  1. I think that's the best Merlin I've seen fitted to the Airfix kit - simply stunning. I chickened out on mine and closed everything up - I'm feeling quite ashamed of myself now after seeing your fantastic work!
  2. ..and of course everyone else's dad had an actual Merlin engine in their garage, right? (Retrieved from a Fairey Barracuda wreck in Northumbria, and completely restored over a 10 year period.)
  3. Thanks for posting that. It brings back some fond childhood memories. My dad was heavily involved in the UK aviation preservation scene in the 70s and 80s and counted a few of the scene's luminaries as friends, which meant I got to meet them and in the case of Peter, to go and visit his house (or more specifically his garage!) and see progress. Indeed I think my dad donated some of the parts he'd collected to, certainly, Peter's first build. Other fond memories - going with my dad and Tony Agar looking for Mosquito parts in scrap yards in South Wales, and getting a ride in Spencer Flack's distinctive Rolls Royce. Happy days!
  4. I've bought exactly the same 'sticker set' to do this aircraft as I want to get a 1:24 IXe into my collection.. It's rare for one of the Wingleader books to have duff gen! I've also bought a conversion kit to do a low back XVIe, which I also want in the collection! Could that be an option for you too? https://www.buchonscalemodels.com/products/1-24-supermarine-spitfire-mk-xvie-resin-conversion-kit2
  5. I enjoyed it immensely. There's some nice engineering going on. In particular, the wing to fuselage connections was really quite clever, but quite fiddly.. (Though that may have been down to my 'skills'.) I had harboured thoughts of making my own masks and doing a non-standard subject, but chickened out in the end and did the box version. I do have another in the stash, so will be more adventurous next time. Here it is sat next to the Kotare Spitfire I made just before it.
  6. You're doing great work here. Interesting that you've come across a couple of the snags that I also encountered! Though my windscreen piece was fine. I've got a few more in the stash to build and I'll take inspiration from some of the lovely detailing you've done!
  7. This is just fantastic! The whole thing is just jaw-dropping. Bravo. A project like this makes it so much harder to resist buying one of these Lancs (never mind three!) And living in Northampton myself, (well Daventry, so close enough!) you're a near neighbour too!
  8. Well, I can't help you on the space front But the Mark IX Tamiya has dropped quite a lot in price since I bought mine... I paid nigh on £!00, but I see they are going for a lot less these days. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Supermarine-Spitfire-Mk-IXc-Aircraft-Tamiya/dp/B002PHZ024/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1434543339&sr=8-1&keywords=tamiya+1+32+spitfire
  9. Ever thought of going up a scale and trying either one of the Tamiya 1/32 Spitfires or the Revell Mark II Stix? I'd be fascinated to see what you could do with a bigger canvas!
  10. Really lovely models Stix, and highly motivational to a fellow brush painter who is currently building two of the Airfix version!
  11. I took advantage when Roy had his 'no postage applied' special offer and bought the whole range of add-ons for this model!
  12. It's a lovely model. I'm currently building two!
  13. As a non-air brush modeller myself I must admit I do find your work really inspiring.. I was actually quite pleased with the finish I got on my last two models - looking at your photos makes me realise how much room for improvement I've got!
  14. Stix, how did you get such a tidy result on the canopy framing? I'm also building a 1/48 scale Airfix Spitfire (the mark I/II though, rather than the Vb) and even using some pre-cut masks on the canopy, I didn't get a result as good as yours!
  15. Fairey Barracuda 1/72 scale! I have some wonderful boyhood memories of going with my dad to salvage one of these in Scotland. The Merlin was complete and the restoration group my dad belonged to restored it beautifully.
