  1. Chaps, what do you 'polish' paintwork with? I get the idea I think, particularly with a NMF scheme, but what do you use? Thanks, in ignorance, Isaneng
  2. As a 14 year old kid, I got a saturday job in the LMS in Rugby - a place called JOTOs (JOhn and TOny, the owners). Apparently my pathetic face stuck to the window and my hours of deliberation about what I could afford, had struck a note of sympathy. Days when new stock arrived, I worked unpaid overtime - just so that I could see what was coming in! This would have been 1981 - 1986 time, Airfix were still the big name but Tamiya (expensive) and Hasegawa (err, yes, also expensive) had some great unusual choices. Trying to decide how to stack boxes.... by brand, by era, by cost..?? I got staff discount and still had no money left! These nostalgia builds have certainly raised a smile, love the thread, thanks a lot chap!
  3. Landed at Gander, prob 2003?? VC10, we parked down the ramp from Concorde. It was doing a charter run, following the dreadful accident in France earlier in the year. The 2 fastest airliners in the world, sitting 200 yards apart. And I didn't take a pic. What a fool I was.
  4. No - probably before my time. Pilots loved the aircraft, centreline thrust, balanced controls, and fast as snot! And we always laughed at the noise reduction profile for departure, 4 Conways were never going anywhere quietly...
  5. I operated VC10s for a tour. The backwards seating may not have been its best selling point, but it had so many safety features, system redundancies, so much power, gents, other than the muppets at the front (sorry...) you have never been so safe!!
  6. bzn20, everyday is a school day, you taught me something new today! Love the explanation of how Cartoontown got its name, thx!!
  7. Yep. Called a windmill start, run down the runway fast enough to spin the prop, turn the engine, then throw the fuel in. Not an everyday occurrence, but no big deal.
  8. 6500hrs on Albert, 1989 - 2009. I look forward to seeing this one progress. I'm guessing we probably threw you out at some stage!
  9. The back of the FN tail turrets was normally metal sheet, holding 2 sliding doors that the gunner closed once he was in situ - I reckon you're probably right to leave those masks off, although Google has failed to give me a definitive answer...
  10. See, I told you, but you wouldn't listen, would you.....................
  11. Don't do it folks, don't get dragged into this build. He's mad I tell you, quite mad - like he's got a bionic eye for building ridiculously detailed tiny little models.. You have been warned....
  12. They are ESM pods - Electronic Surveillance Measures. A number of radio receivers inside them will pick up RF (Radio Frequency) transmissions from any transmitters and they will be displayed on a screen inside, normally with a dedicated ESM operator. By comparing them to known radar systems (different frequencies, scan rates etc), the transmitters can be identified and monitored. Different models of the E-3, for different nations, use different ESM systems - if you look at a British E-3D, you will see that these ESM 'canoes' are missing, replaced with wing-tip pods for a similar function.
  13. Thanks gents, the info and tips are much appreciated!
  14. Gents, How do you guys achieve the mottled upper surface finish prevalent on so many German aircraft types? Mask? Freehand? And if freehand, I assume by airbrush? If so, is that viable on 1/72 aircraft? I am amazed at the finish I see on many of your projects, any tips or general info gratefully received!! Thanks, R
  15. Iain, I believe there's a selector pic on the cloud photo set I sent you- if not, I will send one asap!
  16. With the poor weather in Devon, Johnny decided to crack on with the build. He even put it in a diorama. Nice one Johnny! Whaaat?? I believe him.
  17. The props on the Herc spin at 1021rpm (with your -15 engine). The Allison is a constant speed engine - doesn't matter how slow or fast the aircraft is travelling, the engine/prop spins at a constant speed. With different speeds and power settings, the prop just takes bigger or smaller bites of air to maintain that 1021 rpm. 6500hrs on Hercs, some numbers you don't forget....... Is this the kit that has the external refuel probe for the RAF Herc version? I will be interested to hear your thoughts on it.
  18. Sorry, poor grammar, 2 posts in a row, 1 medium Lanc, 1 bigger Lanc. Excellent, hopefully thats good for all.
  19. Ok chaps, last try, hopefully 2 x Lanc ??
  20. I'm using a PC. Not very well, obviously, but definitely a PC....
  21. Ok, sausages to this - if anyone wants Lanc/Hurri/Spit photos from the BBMF aircraft, drop me a line - that's gotta be easier
  22. I'm trying! Going to put them into an album on google photos, as per your suggestion, and try again..
  23. Ok, I think I got a picture there! Now, how do I make it bigger so we can actually see it?
