  4. The C-130 Hercules deserve an updated kit. Airfix can make several versions by planning ahead - H, J and stretched J for RAF and other European nations and US gunship. 1/72 is the right scale for it, too large in in 1/48.

There is a booklet by Cato Guhnfeldt on the N-3PB that was released at the time of the restoration which I consider the best documentation on the aircraft. Guhnfeldt, Cato. Just remember to check the drawings of the pedestals between floats and wing against photos, they have been made too short in some of the earlier kits, possibly because they were based on drawings showing an earlier version than what was actually built - they needed more room under the fuselage for torpedoes and other weapons.

  10. I believe there is another Yak-9 in a military museum in Severomorsk near Archangelsk, and that area is closed to foreigners - easy to get confused. He bought the Yakovlev bureau historical collection some years ago and moved it to his museum. If stuck on measurements or details, try writing the museum. Hei, Using my limited Russian skills, the walk-around aircraft is in the collection of Vadim Zadorozhnogo He made a fortune as an arts dealer and spent some of it on opening a Science and military museum in the outskirts of Moscow in the , specialising in Yakovlev aircraft. It is open to the public, both Russian and foreign. http://tmuseum.ru Just a matter of negotiating the local traffic to get there. Archangelskoye is a district in Moscow. I have´t made it to that museum yet, and having suffered a stroke recently limits my travel plans.
  12. There is no excuse for bad Yak-9 drawings, the survivors in Beograd, Plovdiv and Warszawa that I have seen, looks like they were set aside as monuments and not restored from various bits and pieces. They are all on public view with no restrictions on photography. KE
  13. A new Mosquito makes sense The old mould is worn out and needs replacing. It is one of the best known British aircraft after the Spitfire and Hurricane. A Mosquito rebuild is ongoing to bring the aircraft back to the skies of Britain and maybe the rest of Europe - http://www.peoplesmosquito.org.uk Documentation is easy with Airfix on good terms with the DH Museum. Multiple versions are possible, so several releases to follow. It was used by other nations, making for more decal options and international sales. Size is reasonable, Airfix seems to like kitting twin engined bombers. And I still want a Harvard / Texan / T-6 family as well from Airfix. KE

For those who have never been to Moson: Unlike Telford, there is no standing out in the rain for an hour to get inside to stand in another queue to pay your entry fee in the slowest way possible - Moson has free entry. The Hungarian weather in April is usually much more pleasant than the horizontal rain and sleet found at Telford in November. My preferred way of getting to Moson is to fly down and take a couple of days in Vienna and use the train to/from Moson, the train ride takes less than an hour. The model show is a short taxi ride from Mosonmagyaróvár train station and the city centre, all the taxi drivers know about the "Makett show". The model display is in a sports hall, it is quite well lit and airy - and there is no lack of seats on the sides if you want to sit down and rest your feet. Shopping is split between the sports hall and class room / corridors in the adjacent school - I felt a bit nostalgic since it reminded me of my old school Main currency for model shopping is Euro, Hungarian currency I only use for taxis and food in town (they might accept Euro). You don`t need to understand Hungarian to get around, basic English works reasonably well as long as you are tolerant to various variants / accents. You fully understand what the I in IPMS stands for, Moson is located in central Europe and you have a chance to meet modellers from countries you barely knew existed. You get to meet many of the smaller producers of kits in the East - you can bring up suggestions and offer references for your favourite subject. The team who runs the show have built up quite a bit of routine, taking care of details like setting up signs and keeping the bathrooms in good shape during the days. I was impressed by the assistance I got from the Info desk when I asked about getting a taxi back to the train station. Not only did they call the local taxi company, but one of them insisted on following me to the meeting point for the taxi and offered to help me carry the stash. Well beyond what I expected, the young man manning the desk at the time seemed to genuinely like helping foreigners who were asking all sorts of strange questions. Two items I could want for future Moson events: A semi-organized taxi rank near the sports hall. A possibility to store my purchases so I don`t have to carry them around when going for a second look at the exhibition.

Airfix does not try to replicate the prominent "quilted" appearance of the military Sea King interior, there are a lot of generic bench seats and an attempt at the system operator / navigator station. The new kits fuselage is smooth on the outside and on the inside - something the real thing isn`t. The scoop stretcher could go on the interior wall. I think the Revell offering is a better starting point as it has nails and other surface details, possibly using some parts from the new Airfix kit. There is an opening for several improvement sets, at least one for the "quilted" interior and seats and then adding all the antennae and other bits and pieces that are attached to later Sea Kings, I think other nations upgraded their airframes as well.

  18. It was on sale at Moson. To me it seems like nice, clean mouldings and the shape looks like the aircraft that flies over Old Warden.
  19. They brought a pallet or two of MiG-21MF kits with them to Moson - and they all disappeared in a few hours on Saturday.
