  1. Quoting myself. So, NZ2413 has an un-cuffed propeller in that photo. Same aircraft below, but with a cuffed propeller. No mark around the squadron badge. Perhaps it's actually exhaust stain? Anyway, I'm using the cuffed prop, so no need to represent it. Source
  2. Gloss coat Monday hopefully. Then we'll be onto the decals. When looking at some images of the TAF/RNZAF mustangs I noticed a paint variation on NZ2413 where the squadron badge sits. Source of the photo. Looking at Mumbes' Mustangs he's represented this as a bare metal finish. If it is natural metal it looks like a rough demarcation on the mustangs in the photo above. Might be a job for some dry brushing of some metallic paints. Edit: also, I've just noticed now that NZ2413 has some US stenciling on the flaps. Good to know for the next step!
  3. Tamiya gun metal for the panel around the exhausts. Lightly oversprayed with AS-12 as it was a bit stark. The brushed on Tamiya surface primer hasn't removed the panel lines from the wings, but has reduced them quite significantly. Apparently that's appropriate for this particular Mustang. I think I'll take a closer look at my other Mustang before I commit to painting. I think the wing panels could use some more work to fully remove the lines.
  4. Paint! First, a base coat of Mr Surfacer 1500. Followed by decanted Tamiya AS-12. Lovely paint to use, but I think I'll stick to spraying at my brother's place. It's a bit stinky at my apartment, even with the windows and doors open. Masked off the Mr Surfacer for the anti glare panel. Unfortunately the AS-12 looks a little rough. Looks like I didn't do a good enough job with the Mr Surfacer. The primer lifted in a few places under the wing and where I resprayed the AS-12 over bare plastic it looks a lot smoother. No worries though! Still looks good and I've learnt some lessons for the second kit.
  5. As we move further into the silly season I'm going to focus on getting this Mustang completed before all my time disappears. The natural metal mustang will be finished early in the new year.
  6. First canopy is on and I'm very happy with it. There's a bit of sanding to do to tidy up the edges, but it's looking pretty good.
  7. I'd call those results fantastic.
  8. Slow progress. I damaged both canopies cutting them away from the sprue. Not sure how other people managed to do this properly, but when I cut away the canopy it created marks which can't be polished out. No matter. I've been modifying vac formed canopies for the Hasegawa kit. LOTS of cutting required, but I think I'm there with one canopy.
  9. Keen. Let's see, in the stash we have Vampire FB.5 or T. 11, Sea Vixen FAW 1 or 2, or Mosquito FB Mk.VI/NF MK.II. I'd love a Gispy Moth, but I'm leaning towards an FB.5 for this build.
  10. Hobbies should be relaxing! Good call, Steve. Did you have some TAF or RNZAF Mustangs in mind?
  11. Wings are on the HSS Mustang. Hoping to have it ready for spraying tomorrow.
  12. Nope, but I think the time has come!
  13. I tried out the Mr Color Silver lacquer on a Hobby Boss Mig-15. Not good enough for a NMF finish, but I think I've found my high speed silver equivalent.
  14. Another Sea Vixen detailing question! Does anyone know if this Airwaves kit would fit the MPM/Xtrakit? https://www.hannants.co.uk/product/AEC72206
  15. I hadn't noticed that. Might hold off on the Special Hobby kit unless I can spot a C.19 wing to pair it with. Thanks all for the advice.
  16. Evening, all. Sorry if this has been discussed before. I'm trying to determine what the difference is between the two Special Hobby boxings of the Avro Anson in 1/72. There's an early and a late version. I see the early version doesn't have a turret on the art work, but I haven't seen any inbox reviews of the kit, only of the late version. Wikipedia hasn't been much help between the models. I'm wanting to build a model of the aircraft flying at Omaka in NZ. It has metal wings from an Avro Nineteen, so it looks like the Special Hobby will do the job. I'm just curious about the differences between the two boxes.
  17. Almost had a disaster with the wings. I've tried to represent one set of wings with deeper panel lines than the other. I marked two upper wings and one lower section with masking tape so I wouldn't glue the wrong wings together. Well, I did it anyway! Genius! I pulled the wings apart and glued them back together properly. Doesn't look like I've done much damage. The fit around the guns is pretty shonky between the two wings. A little bit of Tamiya primer on a paint brush should be able to make them look presentable. Cameo from my Xtrakit Swift. She's a filler queen!
  18. Well, I've picked up a Mr Color lacquer paint silver (8). Will do some test spraying on another kit I'm making to see if it's shiny enough for the natural metal. The fuselage is together, the wheel wells are painted and have had a coat of clear for a dark wash. I've been sanding the fuselage trying to fill any seams on the vertical join. Hope to have the wings together soon and together with the fuselage.
  19. Thanks, Plasto and LDS. It looks like decanted AS-12 might actually be a good solution for high speed silver rather than the natural metal. Check out Brett Green's Meteor F8 finished in AS12. Here's a P-51 in Gunze H8 Silver that's come out well. It's not visible in those photos, but you can definitely see the grain up close. You can see it in the silver in my post from yesterday.
  20. Work continues while I wait for my new canopies. I'm picking up two sets on a trip to Wellington this weekend. I was a bit too keen with the knife and had to narrow one of the windows. The Hasegawa kit has come to the rescue again! The rear observation windows were also included on the clear sprue; pattern parts for the MR3 boxing.
  21. We're about ready to close the fuselage. Might be a Wednesday night job. I've bought some Gunze H8 silver for my natural metal Mustang. Was thinking of trying Citadel Runefang steel for the wings and for the overall scheme for the other Mustang. It's my go to paint for high speed silver. I'll need to compare it along side the Gunze and see how they compare. It's either Runefang or Tamiya Flat Aluminium, maybe with a hint of neutral grey.
  22. Panel lines gone from one set of wings. I was going to keep the panel lines on the other kit, as according to this post on the RNZAF proboard the aircraft repainted in HSS had the putty removed from panel lines in the wings. See agalbraith's post. http://rnzaf.proboards.com/thread/17986/rnzaf-mustangs?page=1&scrollTo=178949 However, I think I might putty them regardless. Perhaps with only one pass with the brush painted Tamiya surface primer. See the images below of Mustangs in storage at 1958 at the end of their lives. Unfortunately there aren't any clear shots of wings of aircraft in HSS, but I can't see many panel lines on NZ2409 (factory scheme) or NZ2423 (HSS) http://natlib.govt.nz/records/22306966 http://ndhadeliver.natlib.govt.nz/delivery/DeliveryManagerServlet?dps_pid=IE10718085&dps_custom_att_1=emu
  23. I've been using brush painted Tamiya surface primer, but I think I might invest in some Mr Surfacer for future panel filling.
  24. Removing the panel lines on NZ2425. I'm waiting on some small drill bits to drill out the rocket attachments before the wings go together.
