    1996 Lotus Esprit V8 (Monogram Conversion)

    Indeed with more reliability and better durability the V8 would have been a great car, but three complete breakdowns (fuel pump, lost clutch fluid, exploded gearbox) on a brand new car were not acceptable. Finally, when Lotus was not only unable to supply a new transmission or respective spare parts, but couldn't even say when or if they would be able to supply such parts I was fed up. My most impreessive Lotus experience happened on a fortunately straight and less-travelled Autobahn at more than 250 kph: When opening the retractable headlights the flimsy front-hinged lid burst open and remaining open at an angle of about 45° it concealed everything but the blue sky. Very funny ...
  3. Hi, Though the Ferrari 250 LM was the mid-engine successor of the often kitted 250 GTO there were only two 1/24 styrene kits of the Ferrari 250 LM. The first was a terrible Esci kit. The second kit was made by Sunny/Academy/Minicraft. It was released more than 30 years ago and has been reissued several times. Only few modelers seem to be happy with the Sunny/Academy/Minicraft kit. I built my model maybe 20 years ago, and I found it not that bad, particularly considering its low price. Achieving a presentable model, however, requires some extra work. I remember the following major problems: All panel lines are not very deep and not clearly defined, i. e. the panel lines do not have sharp (90°) edges. Instead the edges are strikingly round. By this the panel lines look very wide, and their width seems to vary. This would spoil any finished model. As a remedy I scribed all panel lines considerably deeper and sanded the body until all edges looked satisfactory. All grilles are molded plastic. The front grille is acceptable because it is recessed and because it is black on the 1:1 car. The 3 molded-in rear grilles, however, are flush and painted in body colour on the 1:1 car. Since I found no way to make them look realistic I replaced them by segments of a generic PE fret. The interior is quite simple and needs some detailing. The plastic “wire” wheels of the kit are really crude. Since the 1:1 car has strikingly different wheel sizes front and rear the model wheels attract the attention even more than usual. Using PE wire wheels will be a bad and expensive compromise if this specific feature of the car is not replicated. The web shows examples where wrong rim/tyre sizes make good models look odd. As always I made my own wires, so I didn‘t have to compromise. Provided that you tackle its shortcomings the kit can make an interesting and attractive model particularly as one of the few street legal LMs. For me it became one of my favourite Ferrari models.

    Very realistic! As far as I remember burgundy/black was the most popular Charleston colour combination by far here in Germany.

    Beautiful execution, great decal design. Compared to ICM's excellent Opel Admiral and Mercedes G4, however, the kit itself seems to be rather simple.

    One of those kits that are not my cup of tea. Nevertheless the model shows excellent craftmanship, particularly considering the age of the kit.
  10. Hi, Though the Auburn Speedster is one of the really iconic cars of automotive history there was never any usable styrene kit. The 1:1 Speedster looked like this (for those who are not sure): Wire wheels were optional, to my knowledge lateral wind deflectors as seen here were neither standard nor optional. Whatever you hear about the 1/25 Lindberg (former Pyro) kit don't believe it - everything is much worse. All kit parts are crude and mostly out of scale. Fit is disastrous. Panel lines are still raised. A lot of important parts aren't replicated at all. Worst of all OOB the finished kit is so ludicrously ill-proportioned that it looks rather like a caricature: After 60 years of modeling and several hundred built kits I think this is the poorest kit I have ever seen. Lindberg's claim on the box "Authentic Scale Model" is a joke even if you consider the age of the kit - many other manufacturers' kits of the same era are still usable. After comparing the box content with an excellent scale drawing found on the web it was clear from the start that this would be a most challenging and very time-consuming project. As expected I had to convert almost every spot of the nine-piece body: All the rest of the kit was completely useless because it was so poor and so incorrect that it couldn't even be modified. Finally the finished model was half conversion and half scratch build, and my sacrifice of time exceeded 900 hours. Since the proportions are now completely different some more pictures than usual in my topics may make sense.

    Tamiya Caterham Super Seven

    Excellent kit, excellent work! Brings back memories of my early days when I owned this Seven from 1984 to 1990. I remember very well when I collected it at the premises still in Caterham, a southern suburb of London. All in all to this day it is still the most entertaining car I ever had.
  12. VERY clean work, particularly considering the small scale ( 1/48? ) and the age of the kit ( I suppose first released in the early sixties). I remember Revell offered a very similar kit in the same scale, namely a nice White COE with Shell tanker trailer.

    Thanks for the replies! Indeed, but on the other hand because German street letter boxes are yellow I always had to close the side windows completely when parking the car.
  14. Thanks for the recent comments! No, I am sorry, as mentioned in the LP 333 thread I take no WIP pictures or WIP notes (with only very few exceptions). While building I perceive it as very disruptive. BTW I have restored the picture links in post # 13.
