I guess an  A-12 would be out of the question (I am aware there are notable differences).

Actually, the  disappointing thing  (for me) about the Revell kit is the choice of scale.

I would prefer to have seen it in the one true (1/72) scale!

    However......! 😉

    John

Um... how many SR-71 kits in 1/72?

    Academy?

    Hasegawa?

    Testors/Italeri?

    Monogram/Revell?

How many SR-71 kits in 1/48?

    Testors/Italeri

I'm sure there's room for another, shinier, 1/72 kit but lets at least allow just a second quarter scale kit to creep out of the stable doors first...? Hmmm...? 😉

Thanks for the useful info., I was undecided about this one (like you already having the Hasegawa one) but may well go ahead and get one now.

Just to confirm, the Hasegawa kit I have is the two-seat F/A-18F, rather than the 'E'. I bought the Meng kit since I didn't already have an E and just took a punt on it being at least as good as the Hasegawa version would be. Glad I did now.

  3. Although it's been a long old time I did design a set of custom etch for two models. One set was for a Space 1999 Eagle Transporter that included foldable parts to support more detailed landing gear along with features to enable the command module to attach to the main body. I designed the parts using Adobe Illustrator with the folding lines highlighted in red. When the file was sent for printing the red areas would be 'half-etched' in much the way that detail would be added and this supported the fold. The thickness of the metal (whether brass or nickel) was also a bit trial and error. I also designed and printed a complete set of etch to replace the entire superstructure framework on the old MPC Black Hole USS Cygnus. Now 'that' was expensive! The company I used was the 4D Model Shop based in Whitechapel in London who support a lot of bespoke workings including photo-etch and resin casting and they did a fantastic job in helping me turn my initial plans into useable parts.

First testshots late April. I hope they will not be published as ts1 always gives room for bad and evil rumoring. It is different with later testshots or test builds.

Can't argue with that. If they do want to share then I'll be happy with a long-to-medium shot that will at least hopefully just show a correct overall shape and disposition. That'll do me until the release announcement, or unless I learn to code some sort of news filter that can tune out the kind of 'accuracy bun-fight' that can often accompany such pictures, from the genuine manufacturer updates

    Three points:

    1) About time - it will be well received by out modelling community.

    2) The standard bomber versions really are not my bag, but, should a grand slam       version come along......I’ll be on it like a rash.

    3) I’ve been loving H.K ‘s 1/32 Do335 series one of these is on a long term build, so let’s hope they down size these in the future.

    Stay safe 😉

    For me...

    1) It's a new-tool 1/48 Lancaster

    2) It's a new-tool 1/48 Lancaster

    3) It's a new-tool 1/48 Lancaster

My eye's, hands and mind might not allow for a Grand Slam or Upkeep if and by the time they are released but if they can get the above kit into my hands in the next few months I'll be happy to build one with a loadout of circus clowns.

Mine came yesterday too - have to say it looks stunning - a very good overall package including a good range of markings. The weaponry looks very good as well - single piece AMRAAMs for example. The wheel Wells are one of the best that I have seen.

    Will

    I have to agree!

I've done as detailed an inspection as my eye's will allow me without breaking the bags and this has included a lot of 'side-by-side' with a Hasegawa (Foxtrot) kit. The Meng kit has a matte surface - not the 'pebbly' of some manufacturers but much smoother and finer and quite close to Tamiya's recent F-14 IMO. In terms of actual detail there are huge similarities to the Hasegawa. In some cases the scale and depth of the panel lines appear much the same. In other cases they are slightly deeper for the Meng, in others, they are slightly deeper for the Hasegawa. The rivets are fairly similar in size and general disposition but again, with some differences - more spaced out on the Hasegawa running up to the cockpit, closer together for the Meng. Being neither a counter nor a measurer of such, both look ok to me for what is a scale model after all.

Beyond the roughly comparable (to me at least) detail, there are a number of nice features that come with the Meng kit that have helped take it up a notch for me. The obvious one is the inclusion of weapons including more modern sets like the AIM-9X and the AIM-120 and they seem to be very well engineered too. Then there are the 'plugs' that were highlighted at the point of the kit's announcement last year, allowing the modeler the flexibility to swap out the load and change their display without more drastic action. Unlike the Hasegawa kit I like the inclusion of a separate Radome since this will allow me the option of adding a 3D printed AESA Radar if I wish. I also really like their approach to the wing fold options that give me a few possible ideas on how to tackle this matter. While I know the idea may seem like heresy to some I've always preferred to have kits where the bits that fold in real life are able to do a similar job at scale. A lot of this is because I like to have the option to show off 'everything' when the fancy takes me or the model in-flight if my mood for such suddenly arrives. But much more of this desire stems from the pain of having damaged kits on display and mostly due to the fact that not even the best packing solutions have been able to offer sufficient protection during travel (my 1/48 Tornado F-2 Prototype is now sadly more parts than kit :(). Wing-folds are one such area and while I have had to design in 3D a prototype mechanism to support my F-4's the simple 'plug' provided by Meng for the Superbug will I believe make it possible to have the best of both worlds. My 'simple' idea would be to have magnets in each of the plug tabs (for both the folded and the flat) and a corresponding magnet that goes flush into the inner wing part. Then, remove the slots on the inner wings designed to keep the plug in place and whether flat or folded version is desired simply slide the plug into the wing and then the wing tip onto the exposed part. Something for me to think about!

I won't be using the kit decals other than for stencils and weapons, since I've been wanting to build the colourful VX-9 Vampire since acquiring the Fightertown set a while back, but the small PE set is a welcome addition and best of all are the pre-cut masks that come with the kit. These appear really nicely done and will help save a little in respect to aftermarket. The only real AM I would consider getting would be a Quinta Cockpit set if they (fingers crossed) resize their Hasegawa set the fit the Meng kit. Overall I am really happy with this kit. If Meng decide to go for the Foxtrot and Growler kits it would ne nice if they think about going a little further and adding a few parts that make up the Advanced Super Hornet such as the conformal fuel tanks and bays. Ah who knows!

The Lanc was announced some 18hrs ago
    www.facebook.com/HKmmodels

I know the Lanc was announced 18 hours ago, but given that what has been shared so far is much the same that was shared several months back about the B-17F - a few CADs and a box shot - but with no plastic and certainly no clear release schedule as yet, given the gap in time between the announcement of the two kits its hard to see the Lanc arriving anytime soon. Unless HK are very busy in the background getting both kits ready for quick and consecutive releases? Possible I guess.

I'm generally the kind of person that likes a 'surprise drop release' - a kit suddenly dropped into circulation with little or even no 'lead-up fanfare', such as with the Meng 1/48 F/A-18E rather than one that suffers from 'geologic reveal' (first CADs then more CADs then even more CADs then some bits then more bits and on and on and... oh, am I suddenly 3 years older?).

Part of is also impatience. I've always liked the Lanc since building the Novo kits as a young kid at the beginning of the 80's and always wanted to make a real piece of art at 1/48, or at least as much as my skills will allow, and when HK announced their re-scaled B-17 I held huge hope they would follow suit with the Lanc. At the same time and for a combination of fairly complex reasons (including, but not limited to an eye condition) my actual ability to build modes has unfortunately started to decline (also the reason I have so many partly-progressed kits on the 'work-bench' rather than completed builds ready to share here 😢) and so there are a few subjects (the Lanc being one, the HK Memphis Belle being another) that I am really hoping will 'land' while I am still capable enough to build them and do so to a level that I will feel happy with.

Tape head cleaning fluid?  Does anyone have that anymore?

Oh man! That's just brought back a tidal wave of nostalgia. That 'fake' cassette with the cotton like pads for scraping the tape head. That's two throw backs I've had today.

On a serious note though, I've had some good results with plain old washing up liquid. I've simply smeared the part with liquid, left it for 5-10 mins, then rinsed under warm (not too hot) water and then dabbed away the larger water beads before leaving to dry on some paper towel.

  9. In fact I just found a special seat mount that lets your seat simulate the bumps, roll, pressures etc of car driving and flight. If you can spare the £2700 for it at least.

And if you’re going that far you have to buy the Kenny Loggins CD 😜

    Thanks.  I still function. BTW,

next  month Hobbyboss will release a F-18E in 1/48th scale.

I  Looking forward to see how it stacks up against the MENG kit.

I just did a quick side by side with some of the parts from my Hasegawa F/A-18E and the detail looks on par but with the Meng having some nicer features in terms of stores and flexibility. The Meng pilot is slightly larger and the seat a little better though I tend to replace these with an AM cockpit anyway. What sticks out for me so far is the approach towards the folding wings. It uses ‘plugs’ to represent either the folded or fixed version and it ‘might’ (if modified) offer the ability to switch between modes.

....  the sad news is once you've gone VR, there is no going back.

Just an insatiable appetite for better and better headsets and an unfulfilled desire

to flick those switches and press those buttons with your finger !   :)

Well... on the button and switch issue there are always haptic gloves! Then add a force feedback joystick. And seat that can simulate sudden drops and shifts.

Then all you need is a sick bag 😊

I,m sorry to hear that you have this condition.  I was unaware.

For somebody who has lossed most of his sight in his right eye,  I sympathise.

Sorry to hear that mate. That’s really bad. Mine just hurt a lot especially in artificial light and occasionally lead to corneal ulcers. And they’ve limited my detail work but the rest of the vision is ok. Sorry to hear about yours though.

  13. 40 years Mike! 40! A 4 'and' a 0. So what happened to all of the years between? I feel like I've just opened the front door to this.

    "...[ding dong]..."

"Hello? How can I help you?"

"Hi, did you know that it's '40' years since the Empire Strikes Back?"

"40 what? Eh? Hang on.... [...." Mavis!! Where have my 40 years gone...?"...]

This episode was brought to you by "Oh my god it's 40 years since the Empire Strikes Back and I haven't even 'started' on my Bandai PG Falcon yet".

  14. Last night I flew the F-14A from Heatblur's DCS World simulation in VR using an HTC Vive Cosmos.

I also flew a Cessna 152 in MS Flight Sim 2020 in VR. My mind is officially blown and is likely to be in recovery mode for the rest of the week.

Might see if I can try a little UK flying in VR world.
