Telford 2022 was our first public gathering, and we hope to grow the group.

    Terry,

Sorry I did not come back to you on this. I have made a fair few drones, but this is the first target-drone I've completed. Hence my not springing to the SIG. You don't accept any old drone I imagine?

Anyway, I have got various drone plans for GBs this year and will keep you posted if any of them get to the finish line before Telford.

    Regards,

  2. So, that polished out OK except where there was some dust stuck in the paint. Little resprays there.

Then details painted: canard-ish aerials white (Humbrol 34) and others darkish grey (H106, ocean grey). Undercarriage well is Humbrol 126 Medium Gray to match the Mr.Color C307 FS360320 on the sensor globe and undercarriage. According to other BM posts the match should be H127. The decals go on easily with Microscale solutions. There aren't any decals for the sensory dome for whatever reason and they're punched out of Fantasy Printshop block colour.

240127a Decals and details paint top 240127b Decals and details paint bottom

    Nearly there!

    Hi Alan,

Never entered any of my models in a competition entry before but I'm considering giving it a go at Leeds.

Are there any details of how to enter, classes, etc. yet?

    Thanks

    Poster2024

    There are!

    Leeds Open Miniature Competition 11/2/24.

    New Dock Hall,

    Royal Armouries, Leeds.

Competition Entry will be open from 10am to 12.30pm.

The competition area will be closed for judging at 12.30pm.

Awards will be announced after 3.00pm

Cost of entry, for all classes = £2.00 per model. All entries must be the sole work of the person, or persons, named on the entry slip.

Entrants will be provided with an entry slip for each model with space to describe the work done on the entry: this will be particularly important in the vehicular classes to allow fair judging of Straight-kit, modified and scratch-built entries.

Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards may be awarded in each class. There will be no indication of awards made before the awards are announced at or after 3.00pm. All entries should remain on the competition tables until 4.30pm.

    Leeds Open

This will be an “open” competition in all senses:

Firstly, the competition is open to all. Membership of any club or IPMS etc. is not a condition of entry.

Secondly, the judging will be open. That is to say that gold, silver and bronze awards will be made on merit and not competitively: no 1st, 2nd and 3rd. That is to say that any number of models, or none, in each class, might be awarded a medal. We consider this to be fairer and more merit-based. It does have another aspect, being that the number of classes in each genre will be very many fewer than at the previous competitions we have run in Huddersfield and Halifax. There will be awards for Senior and Junior Best in Show

Judges of the appropriate expertise and experience have been drawn from the organising clubs, and elsewhere. The judges’ decisions will be final.

Please forewarn the organisers of any model or diorama of more than 60 x 60cm area, or more than 120cm long. We would hope not to have to exclude any model on the basis of size. The organisers reserve the right, however, to exclude models, if necessary, in the interests of fairness, or avoiding offence to other visitors to the show, or indeed for any other reason.

    Classes:

    1          Aircraft 1/72 and smaller

    2          Aircraft 1/71 and larger

    3          Military Vehicles

    4          Civilian Vehicles

    5          Ships

6          Historical Figures over 65mm Inc mounted

7          Historical Figures under 65mm Inc mounted

    8          Historical busts all scales

9          Flats (including dioramas and vignettes)

    10        Fantasy figures all scales

    11        Fantasy busts all scales

    12        Dioramas/ box dioramas

13        Vignettes: three or fewer figures with or without a vehicle

    14        Miscellaneous

15        Junior (Any subject: sole work of miniaturist or miniaturists < 17 years of age)

The judges will move models between classes if they consider that the entered model is not in the most appropriate class. Entries will not be disqualified thereby.

  4. Hello. Yet another Blitzbuild DNF for me. This was the recent Christmas Blitzbuild and I was defeated by the photoetch.

    231227a DNF

The gear doors and pitots, and the canard-like aerials are OK, but the blade aerials under the fuselage just have no positive location to stick. Having finally got them on square, or so, I thought some coats of gloss gunze lacquer would stick them on good and proper but this was not going to be on time.

240108a Topside sprayed and sanded 240108b Underside sprayed and sanded

This works pretty well but not so well as to stop me busting off the blade aerials, again. They're replaced here with 15 thou card and if I do another of these (there are 2 in the box), that'll be plan A. The black gloss makes an unforgiving undercoat and the bald patches are where I've sanded back rough points and some matt-finish bits.

    Here it is sprayed again.

240111a Basics sprayed 240111b Top basics sprayed

There are still some rough bits, especially on the port side of the fuselage bottom but I'm hoping to polish those out with Tamiya compound and not have to spray a third time. The black is Mr Color C2. The grey bits and pieces are C307 and the propeller is Mr Surfacer 1500 white.

Thanks for looking and see you later.

  5. Hello.

This is one popular GB. There are already more than 4 pages of entries.

I am amazed that there aren't hordes of 1/72 beaufighters. So, here is one.

    240106a Box

I want to do this OOTB. So, the only additions are decals:

240106b Contents and Xtradecals and Aviaeology decals 240107a Aviaeology and Mig reference

I wanted to do a Dallachy wing plane because they were so beaten-up looking. The Aviaeology decals for these are no longer available but happily there is one, EO-T, on this Xtradecal sheet. I did get the Aviaeology stencil-sheet which has a few stencils not on Airfix' sheet. The reference material is the Aviaeology decal instruction sheet which has all you need to know about these including diagrams of re-paints on individual airframes. This is available to download for a few quid.

I previously weathered a 1/72 tank using the Mig Jimenez methods detailed in his book and I've wanted to try these on a plane. So, that is the "reference" for the beat-up look.

See you in a bit: 2 x KUTAs to be seen to.

Great attempt - sorry to hear about the family stuff, hope it all smooths out with a bit of time for reflection.

Thanks: I think I've given you the wrong impression! The family are all fine but however much they reflect they continue to think that talking, eating, telly watching and playing cards together is more important than blitzbuilding!

  7. Ah me!

Yesterday was more than averagely frustrating. Many bits of family nonsense, especially taxi-ing. I also notice in the last several months that I can't get by on no sleep like I used to. I totted-up the time as I went along and I've plenty of time, but I'm afraid I've got things I really do have to do today.

Here's as far as I got:

    231227a DNF

This was 12.30am today. Getting the photo-etch details on was not good. There is very little help in terms of pins and hole, lugs &c. It's also terribly delicate. I'm hoping that several sprayed on coats of gloss black paint can act as a glue. Having given up too on the BBGB I can paint the details with enamels and not vallejo-style acrylics and that has got to be better.

There is an upside! I do like the kit, and there's another one in the box, and I've learnt a lot about the kit. So, in May Blitzbuild I think I'll have another go. I think there's quite a bit more prep one could do within the rules and I'd replace some but not all of the photoetch with plastic-card. But imminently do-able, I think.

So, see you in May and apologies.

I was going to do a ukraini one but the more I think about a black prototype one-and-don't-have-to-worry-about-panel-lines(!) the more attractive a prospect that becomes.

This seemed a better and better idea. I thought I'd check what colour the missiles would be on a black prototype and, according to BPK's instructions, there are no missiles. So, this is definitely the way to go: the thought of getting 32 etch fins square on the 4 rockets was giving me the screaming ab-dabs.

    231226b Restart

This is just to record a start time but you can see the flanges around the pylons at the innermost part of the wings.

    231226c Pylons off

    Here it is minus-flanges.

Then bits that can't go on till after painting. I like to try to keep these on the sprues to make holding easier for painting.

    231226d Nosewheel holder

    And here they all are.

    231226e Most add-ons done

These are the propeller and sensor dome. Between these is a little part for the back of the fuselage. That fits very well. There's a bit of engine detail on it. Leaving it off has let me put a sprue-handle on the model to help me paint.

So now, before paint I need to get on the rest of the plastic and photoetch details, wash, metal primer on the etch parts and spray. 'Piece of cake!

    See you later,

  9. Merry Christmas!

    231225a Xmas Breakfast

Breakfast unchanged except Mrs.Tura's excellent glazed ham. How she does this now that Future polish has dissappeared remains a mystery.

    Yesterday update:

231224a Xmas eve start 231224b Xmas eve finish

This is just all smoothing out smoothed out. So, ready for details and then paint. I was going to do a ukraini one but the more I think about a black prototype one-and-don't-have-to-worry-about-panel-lines(!) the more attractive a prospect that becomes.

    Goodwill to all BlitzenBritModellers.

  10. Hello. Un-inspired by the extension, if you know what I mean, I had a bit of a leisurely start,

    231224f Restart

before smoothing out and sanding down and bits of superglue and accelerator as filler. Then Mrs.T told me it was time to do some chores and not quite done with that:

    231224g Smoothed out

    So now 5'10" down.

I heart-searched a bit about the wing root joins. I previously spent a lot of time on an MQ-1 losing that join only to find out that it's a very obvious join on the real thing where it breaks down to transport. So, I've kept them. I haven't done the jon between the fuselage top and bottom at the nose, and I managed to bust-off and re-glue one of the booms...but Mrs.Tura is not always the easiest to gainsay...

    See you later,

  11. Merry Christmas!

231222a 'nother box 231222b 'nother bits

This is the Big Planes Kits (very small) model of the Turkish Bayraktar TB2 drone extensively used in Ukraine and earlier in Nagorno-Karabakh. I was going to do the much simpler Aztec Models TB2 but it arrived without decals, which still haven't shown up. Maybe it can be a later (shorter) BBGB later in the year.

Before hearing about @Enzo the Magnificent's latest extension till 27/12/23 I thought I'd need to try to Superhero this today. So, after and evening of prep I was good to go at midnight last night:

    231224a Start

So, the halves of the fuselage, air-scoop above the fuselage, tail-booms and  wings have been cleaned up as have the halves of bits that will need a joint line dealt with.

The bottom of this large NACA-style scoop,

    231224b pesky NACA scoop

and the bits of etch to go inside,

    231224c pesky etch

    are a bit painful.

The rest of the assembly is easy-peasy but took me an hour longer than planned bedtime:

    231224d stuck

    So, 3'10" down.

Sleep followed by reading Enzo's latest, followed by another sleep and breakfast.

    20231224_093748 20231224_094442

After a concerning HbA1C in 2022, I have ditched marmalade toast, fresh orange and sugar for salad sandwich, polish sausage and atorvastatin: I might live long enough to clear the stash now: 253 years.

    See you later.

I had something pretty cool lined up for this GB - going with the Great Escape option of segments totalling 24h.

With the new dates I won't be able to do it, because I have the usual Christmas commitments all day 24-25.

I'll do it anyway as a personal challenge, but I wonder if you'd consider renewing the end date as the 27th, but people going out to then can't start until the 25th?

I had not previously noticed this! I think @Enzo the Magnificent would be reluctant to extend after the UK Bank Holidays. We'll see.

I'll have to start tomorrow and finish boxing day. Blitzbuilding on Christmas would only achieve bitterness on Mrs Tura's part approaching my own.

Thanks to my LMS for preparing this for me, wonder what it is?. All I know is that it is not something I have built before (according to the shop owner) so should be a challenge as I may have to adapt paints etc.

So far the plan is to open this just after lunch on the 25th with a finish line on the 26th. Who knows  I may even get to have a sleep.

That is a big box for a blitz build, Mr.Lemur.

    Top plan mate!

I was looking for some Spanish bombs for a starfighter at Aztec models and found this:

    231201a Box 231201b Bits

The parts have arrived looking like this and I'm not too sure if they are printed or cast, or a mixture of the two. There aren't any mold-blocks, but there aren't any 3D-printing supports either. While that is all good, and pro-blitzbuild, there are no pigging decals in the box. Aztec said in July that they would send them on "immediately", but still nothing. I'm on tenterhooks.

So, a tiny change of plan. The Aztec decals still haven't shown-up. I've shifted my affections to this:

231222a 'nother box 231222b 'nother bits

This is one of two models in the box which is complete with photo-etch and 3D-printed propellers. A lot cheaper than the Clear-prop one and even a bit cheaper than the Aztec one.

There is a lot more prep of course. I'm hoping to get it ready to stick, start sticking at midnight, sleep and then finish paint  (gunze lacquers)and decal before midnight. So, the superhero option, but with the option of total failure followed by the great escape.

No idea what I'll be building but it's sure to be something with wheels or tracks.

To confirm, is it anything that was involved on D-Day itself, or can it be during the ensuing battle for Normandy? I'm happy enough to restrict my choice to 6 June.

Pat(@JOCKNEY), this question seems to have been lost in the subsequent how-to-paint-D-Day-stripes-stramash. is there an answer? If not is 24/6/44 OK?
