If with 50 from early 82 then ‘dingoes’ and a City of Lincoln badge on the fin. You have the luxury of choice it seems depending on just when you portray her.

There is a photo of her on the VRT site at Goose bay in 1982 with the dingoes just visible on the tail and she still looks 'fresh out the box' - I'm tempted to build her as 617sqn one side and 50sqn the other.

617 Sqn weren’t at Waddington in 1981 though, they were ‘up the road’ at Scampton.

Xl426's bio on the VRT website reads in such a way that you'd believe she was still with 617sqn but at Waddington after her last major in 1981. I guess you have to read it a certain way to read it right, but I certainly did think it was odd.

    I'll correct it anyway :)

  3. Hi Andy, looking forward to your build :)

I'm sure I can speak for both of us in saying please feel free to pop into mine or @Adam Poultney's threads if you need any help with the build or aircraft details. We're both building the box art aircraft but in different time periods and configurations.

Adam's will be especially useful as he's done the research for the version you are building.

@general melchett's test build of the kit is also well worth looking at despite him having built a different aircraft.

Wow I can't wait to get one of these! I made the old Airfix kit when I was a kid and this looks to be quite substantial in engineering and parts I saw on Flory Models on YouTube they're doing a build, and two on here, I can't wait to see these finished! How's the fit so far? I've the Hellcat and the kit looks awesome the new Airfix stuff seems to be top of the line from what I can see.

The fit is good so far - as above the tolerances on the nose section are tight and the locating stalks for the bang seats need trimming. Only real fit issue is the tab join for the fuselage sections which just needs fettling, but the wings themselves fit perfectly.

Deano, hope WV908 doesn't mind but here's a link to the pre-production test kit I built for Airfix, last March. Just to give you some idea of how it looks when finished.

I don't mind at all - I don't think anyone on here would mind you chipping in and linking your builds haha

Great start, loving the photos showing the general structure of the kit and how it builds up. 👍

Thanks :) I had the wacky idea of laying the bits out in a rough Vulcan-y shape and it worked quite nicely I think.

Slight problem with leaving the moulded wipers on, Airfix have put them on the wrong side of the glass panels, Andy @general melchett posted a photo on Adams "rivet counting thread" of the Newark Vulcan showing the correct position and the broken arm of the missing centre wiper.

Hi Bob, even if they were wrong, I'm not of the persuasion to remove them :)

On all-white Vulcans the forward 1/4 of the ECM plates were white the rest a dark aluminium colour. (I used AKs Xtreme Metal Dark Aluminium which matched photographs well).

    Thanks General, that's brilliant :)

    Another Vulcan build, Quelle Surprise!

Only joking, the more there are the more tips for me when I get to build one. I’ve gathered quite a few already including the one above from the General about all white Vulcan ECM plates.

    Watching closely.

    Hi John,

I'm very quickly learning what is worth fettling and what isn't haha. I spent ages prepping the bits for the 'core' of the jet and subsequently realised it would have gone together fine straight from the box :)

  6. I can't imagine what it would have been like to work on 'standard' nuclear ordnance, never mind those horrid things. The one I'll be fitting to XL317 will be an inert training round.

The kit is honestly fantastic. There are issues with the fuselage join along the top, but it's pretty much just mould seams that are the problem. A bit of material will need to be shaved off the tabs in the bomb bay roof but it's nothing serious.

Apart from this though, the fit is more than good enough so far. Just be aware of very tight tolerances with the nose and as Adam pointed out, the attachment tabs for the bang seats need cutting down.

  7. So I've made a final decision about the airframes I'm building - I had decided on XM648 for my wraparound Vulcan, but then I realised she is 301 powered. So!

    XM594 - Standard camo, 44sqn, Waddington 1981

    XL426 - Wraparound camo, 617sqn, Scampton 1981

    XL317 - Anti-Flash White, 617sqn, Scampton 1963

Anything I should be wary of with these choices @Adam Poultney?

  8. Thanks Adam - so yes although I have picked 1981 she will not be too far different from her appearance over the last decade or so - except with tags and green blowy-uppy things.

Don't worry about the ramble haha - I always find it amazing just how quickly the early Vulcans were disposed of.

You can rest your mind though with my builds as I have decided not to build XL444 - My wraparound Vulcan will likely be XM648 instead.

A cold, crisp February morning in 1983. The clear out at Waddington is in full swing. A lone Vulcan on dispersal awaits her last flight.

Her crew reviews the weather reports. A snow storm is moving in but they are confident they can make the short trip before it hits.

This particular Vulcan is XM594, the penultimate Blue Steel fitted airframe and one that is about to attempt the second most insane landing in V-bomber history - The top spot is taken by XA908 which performed a GRASS landing at RAF Newton on retirement. Anyway, 594 is the only Vulcan to have done a short field tarmac landing. In a snow storm. On an airfield that only ever usually saw gliders and single engine aircraft.

So, my first (eek!) build of the new Airfix kit will be XM594 towards the end of her service. I'm going to be requiring the assistance of @Adam Poultney on this one and why would I build her battered and worn? Well because when I build XM655 in the same colour scheme it's going to be all shiny.

For all your rivet counting needs please see Adam's thread, but for now here is my progress on '594

The cockpit is about 80% assembled with the seats dry fitted, the main structural core of the aircraft is complete, ordnance has been dry-fitted and the Blue Steel has been built up for a bit of fun.

I'm loving this kit so far and have another two on the way - at least one of which will be loaded up ready to head to the range.

Looks good, that's quite a decent clamp you've got, I either use the Mk1 hand clamp until the parts stay in place or a combination of bands, tape and pegs if it needs to be clamped for longer.

I was hoping that more WIPs would appear but it seems to be just us two sharing our builds for now 😕 Come on Britmodeller! Don't you all want to build some Vulcans?

    Give me chance :P

  11. Thanks Adam, got it now :)

XM603 will be as preserved (although I won't be plating over the control surfaces)

Thankyou for your help with the others - Trouble four or the Trembling ***** as she was well known is of much interest to me, as after a career of being a hated hangar queen she took part in that last public Vulcan scramble at Finningley in 81. I also love the dark on dark wraparound camo.

There used to be a great photoset of that last scramble online but I can't find it anymore.

The only thing stopping me doing 560 is that she has the same camo (topside) as XM594

     WV908

  12. @Adam Poultney You're more than welcome, and thankyou for the roundels in return! :)

I just need your address to post them to haha ;)

I think I've decided on my builds - XM594 in 44sqn camo, XM603 in Anti Flash White (no sqn) and then a wraparound Vulcan. 9sqn's XL444 is a front runner right now, buuut XL426 is equally a front runner.

I want to avoid the typical XH558 or Black buck build, but I would like to build 607 in desert wraparound or XH560 sans refuelling probe as dumped at Marham.

Is there anything I should watch out for with my choices?

    Cheers,

      WV908

Should only have the one, don't ever recall seeing any camouflaged Vulcan with Type D roundels with two, it would be very unusual and worth modelling if it did have two

That's my thinking haha - you mentioned earlier about swapping decals. Would you be happy to give up the correctly proportioned 1/72 Fundekals roundels?

I'd be more than happy to trade anything I have duplicated for them :)

    Cheers,
