III and A-3J-3P/RA-5C.  All still have some faults and foibles but no kit is 100% perfect or 100% accurate, not even products from the much-vaunted Japanese manufacturers.  The Tamiya Sea Harrier springs to mind as a "could and should have been so much better" kit; others will have their own betes noirs but let's save those for another day.😀

     

     

     

    But if one compare the 1/72 scale P-51D Mustang from Lindberg (that shapeway almost fits to the not so late Matchbox and Hasegawa kits) with the ones from Airfix and Revell from the same era Lindberg made one Mustang that was much more accurate. 

     

    I agree with you concerning those Airfix kits from the 70's and 80's are the real nice ones as "Vintage kits" including the Super Mystere and F4D-1 Skyray...

    I would say that the 50 years old Matchbox kits of the 70's are a lot better than the Airfix kits from the 50's and 60's. And most of us probably have better experience of building the Matchbox kits during the 70's than building the Airfix kits. Just take a look at the Matchbox P-51D and compare that one with the older ones from Airfix and Revell. Why Revell hasn't retired their own old mould and replaced it with the Matchbox or an new 1/72 scale Mustang is a bit of an enigma...

  4. I remember an old movie about an homecoming pilot or bombardier trying to settle down in the US after the war. In the ending scenes he was going among B-17 bombers lined up for scrap. Anyone knewing the name of that movie?

  5. I am not against "vintage kits". In fact, I usually am among the first to buy them. But I also want those good "vintage kits" that don't fool the builder (as the old 1/72 scale Revell P-51D Mustang).

     

    Airfix still has many nice kits, better than the Whirlwind helicopter that we havn't seen for ages. There are better moulds to dust of. Kits that isn't that much "of scale".

     

    What about these 1/72 scale kits?

    The F4D-1 Skyray, the F-86D Sabre and the F-84F Thunderstreak? And wasn’t the A-7 Corsair a rather nice kit? And the  F2H Banshee? What about the A-1H Skyraider and the Dassault Super Mystere?

     

    And the N.A. 39 Buccaneer? Well, maybe not that one... ;)

    It's not about taxes. It's about retailers that doesn't knew what crap they are selling. And the want to earn money...

     

    Airfix P-51D goes for 99 SKr compared with an Revell P-51D for 129 SKr...

    26 GBP here, I guess even with new prices it still should be for less than 30 quids. This is "upgraded" kit - PE sheet is small and negligible but at least decals are decent. Certainly not cheap but this price seems to be OK, this kit is large after all.

     

     

    The only one I can think of is the F-5 Tiger, which by the way I don't think has been relaunched. But here lies another absurdity of Italeri's releasing policy - such good kits are sold very rarely, instead of being on permanent sale or at least regularly reissued.

     

     

    Thanks for this information. This indeed explains very well the surprising price increase of Italeri models some time ago. I see that the Italian government loves business so hard that business has trouble sitting down.

     

     

    As you can see from the example of the P-51D from Revell, given above, this does happen. This P-51D is no exception, old Frog or Heller kits, among others, are reboxed by many companies and cost little money.

     

    By the way, no one is saying that the price should drop immediately after the mould pays for itself. We are talking about old Italeri and ESCI kits here, so this is not that case at all. If a model is decades old and has already aged, it's really hard to justify a price comparable to a modern newly tooled kit.

     

    In Sweden I've seen prices for the Revell P-51D higher than for an Airfix or Tamiya P-51D... :(

    Of course Italeri has to take into account the rising prices of raw materials, energy and so on, but all the old moulds have long since paid for themselves.     ...look at the Revell 1/72 scale P-51D Mustang. They are still fooling people with this "stonage kit" that is far from good and priced as a modern kit. And they must sell a lot of them as it can be seen everywhere...

    We know the Victor is being reissued, but they've already got just about every variant possible out of that without retooling a significant proportion of the kit. It's unlikely, but I'd like to see an early Victor B.Mk.2.

     

    I'd not be surprised to see a 1/72 trop variant Bf109E reissued and a reissue of the Spitfire Mk.i early/Mk.iia/Mk.Va in the same scale

     

    Maybe a regular Spitfire Vc without the big tropical filter

     

     

     

    There is still not an 1/72 scale Airfix Spit with Douglas Bader decals...
