While we're on the topic of Dutch meteors. I assume they had the same stencils as the RAF aircraft on the fuselage fuel tank?

I Iove the collective knowledge on this site. Thanks all for your help!

Hi, all. I was working on a 1/72 Airfix Meteor F8 in Belgian colours. Unfortunately the decals that came with that kit were abysmal (a bad batch, maybe) and I'm looking for a new colour scheme. I've picked up Xtradecal X72071 and am interested in Meteor I-189 of the Red Diamonds or Ruiten Vier. The instructions show the aircraft with a fuselage fuel tank; lucky as I had already added one to the aircraft. However, all the photos I've found of the aircraft during it's time in aerobatics shows the aircraft without the fuel tank. See here, and here. Two questions. Were these tanks fitted for longer flights? Could I assume the Ruiten Vier flew with fuselage tanks when not performing? Secondly, and unrelated to my previous questions, what is this I can see at the top of the red circle on the aircraft's nose? Source I've noticed it on photos of the aircraft in question, but it's not present on the kit.

Keen. Sign me up. I've got lots that would qualify. -
Thoroughly enjoyed this group build. Thanks to all the participants and to those who organised. Now that the group build is over are we alright to continue our works in progress here or should we switch to the main forum?

Tempting, Patrice. Btw, can we keep using these threads until we've finished or does this need to move to the WIP area? Decided to take another crack at the HSS. There are some fine scratch marks on the wing in the direction of the airflow. I'm happy with those, but I wasn't happy with the few running perpendicular. Both wings done, top and bottom. Harder to correct any issue with the underside due to the rocket stubs. But also harder for anyone to see the flaws! Canopy's finished. I've also built the little bar that runs from one side of the canopy to the other behind the pilot.
-
Wasn't able to get this one across the finishing line before the 15th, but we're nearly at the next stage of painting. I slipped and put a knife through my last vac-formed canopy. I ordered two more and I'm making good progress on this.
-
Slow progress, but I'm back onto it. I've been working on some P-51s and have been attempting to clear the shelf of doom (1/72 Airfix Meteor F8 and Xtrakit Supermarine Swift). The vac-formed canopy is a thousand timers clearer than the old Airfix canopy. My photos below don't do it any justice. The Lancaster I'm modelling has the larger dome at the rear of the canopy. I'm considering cutting the clear-vax canopy and splicing in the larger dome which is spare in my Hasegawa Lanc. For now I'll get back to preparing the fuselage to be closed.

Enjoying following your Mustang builds, Patrice. Very nice work. -
I did a much better job with the wing panel lines on this bird. Almost invisible on top.

I want to head to Karamea on the West Coast for the same reason. End of the road! Good starting point for explorations. So this is what Tamiya AS-12 looks like when you don't botch up the primer coat (no primer this time around). I'm less concerned about the contrast with the Airframe Aluminium now.

Thanks, Graham. Looks like Eduard are releasing an F Mk. IX and with the earlier wide canon bulges on the wings. https://www.eduard.com/store/aircraft-and-helicopters/1-72/spitfire-f-mk-ix-1-72-1.html?cur=2 I think the wide bulges might rule out the aircraft here, but open the door to represent EN520. -
Also, does anyone know what that is leaking out from that hole in the side of the lower engine cowling? Presumably oil? Above the wing, forward by 30cm or so. NZ2419 (further up the page) has the same stains on the fuselage. Both of these images show the leak from the starboard side. Is there something similar on the port side of the fuselage?
-
Comparing the spinner and the body of NZ2425 the spinner looks polished and the fuselage looks dull. Maybe if I was to give the fuselage a coat of clear for decals and finish it in a semi-gloss clear I might be able to create some contrast. Source.

Yep. Looking east from Fletcher's Bay. My first time in that part of the Coro. My Girlfriend's family had a tradition of visiting Port Jackson which we might pick up in years to come. Anyone here have any experience with polishing canopies? I attempted to remove some scratch marks from a canopy with some toothpaste and I've created some new ones. It's minor and I'll forge ahead, but might give it a dip in some clear.

Thought I'd dig up this thread rather than start my own. Haven't been able to find out what carburetor intake this spitfire flew with. Hoping to be able to make this aircraft with the Eduard 1/72 kit. Any Spitfire gurus able to help? -
I'm having holiday withdrawals. My Mustangs are keeping me sane. First aircraft completed and can be seen in the gallery. Pretty happy with how this turned out. As you can see I decided to go with the uncuffed propeller. I've seen images of NZ2413 with both types of prop and decided I preferred the look of the uncuffed blades. I should have some HSS on NZ2425 by Sunday evening. Taking my compressor to the GF's parents' place to keep the lacquer fumes out of the apartment!

Back to it! Mustang no. 2 has its wings on and is getting ready for its HSS wings and moving surfaces. Mustang no. 1 is getting dangerously close. Might be finished tomorrow. Question for the alcladders out there, which bottle to use for the NM mustang? The spinner is looking pretty good on NZ2413, but I think it might create too much of a contrast against the HSS if I was to finish the fuselage in it. There doesn't appear to be much of a contrast here on NZ2423. Source. Maybe a Alclad Aluminium. However, look at this picture of NZ2419 and compare the rudder to the fuselage. Source. Maybe an Alclad Airframe Aluminium as I used on the spinner of the aircraft above.

Last update before I go away. Aerials on. Had to make my own main aerial as the kit one was unusable. Decals on the prop! Haven't been able to get to the kit today. It'll have to wait until I come back from the Coromandel on the 4th-ish. Happy new year everyone!
-
She's on her legs now. Only the prop and spinner left to go. Oh, and the main aerial. Keep forgetting about that.
-
Because I'm indecisive I've painted both the cuffed and un-cuffed blades in flat black. I also painted the spinner in Humbrol gloss black. Magical to see such a high shine straight from the bottle. After finishing with the decals I gave the aircraft a coat of Tamiya semi-gloss and gave the anti-glare panel a once over of flat black to tone it down. Very happy with the aircraft and looking forward to finishing this kit, hopefully before I go away in a few days.
-
Making good progress now. Brushed on a clear coat last night and now I'm almost finished with the decals. The blue isn't as bright as it appears here. That's the result of a cellphone camera and my lamp.
-
I ignored my own advice and added the bare metal panels for the squadron badge. Decided the other picture I found was too small to really tell. This Alclad is magical. Airframe Aluminium over Tamiya TS-12. I'm looking forward to using this on the fuselage of my other bird!

Cheers, Procopius. I see more Mustangs in my future, perhaps a Tamiya F-51. I picked up my first bottle for my second Airfix Mustang. Airframe aluminium for the fuselage.
