  1. As a follow on from my recent ICM 1/144 TU144, I thought I would make a start on my old 1970 something odd boxing of the VEB Plasticart 1/100 TU-144. I bought this 2nd hand I think some of the paperwork comes from 2 boxings as some states a date of 1969 and other pape4rs have a date suggesting anything through to 1975 - no matter how old it is, the kit is pretty crude, made of very brittle bakerite type plastic, has unusable decals and very crude documented/translated instructions. And then there are the raised panel lines but I guess that goes with the age of the kit. All that said, it is however a good example of the TU144 Prototype and in a scale that works for me. I've ordered some replacement decals from the US and await a ticket from the post office to say I owe them money to clear it. The plastic was old and extremely greasy, so after 3 days of soapy soaking and a clean down, I have primed the larger kit parts and installed the cabin / cockpit windows. The droop snoot nose will visibly appear hollow and empty in 1/100 so I have started work making the interior nose shelf fittings and tidied up the forward pressure bulkhead area which would otherwise appear hollow if the model is displayed with the nose down - as I intend to do so unless the plan falls apart later on. So, this is what it is in the boxing in case anyone else is considering attempting the kit. I'm British and bound to be biased towards Concorde and until handling this kit, I didn't have any real idea of what the prototype TU144 actually looked and felt like closer up in terms of detail and shape, other than what I could make from the old archive screen footage. She's a strange shape - almost cubic along the base of the forward end of the fuselage and she just lacks the graceful curves and smoothness that the prototype Concorde had - but.. it flew first, broke a world record for the race for SST and didn't crash unlike it's latter production design - it's just so very industrious despite what anyone has to say about plans and designs being stolen. I am really looking forward to building this big girl - I'd like to stand it up against the 1/100 Doyusha Concorde. Thanks for looking in.
  2. 'Dratt, Dratt and Double Dratt, do something Muttley!!!' Something a little different here - this is MPC's 1/32 Wacky Races Mean Machine, featuring that dastardly swine Dick and his sidekick Muttley. After a long bath in a bowl of Dettol to remove the chrome plating, the kit assembled easily as it is intended as a children's snap-type kit however glue, filler and lot of care painting the model will only bring it to look like something close to the cartoon variant. I 3D printed the front cone/spike as the kits part is very kid friendly and blunt, and I've used Candy pink and purple from Alcad and SMS Metallics. Mr Colour for the solid coats of yellow and black, and the grey shades. I added some levers and extra bits - every time I look at those levers I wonder what contraption and dastardly device might appear from within. A lot of fun, and my own personal favourite from the line up of Wacky Racers. Here you go, you can decide if they won their race....
  3. 10 years after this original post thread and I've finally mustered up the courage to purchase mine - picking up from Telford this weekend from Hannants - got 10% discount but it still a lot of money making my 1/200 Trumpeter Titanic puchase feel cheap.
  4. crikey - that was an amazing journey looking through your WIP - absolutely brilliant - stunning dedicated and committed modelling all the way through
  5. love you choice of subject - yep, you dont get tired of these metal dogs
  6. that is incredible weathering/chipping effects there - way out of my league of skills
  7. very nice - I bought the larger variant of this kit last year and have it half painted on the top shelf of models being forgotten. My version didn't have the diorama base - just the club. I've had to slowly shop about for bits and figures to create a diorama - probably the reason the model is now on the shelf being forgotten...... You've done a great job - and from a film that inspired and expanded the minds of many of the key ILM original staff.
  8. being a lover of all things civil and 1/144, I couldn't overlook your thread - a great build. I am not sure if we get to see Varig's 76's in the UK, 76's quickly becoming rarer these days in the UK now hat BA have retired their fleet.
  9. blooming brilliant - great blending of panel shades - way beyond my skills. It looks superb.
  10. That's a very good point you make there as I noted from the very specific aircraft profile illustration and decal guide provided by Braz, that the outline of the 77102 variant wings did not match what the kits wings looked like - so thank you for pointing that out, it makes sense now.
  11. Many thanks - at first glance, the kit looks fairly simple and straight forward, but like the Revell and Airfix 1/144 Concordes, its the join of that long delta wing edge up against the fuselage that gets you working, and the wing underside joins - the kit turns quickly into a major filling and sanding venture. I had to refer back to my WIP pictures and reminded myself that the fuselage halves kept collapsing in on themselves too - I recall using some tubing inserts to keep the correct profile of the fuselage so that the longer wing edges left minimal gaps for filling.
  12. Yep Eric, this is the ICM version, Revell borrowed the moulds for a while and then ICM continued to manufacture from them. I think Braz Models was also involved somewhere in the process too - they offer all the different engine varriants as aftermarket parts and a superb wing profile correction kit. You'll catch up with it on our table at the nationals this coming weekend.
  13. Many thanks for taking the time to comment - my father took me to the airshow so this diorama has a personal touch, for the wrong reasons
  14. any more to report yet please...... eagerly waiting
  15. never mind about that Airbus, whats happended to that 1/72 Concorde work of art of yours....!! Keenly waiting in the shadows to see more
  16. just checking back in for any updates on the speedbird here. My nose and forward fuselage sections finally go in for scanning this weekend - I'll let you know how the nose-job goes
  17. I'll enjoy watching this build for a few reasons. I am an avid civil modelling fan (like Marmite, you either are or your aren't), also I have built many Zvezda kits which are superbly crisp and enjoyable to build however I am still trying to convince myself that Airbus designed a nice looking aircraft in the A350 at a time when Boeing launched their beautiful 787. All the best with those windows, always the most time consuming stage J
  18. Brought back to life and finally completed from having being sat on the shelf of doom since 2018, here is my attempt to model Aeroflot's ill-fated CCCP-77102 that crashed at the 1973 Paris Air Show killing all 6 crew on board and 8 of the local Goussainville town residents. This is the ICM 1/144 kit with Braz Models decals for CCCP-77102 (451). An awkward kit to build, challenging and fiddly to the last. The Braz decals were of superb quality but extremely brittle. I've deliberately modelled her to reflect the canards deployed for take off and the rear undercarriage in the process of folding and twisting up into the engine nacelles which I thought might add a touch to this rather unique shaped Russian attempt to win the world over in the passenger SST race back in the early 70's. Starting with a picture of the actual aircraft, showing the rear undercarriage in the process of folding inwards for storage in the engine nacelle centre section.
  19. Super cool - back on the bench - I'm still waiting for my nose and forward fuselage halves to come back from the scanner / 3D print dept at my bosses home study. I shall enjoy watching the progress of your build and if you don't mind, I'll use all your solutions and advice to get my 4 big birds looking accurate next year when I hope to start full assembly of them all in tandem. I keep telling myself I can do it and the known issues with this kit won't bother me but I'm starting to have my doubts...... Perhaps I should give my GP advance warning of what I will be taking on so he can get me on a suitable medication to cope with the side effects....
  20. wow - an amazing walk through of a build. I've built this bird a few times over and had forgotten how awkward the main undercarriage and fuselage insert could be. A great choice of airline too BA anyday..
  21. wow, a Vulcan in 1/48! is this the fabled kit whose original designer bricked up the moulds behind a wall? It's huge!
