger molding. Even put ballast in the engine nacelles out of sight, in the outer cavity of the radiators in order to bring this "UHU's" C of G forward enough to not be a tail-dragger.

I know this Revell "UHU" has been done a number of times but here goes: Starting with the cockpit detail.....

Tracks are part finished, rust coat completed. Thinking of metallic high-lights to show bare metal parts. Tank mud-fenders are removable at present in order to fit the magic-tracks. -

Progress Update: Camo scheme is now complete, although needs fading a bit so thinking of a thinned tan coat to start, followed by dark washes. Any suggestions on fading/washes are welcome as this is my first AFV. -

Some more progress: Think the base coat (now mixed) looks more like the Tan/Sand colour i want to start with. Magic tracks are taking an age, almost there now. There will be un upper and lower half to both sides, seems the best way for easy access. -
The Kit shows the Leading edge seem line of the flaps, co-incident with the rear of the interior bomb racks. The plan drawing (above) simply shows the Flap seem to be aft of this area and not parallel like the Italeri kit. (pictures on pages 1,2 of this thread) In answer to me drawing the pencil line, I am not going to be purchasing this 1/72 Stirling form Italeri, because it falls short (no pun intended) of a modern advance on what is already available. Like I stated earlier the Airfix version is as good IMHO. This topic has come about due to my Uncle, who flew Stirlings in the war and I have made quite a few commission builds in this respect. Hope this helps?
-
I think that the Italeri Stirling model does not realistically represent a definitive Flap slot on the underside. I'm sure some careful scribing could do this justice. IMHO it's not a big deal, especially as most finished 1/72 Stirlings will be viewed from above. Maybe this is why the underside detail might have been overlooked? In Summary, considering the other issues I don't think Italeri have trumped the Airfix version. No tractor of bomb carriages for a start. But the clear plastic parts on the Italeri is a leap forward. I would really like to see a 1/48 scale version of the magnificent aircraft, like the Tamiya Lancaster or Trumpeter Wellington.

Please note the very large Flap seem line underneath the wing of the Box - Art!
-
Flap lines indeed! Research and comments beforehand should be researched Take a look at how big these single piece Fowler type flaps are: Some more examples: I think the problems on accuracy arise form the different material available for research. Some of the drawings do not show panel lines and indeed seem lines represented correctly. Being a Pilot and flying Aircraft for a living i can say with confidence that a large extending flap of this size will definitely have a very prominent seem under the wing as well as above. Unfortunately there are more historic photos of the Stirling from above than below. The fact that the Stirling is black underneath in most guises, doesn't help resolving clarity either. I hope the images help? Bottom line: the New Stirling's from Italeri are not the last word in accurate 1/72 Injection model kits, sure this can be addressed and that is half the fun.

Real shame about the accuracy of the rivets and the Panel lines, I was looking forward to a more up-to-date Stirling . Biggest concern I have, as someone has already stated. Trailing edge flaps - have a seem at the top of the wing but none at all at the bottom. Great subject the Stirling, I only wish the correct research would be completed first. IMHO the 42yr old Airfix is still a better kit if the right amount of time is spent. I completed a build on Airfix's 1/72 BU-N back in 2012 - WIP forum. Hard work but the results were worth it.

Looking very good Matt, I'm relatively new to AFV modelling as you know, my question is why are the turned aluminium barrels so much of a preference to the styrene ones which come with the model? Is it just the consistency and accuracy of the turned barrels, which obviously have no seems or any minor distortions? My 1/35 DML Tiger 2 has one and it does look nice but unfortunately the muzzle and muzzle brake where styrene halves with the muzzle ring disc.

My canopy arrived this morning too, so I removed it form the sprue & cleaned up. Now it's kept wrapped and safe in a protective box. Didn't want any cracks to have any chances to grow, whilst it hangs precariously on one sprue-attachment point, at a particularly sensitive part of the clear structure. Regarding the distortions: It might be possible to remove some of the distortion with careful application of polishing compound. I've often found distortion on clear plastic is due to uneven surfaces.

Hi Matt, See what you mean about blocking the view of the turret basket but am I right in saying only from one angle? (i.e. 4th picture - Outside view fro rear quarter) Other than that the ammo rack is looks fine. You could always leave the rack there and just remove the shells at your own discretion? Phil
