  1. The problem is that even BR601 (as the 6th IX off the production line) was modified to the later standard, similar to how MH415 and MH434 are presented now. Unless anyone has modified their early IX back to original condition as BR601 has been, then there just won't be any.

The IX in this early configuration is the kit mentioned at the bottom of the previous page and *looks* to be right for BR601. I'm now scratching my head thinking if I caught her in the UK before she departed to the US, but I don't think I did, sadly.

  2. Unless Troy or anyone else has any other examples they know of then it looks like the only surviving early Mk.IX with the small chin intake and large cannon bulge *C* wing is BR601, a beautifully turned out warbird living in the US that has quite an incredible history.

Just for clarity, you want to do a survivor or warbird?

Again, if you can plan on doing a PR.XI, then how hard is to change a wing bulge.

RE PR.XI,  probably the best starting point is the Airfix XIX with a new nose, radiators and cut back fin, plus some cockpit modifications, as it's less work than doing the bowser wing and cameras.....

Hi Troy, preferably a warbird but I'd be happy with any survivor.

Yeah with the PR.XI, I have all the conversion bits to do one from a VIII or IX already, so since the VIII has the wing I need for the IX build, I could just swap the wings and file off and fill the bits I don't want.

I probably have other options looking at my spares, but it would be nice to know if any survivors still have them.

If your looking for 'C' wings, Eduard's recent release 84175 (Spitfire F Mk. IX 1/48) has the 'C' wing.

Yeah this is the boxing I've just bought 😊 I should have looked for one of the older boxings though.

  4. Back to the original header topic quickly - does anyone know if there are any surviving Mk.IX's with the original twin cannon bulge?

Stupidly I've just picked up the Eduard 1/48 Early IX without thinking which wings it had. If there are no suitable IX's then I guess I can just pick up another HF.VIII and modify the early IX wings to use on that as a PR.XI conversion.

Have you seen the photos of the parts on LSP? Beautiful!

Yeah the photos were the final push to make me order it. I'm always wary about 3d printed parts but the detail is so fine and the surfaces so smooth that one rubbed back coat of primer is all that will be needed.

The extras like the towing bar and crew ladder piqued my interest and especially when you weigh up the cost vs the 1/48 Special Hobby offering it seems fairly reasonable.

After missing out on the first run I did end up buying three of the special hobby kits second hand for about £40 each (Two AJ's and an SK) and had decided to wait for Jetmads to do the SK and planned to pick that up... But I decided when this second run of JA's was announced that I couldn't resist the proper fighter Viggen with that huge belly cannon.

I want to do a bit of research on the kit to see what variants can be built from this, but I'd quite like to build a grey end-of life JA

Well that knocks my idea about order numbering being an indication of how many have sold into a cocked hat!!  But we have something to look forward to in the New Year!!

Someone over on LSP said the current order numbers include the Learjet (I think) pre-orders - so collectively between the two they appear to have half-sold each. Either that or the Viggen is nearly sold out again but I decided not to chance it. I did secure a pre-order for the first run but had to cancel as the payment just hit at a bad time. Well, this time I've already paid so it's only a matter of time :)

If you're producing something that's easily scalable - like decals or resin parts - you can throw it into the range straight away without necessarily producing it.

If some stuff comes on larger sheets, as with these DP Casper decals, it's simply a use of space. Maybe someone will make such a model, maybe not, it's not the decal manufacturer's problem.

I guess this is the reason why Almark included Victor markings on their 1/48 Gulf War sheet?

They never turned up and no response to my follow up PMs.

    Repaired the part myself.

Apologies for my absence everyone - been a very busy few weeks with no time for modelling at all (that and the Hobby room has been way too hot)

My parts from Jack turned up but equally have had no responses to PMs since.

    @DonH

I am pretty sure the RN FG.1 had them removed when they went to the RAF.

This is a fairly common topic over on the BPAG facebook group.

    To clarify;

All FG.1's had both the recess and hook and never lost them

All FGR.2's had it faired over.

Unfortunately I cannot recall the status of the F.3's off the top of my head, but most (all?) of them were Vietnam vets and would have had them originally.

  10. Has anyone else found that their cockpit sprues are so thick with mould release agent that they've had to scrub them?

I've never known it be this bad.

Weirdly, the 'dodgy' kit out of my three has problems all around. It has warped sprues, a few damaged parts and it looks like one of the sprues has been through a glitter factory.

To me it looks as if this first batch was rushed through two different factories as the differences between the kits are quite major.

What about XH558 in her original scheme? Only wide intake Vulcan B1 to wear the B1/early B2 scheme with full shade roundels and black serials on white

I am very tempted since it is a unique scheme, but I was thinking of building 558 during her MMR period or with OCU markings in white.

Definitely will not consider building 558 as a K2 as I'll be building XH560 at some point.
