And then there were two.. For some reason cutting plastic isn't as much fun as glueing the bits together again, however sometimes you just have to suck it in.
-
A quick mock up of the main parts. No rear looking windows, better get cutting... One gone, one to go...
-
Part 1 is already done - cut out the cabin floor and build a well. A lot more to go so I may bounce around a little
-
Cabin. External: Internal Add in a rear wall and that's it for the cabin. Much work required on the inside, and I'll add or replace a few external fittings along the way.
-
One piece hull and single piece deck The Hull isn't too bad, may be needing a few drain holes and a thicker run strip here and there but otherwise looks fine. The deck has some fittings moulded in that simply require a but of detailing, however it is completely missing the central well for the cabin. I've found a couple of similar builds from this kit and a larger RC version that will give me a basis for a slice & dice. Hopefully when added to web pix of the external fittings it will allow some improvement without too much pain.

Should we be expecting a new Airfix release announcement today?

Hurrah, proper instructions... I think I've been making too many oldies with 1 page sheets recently! Even in 1967 Monogram knew the importance of a sprue diagram...I just wish others would take note! Nice big diagrams...no hunting for the microscope just to determine the build sequence

Wonder if they could be persuaded to make a Bison to sit alongside the Yak? Or even a baby CALF http://www.stormclimb.com/2011/08/28/lockheeds-calf-jast-astovl-aircraft-powered-model-seen-on-google-earth/ And that leads on nicely to the new Farmer...- 593 replies

Patrol Craft Fast (PCF), also known as Swift Boats, were all-aluminum, 50-foot (15 m) long, shallow-draft vessels operated in Vietnam primarilybby the United States Navy, Initially patrolling the coastal areas they later took to the interior waterways as part of the 'Brown-water Navy' where they carried out interdiction, counter insurgency, troop transport and special forces insertion. In total Eighty-four Mark I Swift boats served in Vietnam, with a further twenty reserved for training, however they are frequently overlooked in favour of their more heavily armed and warlike cousins the PBRs, Landing Ships and Monitors with whom they fought alongside. ..... The Brown Water Navy as a whole is rather overlooked in modelling terms, and the PCF is no exception despite it's distinguished service. As far as I'm aware the Revell kit is the only kit generally available and although being rather old (1967), quite basic (61 parts) and lacking in any type of interior detail it appears to be quite accurate and has some potential. .... For the princely sum of £20 inc p+p I now have 2 of these. I shall tackle one and hide the other for a possible future project (original civilian or demobbed perhaps)

I think they are in danger of standing still which could mean a long slow fall similar to how Airfix got in to trouble. Having looked through their releases over the last 12months I was less than overwhelmed. They should have the mainstream Luftwaffe types sown up just as Airfix are now the ones to beat in UK subjects, and FujiGawa in Japanese. Their researchers must have anticipated Airfix renewing their 1940 moulds in time for the anniversary but they missed the ball. If someone goes head-to-head with 32nd scale and the larger 72nd scale types they may be in trouble on the aviation front, and will the Star Wars rush keep them going long term?

I'm just speculating but wasn't Pearl Harbour more than just a few Hollywood fly boys? I believe a potential GB should certainly include far more than just a couple of P-40s and Zeros as the Order of Battle for both sides is long and varied: http://www.navweaps.com/index_oob/OOB_WWII_Pacific/OOB_WWII_Pearl_Harbor.htm Personally I think it's not only ships & planes that should be eligible but also such things as ground vehicles, guns, even figures as long as there is supporting evidence - eg a pic or official report, not just 'random ambulance of the type found in Hawaii circa Dec 41'. ....... Sadly I think I've just disqualified my #1 choice - Life size Kate Beckinsale in a Nurses uniform - as a tribute to the Medical personnel of course (minds out the gutter people! )

Well I for one am glad it's a non-starter because we all know there's only a few types to choose from, as clearly demonstrated by Hollywood. The list of US aircraft present on the day hardly makes for an inspiring read, let alone the Japanese a/c, ships, vehicles etc... I mean how can you justify a GB based on this tiny lot: Douglas B-18 Bolo Douglas A-20A Havoc Douglas C-33 Boeing P-26A Peashooter Boeing P-26B Peashooter Curtiss P-36A Mohawk Curtiss P-40B Tomahawk Curtiss P-40C Kittyhawk Martin B-12 Grumman OAF-9 Goose Douglas BT-2 North American AT-6 Texan Seversky AT-12A Guardsman North American O-47B Stinson O-49/L-1 Vigilant Martin B-12 Boeing B-17C Flying Fortress Boeing B-17D Flying Fortress Boeing B-17E Flying Fortress Consolidated B-24A Liberator Vurtiss A-12 Shrike Lockheed JO-2 Electra Junior Sikorsky JRS-1 Twin-engine Douglas R3D-2 North American SNJ-3 Texan Vought SB2U-3 Vindicator Sikorsky JRS Beech JRB Northrop BT-1 torpedo bomber Grumman JRF Goose Grumman J2F-4 Duck Vought OS2U Kingfisher Consolidated PBY-1 Catalina Consolidated PBY-3 Catalina Consolidated PBY-5 Catalina Brewster F2A-3 Buffalo Grumman F4F-3 Wildcat Grumman F4F-3A Wildcat Douglas SBD-1 Dauntless Douglas SBD-2 Dauntless :) ...and not a Zero to be seen, yet... http://www.ww2pacific.com/aaf41.html

Vickers Wellesley...fits in beautifully with the WW2 Bomber brigade. The Crystal Ball also reveals a special Desert Airforce gift set with Wellesley+Gladiator+Kittyhawk... Of course the Wellesley will arrive the day I finally finish the Matchbox one that's starting to be a long term residence of the bench.- 593 replies

Don't forget the He-111P2 box artwork shows it being attacked by a Blackburn Skua so Airfix may be busy in the near future if all their artwork presages the release schedule. ...maybe on the next He111 artwork they will be shown shooting down their attacker just to even it out a bit, after all not all fighter vs bomber engagements went to plan.

Vickers Wellesley L7717 (Matchbox 72nd)
dpm1did1 replied to dpm1did1's topic in Work in Progress - Aircraft
So very kind... Don't know why I bothered anyway as the centre section is pretty invisible in this scale (even if done correctly). Oh well, at least you can see the corrected pilot and gunners seats so not completely wasted efforts. Grabbed (yet) more paints on the way through town so hopefully I'll be able to move it along over the next few days. -
Swiftly up the Mekong...Revells PCF?
dpm1did1 replied to dpm1did1's topic in Maritime Cold War to 1990
I have received the kits - or should I say the Gift sets. 2 of these, plus a big box and more air bags than I've seen in many a year (but thankfully no foam chips to escape around the room) Once you add in the value of the set as a whole, and the not so subtantial discount over even a bare kit, it definitely works out as a best buy. Now I just have to clear a spot - well actually as I'm limited for space I may have to clear the lot, namely both the Wellesley (hopefully I'll get the paint I need today to finish it) and the Dornier 28D that I've been experimenting on, plus the associated junk that appears the moment a box is opened. -
SR 177/SR 53, any kits ever made?
dpm1did1 replied to Spitfires Forever's topic in Aircraft Cold War
I have to ask but why would Airfix even want to aquire the Ursus mould? Unlike their own original mould it holds no historic value. I doubt it would even be worth placing on the (dying) kickstarter programme. Its appeal is very limited. Not only is it an old mould but the real never saw service so wouldn't fit in with many niches besides the lovers of prototypes and experimental craft. Should Airfix ever see fit to release a kit they would so far better scanning the real deal and making it afresh. Tbh I think even this is far down the priority list considering the number of lesser known/built/operated types and variants that would get a shout before it, even in the 'every 3rd-ish release' schedule that Airfix have settled on for these. You could argue that being only a prototype doesnt automatically make it a 'never' but the type itself just doesn't hold the real life mystique of the other major Cold War political casualty, namely the TSR2, and nor does it I suspect lend itself to as many mods and schemes that makes its larger cousin such an attractive Wiff subject. May as well conclude it will never reappear from a major manufacturer (even Revell, who flirted with Luft 46, would be a mighty long shot at best). One final note: Airfix would do well to avoid packaging any further old moulds in new style boxes. To many fingers have been burned with folk expectations dashed on examining the plastic - I didn't expect much from the DH88 but even I didn't bother building instead simply used it for spares). Please let such old uncompetitive moulds die with dignity, and start badgering the Ltd Run kit makers for (even one to 1980s standards would be a huge improvement)
