  1. Yup...

Sorry this chap didn't make it over the line. I haven't pushed it because I can paint a lot in common with this other chap, the usurper emperor of Britain, Carausius:

He and Constantine didn't share much in terms of policy, or indeed destiny, but they did share a lot of purple and leather-brown.

Here is Kostas Megas so far.

  2. Please add me on to the list.

I was annoyed that these beautiful flats only appeared a few weeks before the end of the recent PzKfw 38t build.

    Zinn 38t

However, in looking at these I found these:

    Zinn Tiger

Apart from the gun's mantlet needing to be straightened out, I think it looks pretty good.

I'm surprised its proving so tricky to get this over the line. Fingers crossed.

    Stuart: You were right!

I was hoping to be posting about now with his nibs' face painted....and then spent the whole morning failing to get the upper back of the cuirass goldenified before remembering this conversation. One quick coat of Gunze Mr Metal Primer and as it's as easy as pie.

My apologies.   I meant 1 November.    There is still another month for lobbying.   The poll will run 1-14 November.

I wondered. That did seem early.

I'm impressed with your build rate. I usually DNF. Have pity, Enzo.

Never mind that metaphysical stuff@Enzo the Magnificent. A much more important question is, "if the early/late GB gets through the bunfight, will you make it an extended gb because we'll need two models?"

  7. Hi. Here is a fairly recent resin kit from SGF/Masterclass/Soldiers. It's the first resin model, as opposed to white-metal model, I've seen from them. It's very nice but, unlike white-metal figures there are some bubbles in the casting and on the casting from, I suppose, mold bubbles. But it's pretty good. Clean-up is of course a lot easier with resin.

Navarchus Carausius was an admiral in the British Fleet who styled himself "Imperator Borealis" or "Emperor of the North" in the late 3rd century in Britain and ruled a "Gallic Empire" from 286 to 293 A.D. The walnut base with a step is by Richard Wharton at Oakwood bases and I'm planning to build up a little bit of a wharf on which to stand the figure. Here he is posed with blutac glue.

I'm really looking forward to a first go at water effect and painting the metals, as opposed to polishing the white metal.

Thanks Stuart. That is a very good point. The book where I've read this suggests putting the tamiya clear paints straight on to the metal. But you have made me think! A coat of Gunze Mr Metal Primer might have made this go a lot better.

I was posting today to say I wasn't going to make it, but I see that we've been extended. Hooray!

    Here he is currently:

230914a More white and gold washed and out lines

The gold has had a wash and some outlining with raw umber, and the first shade and highlight of the white tunic is done.

I'm now away on holiday but will have 7/10 till 15/10 inc. to get done, which is maybe do-able. See you 7/10 on this one.

  9. Gawd help us! This has needed a lot of fitting together before painting.

    Thanks Stuart and James.

Here's the magic-sculp to fit the cloak on his left arm better.

230907a Cloak fitting back 230907b Cloak fitting front

These then needed a lot of smoothing in, before gluing the arm into the cloak. Then more magic-sculpt and furtling to fit the helmet inside the arm and hand while letting the sword hang naturally.

    230907c Helmet & arm fitting 1 230907d Helmet & arm fitting 2 230907e Helmet & arm fitting 3

And finally it's done, albeit a week later than I'd hoped.

Nice to see a figure on the go. I'm rubbish at them myself, so I'll tag along. Reckon you'll be using more than 5 colours though...

    Stuart

I wouldn't say you're wrong, Stuart, but for what it's worth here are the undercoat colours at least:

    230908a paints

White with grey to make off-white, choice of fleshes, purple and darker purple for purple leather, red and leather for red leather and yellow and orange clear for the gold.

Here he is back to where he was a week ago(!)

230911a gold white and eyes started

The clear painting on the bare metal is tricky. It needs to go on in a single pass as brushing it out makes the earlier coats drag off and it needs to dry hard before subsequent coats. You can barely see it, but the sword hilt and trousers and tunic have been undercoated with different colours of off-white. His iridae and pupils have been painted in in raw umber. The iridae are sculpted on which I'm not normally keen on: it stops one deciding oneself where the iridae should go, and it makes it awfully difficult to do blue eyes. It does make it an awful lot easier to get the eyes symmetrical.

'not at all sure there's time to finish this not least because I'm away on holiday in a fortnight and will miss the last week of the GB. We'll see.

Thanks for looking and see you later.

  10. Thanks Stuart @81-er and James @Courageous Last project was indeed St.Hubertus.

I've had several steps forward with Kostas Megas here, but a couple back also. As an aside here he is standing beside a ruler.

    230831d height

I said he was 70mm, but you can see he's not quite. He does tower above 54mm wretches nonetheless.

Here is the resin pavement drilled out and a start of carving to fit the lugs under his feet, and then on the base with the edges filled with magic-sculp and sanded down a bit.

230831e Drilled base 230902a Base smoothed in.

There were a couple of spots which needed a little filler:

230902b Foot hole 230902c No Foot hole

I'm not at all sure why I like purple and lilac felt under my bases, but I definitely do. Here it is.

    230902d Felt

This was cut out with tamiya 4cm tape and stuck on with masks of the same and 3M spray mount. It seems a bit strange to finish the base first but I think it'll making completing easier.

I then thought I could stick his legs to the base and prime the legs and the base together, and then assemble the cuirass polished, and his head primed before completing the construction. This would also let me paint his eyes so that they'd be well dried before finishing construction:

    230903a Axial primed

I thought too that I could colour the polished metal at this point to cut down the masking needed. This was with tamiya clear acrylics. Danilo Cartacci suggests using straight yellow and then his washes make it look a better colour. Neat however, it looks a bit green. So, this is yellow clear 5 : 1 orange clear:

    230904a Gold wash front

This does work really well but it does highlight imperfections:

    230904b gold scratches

These are barely visible to the naked eye but I was concerned that they'd be all too obvious when I start getting on some washes. I'd prepared the metal with a wire brush and then I tried tamiya polishing compounds: they didn't serve to polish it at all, presumably because the metal is too hard, but they did darken the metal until more wire brushing. That was clearly enough to make these scratches. I've also found that the fit of his cloak needs quite a bit of love. So, he's gone backwards a bit.

Here he is up to date. The gold came off pretty easily with a tamiya thinners-soaked cotton bud and then the metal has been smoothed out with 0000 wire wool. I think it's scratch free now and it doesn't damage the detail too much.. The left arm is taped and blu-taced on and then the cloak lined with bits of the epoxy putty molded against clingfilm on the figure.

230904c Gold off and arm + cloak fitting

Thanks for looking and see you later.

  11. Hello. A late entry, but do-able.

    230829a Box

This is an Art Girona figure of Constantine the Great. So a Roman emperor, which @Wez tells me is Southern European enough, from Serbia, whose flag, @JackG tells me, is on the GB banner. He, Constantine not Jack, was acclaimed in York, and so he also fits with my people-from-Yorkshire collection. He is nominally 54mm but actually more like 70mm.

    Here are bits and pieces:

    230830a Bits

I got the base on the right at the Montrouge show in April. Its very neat, but I don't know the maker. The resin pavement is from Adrian Hopwood/Bash Models, £2.50 at the mighty Easingwold Show.

I want to try a couple of new things, being gold-coloured metals with tamiya clear colours on the polished white metal, and "transparent" painting the jewels on the helmet and leather pieces. I'm also going to build him onto the final base before painting which I haven't tried before. Famous last words, I know, but that, and the fact that he is essentially in just five colours should mean this is doable in the time remaining. The five colours are flesh, white, purple, red leather and gold. Looking at the bits and pieces I should also be able to prime the painted bit and polish and varnish the natural metal bit without any masking. So that too should hopefully speed things along.

Here's the pavement on the base, and scored and then sawn-up to fit.

230830b Sizing up base 230830c Base scratched 230831a Base

and here is the figure assembled with blu-tac onto the supplied base to let me see where to drill out the new resin base.

See you later and thanks for looking.
