  1. Things progresseth. I haven't figured out how to get photos from my Flickr account onto BM via the phone, so you'll have have to wait until I can set up the laptop and do it via steam power. In the meantime, I think I have found Nirvana (the mental state, not the grunge band). Miles Davis streamed via Bluetooth headphones from the MP3 library on the phone, a lovely kit that is giving me no grief and that gentle mental relaxation that comes after a long, hot day at work, then a shower, dinner and a relaxing pastime. For thems wot is following along on the radio (ie all of you, seeing as there ain't no pitchers), I've got the cockpit mostly done (it forgot the paint for the bang seats, didn't it?), the intakes and exhausts, with fan detail, are together, painted and installed, wheel wells are in and painted, and umm... that's it so far. Once I decide if I can add the seats after joining the fuselage, I can stick that together and that will be a big stage out of the way. In the meantime, outer wings, things to go under said wings, and undercarriage bits can, and will be, detached, cleaned up, glued as required, painted and set aside until their moment of destiny arrives. I'm thinking that all the little bits will fill the next few evenings quite nicely. Photos will be added when I can. Thanks for following along.
  2. I'd be more inclined to get a lathe and turn them up from aluminium or ABS plastic tube stock. But that's me.
  3. Ian, thank you for the efforts. As before, I'll order a set when I'm back home (I'm 300km from home at work, and while I do have an internet connection, it's not the best...)
  4. Nice! But ouch. When I'm home again I'll put in an order (I've done stuff through Shapeways, and I know they're not cheap.)
  5. Hurry up and try them on for size then Ian. Seriously, if they'll even come close to fitting, I'll take a set. I could scratch them, but life's too short.
  6. Silver has happened. Despite a few dust particles, it's quite glossy and looks da bomb. I'll cut it back gently with Micromesh when I'm home again and dust another light coat over it, but I'm happy. Good old Humbrol 11. (And if I can figure out to post photos while accessing BM from my phone, I'll add some!)
  7. Does anyone have any knowledge about the 'accuracy' (scale or otherwise) of these paints? They look interesting.
  8. There's only a few I'm missing Col, and the LHS carries Gunze Sangyo, which is not only the specified paint, but also my 2nd favourite acrylic after Xtracrylix (I first used that stuff on my UK visit in 2007, but it's somewhat difficult to get here). The only non-GS colour I want is Tamiya's NATO Black, to give me something a bit less Stygian in the cockpits. I just hope I can manage some time on it every evening...
  9. herpa-derpa-derpa-derp... Paint. Right. Didn't happen. There were more bits to add than I'd remembered, AND I had to craft a replacement UHF aerial for the underside, to replace the one that Airfix in their wisdom mould to one fuselage half. I mean, they can make the 2 on the spine separate, with lovely little wells to put them into, but they can't do summat similar for the one that is most likely to get knocked off... Oh well. The new one is brass, with an integral pin - it'll be proof against just about anything. I also had to stick the canopy on after masking it, which I duly did, and managed to knock it bit skew-whiff at some point. Of course, I didn't pick up on that until the Araldite had set well up... so, the person driving will have to twist his neck a little bit to see through the windscreen (harden up, princess). I've been debating the best way to deal with the orange over silver colour scheme, and have decided to throw caution to the winds, paint the thing silver, let it set up for a week while I'm away, then mask for the orange bits and lay on a coat of white, then the orange. Hopefully that will work out. Silver will happen tomorrow AM, early. If you have seen any of my other recent GB posts, you'll know that tomorrow, early, is going to be a very busy time here in chez RobG. We shall see what transpires. If I get time, I'll drop a pic in here after the silver happens. More anon.
  10. As I said right at the start of this GB, Imma gonna do the Gnat and this bad girl. <insert obligatory box shot, c/w parts and aftermarket> There's a Pavla nose cone, Master metal pitots (because they were cheap) and a new pilot's seat from High Planes - the observer gets to sit on the undersized seat as supplied by Mr Cyber-Hobby (because I'm cheap). I'll use the kit decals, probably the one with the shark's mouth, although that may be subject to change. I'm heading out to work for at least 7 days, so I was casting around for something to do to keep my modelling mojo motoring, and decided that this was a good candidate, seeing as everything I'm currently doing for GBs is pretty well at the stage of not being portable. I'm hoping to get this thing's internals done and the the whole airframe ready for paint before I get back, then I can have a big airbrush session and cover everything in jam. Seeing as I'll be modelling in a small room that's not mine, I've decided to do this'un in acrylics instead of enamels - not so much for the smell, as thinner doesn't overly worry me, but for the ease of cleaning brushes and mopping up any spills that may happen; management get shirty if we make a mess of the accommodations. I'll do the whole thing in acrylics I think, even the outside, just to keep it easy. As I'm using acrylics, I'll throw a coat of rattle can primer over the whole sprue before I start, to help the paint stick a bit better. Hopefully I'll have time to do that and let it dry before I hit the road tomorrow... I've got the sprues washed and have made a short list of the paints I need to pick up on my way out of town, so here's hoping I can make it through 12 hr days with a bit of energy left over! Photos as progress progresses.
  11. Progress is happening, slowly. The cockpits are painted and dry brushed, as are the engines and cowl insides (not that anything's visible once it's all put together). The underside of the wings have a long sink mark in them, so that's been filled and sanded, removing a panel line in the process, but <shrug>, that ain't gonna be a big deal for me. All that remains is seat belts (I'll use Tamiya tape and not add buckles, that way lies madness) and gluing the whole lot into some sort of airyplane shape. I'm waiting on 3 sets of canopy masks from the Big H (2 to use, one for the other box) plus some other bits and bobs for other projects. It actually works well, as I'm away for 7 days for work, so the parcel should arrive a day or so after I get home, which will give me time to stick all the bits together and let them set before I start throwing paint around. Hopefully. More as and when.
  12. Despite the presence of about 6 Spitfire kits in the stash, I've ordered a 48th Airfix PR. XIX from the Big H for this GB. It won't get here for the start of the GB, but that's OK because I got lots to finish first. Hpefully I can do it justice.
  13. I've been considering one of these. It looks great Mike, but how painful is it to build?
  14. Ian, anything further on those printed damper assemblies? I'm thinking that I might start my Bentley as a long term project towards the end of the year, so I'm going to start putting detail bits and references into the box, and these will be a good start. Note to self, start buying small drill bits in bulk and storing them in the box too...
  15. Cookie, I have plans to build the Red Bull P-38 at some time, I'm thinking that the chrome will work well for that seeing as it's polished to wihin an inch of its life. I might have to dig out the Alclad that I have hiding somewhere to get a more war weary finish on the 47 though... Thanks for the link Patrice. I looked, and shipping from there to here is... prohibitive. As is usual from the States. It'll basically double the cost of the kit. I'll keep rolling with the 47s that I have, I think.
  16. Oh, I love the building bit. Hate the painting bit. Which is why I have veritable squadrons of mostly-built-but-not-even-undercoated airframes in my stash. One of my goals this year was to build less and finish more. That's going well, yeah.
  17. Rob G

    de-canting paint?

I've never bothered with gluing the straw onto the nozzle. I use the bendy straws ($3.50 for 100), bend them to 90° and spray into the paint cup on my airbrush. Wait until it stops bubbling, then spray. If I let it sit for a few hours here, I'd have solid paint... The reason I replace the straws is to keep dried paint flakes out of my airbrush, I've found that the paint doesn't stick to the straw, but flakes off as it gets handled, leading to blockages and uglier-than-I'd-otherwise-manage finishes. As always, experiment to find what works for you and your situation.
  18. Buy and modify a Tamiya kit? My pocketses aren't that deep It really is a shame that Revell did such a bad job of the shape, because the kit itself is quite nice. Ah well, good thing I'm not a Thunderbolt anorak, innit? I did actually briefly consider seeing if I could make an eggplane shaped object out of it...
  19. In the interest of complete authenticity, don't forget the rust bumps under the vinyl...
  20. That's all quite possible Patrice, but truth be told, I'm not too worried. This kit cost me $5.00 at a swap meet, and it's more like a cartoon than a real P-47 anyway, so an incorrect propellor and engine are the least of its issues. I'm leaning towards the US markings now, because I want to try my Uschi van der Rosten polishing powders...
  21. Haha. Thanks guys. It's actually not bad, but I'm not sure it'll win any beauty prizes. Regardless, onwards and upwards. The rain has stopped, and it's a lovely day. I might manage to get paint on this today.
  22. Thank you gentlemen. Given the issues with the decals, I may choose the other scheme and call it NMF practice. Or I may just build it the way Revell supplied it and give a very Gallic shrug. C'est la vie!
  23. I have the Xtradecals Boscombe Down 1992 decal sheet, with a Czech bird on it, the one with the frog hammering a tank. I'm in! 2018 you say? Hmm...
  24. I'm glad that someone is doing this version. I had a copy of the kit but sold it a few years ago, and now can't recall who I sold it to so that I can offer to buy it back! Have fun, I'm watching over your shoulder. Sorry about the crumbs.
