Space Battleship Yamato General Thread

Here's a few detail shots, from what I can tell most of those hatches and panel lines aren't on the kit itself, so plenty of justification to detail the big girl up and make it more screen accurate -

Yeah, I was going to use it as a WIP for my Domelaze but I got impatient and did the whole thing in one go Which I suppose is a tribute to its ease of construction! It's more of a general resource and conversation topic now, you are right. I do still hold out hope for a 1/1000 flagship, its just too awesome of a design to let sit in a corner. And a couple more 1/72 aircraft please -

Yeah, saw it elsewhere, got really excited, then my hopes were crushed But Everyone said the Domelaze would never be released and eventually it was, this Command Dreadnought is the only ship from the series left to be modelled. I'm hopeful -

Now that'll do nicely It should be smaller than the Domelaze Dreadnought, but it looks quite a bit bulkier. Though the one in the pic is a Scratch build, very nice one though -

Good friend of mine picked up the books last year (The first I've heard of it) and has offered to rustle up a few scans, though apparently the warship stuff is mostly basic schematics and the bridge interiors. I mentioned the Domelaze so we'll see what shows up -

Those are indeed the books When I was checking last time I was told Amazon Japan only deliver to that country, but if they do international shipping I may have found what that crimbo money is going on Much appreciated, these are very high on my must have list, right up there with a Figma Saber and a Master Grade Geara Zulu (When they hurry up and release one!) -

There is an art book out there with detailed sketches of everything in the show, but its like a Holy Grail, they sold out overnight unless they do another run it'll be hard to find one. As a sample... it'd just be the perfect resource for hyper detailing Sadly in the absence of such a book most of the online images don't show anything that isn't already on the model itself. I can rustle up some screenshots of any close ups but I don't think there will be many. Most of the time the ship was cruising majestically centre screen or being menacing The books were called 'Material Books' and there is one for Earth and one for the Garmilas if you wanted to take a shot, best of luck if you do -

One of my favourite things about the 2199 show is how they have added detail to the various ships, most of the time they look plain due to I guess the limitations of animation budgets. But every so often you get a close up and you can pick out panel lines, warning labels, different layers of material etc. It really jumps out compared to the long shots. So you are only doing what the animators themselves are doing I mean this is an official production sketch You can see the sheer level of detail that you simply can't animate every time, but it is meant to be there -

As an aside HLJ has the Core ship at more than half off. While I'm not a massive fan of it, hard to refuse at that price if anyone had a gap in the collection to fill And the UN Fleet too, perfect timing Also... -

I can only locate the green ones, and typically out of stock http://www.hlj.com/product/BAN973118/Gun or a bit pricey http://www.amazon.co.uk/Gunpla-LED-Unit-pieces-Green/dp/B005L9ZUBY -

The LED sold seperately I'm afraid, seen a few Gundam builds that use them and they seem to be a standardised fit for the newer Bandai kits. About a fiver for a self contained set of two There is an upgrade set available out there for the air wing and extendable wings, some PE too but thats a bit harder to locate http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10267328 -

Very true, they all have naval ship type bridges, lots of fins, pods, poles and other assorted gear, plus using a flat top to launch and recover space fighters In universe there may be a possible explanation in all humanoid races apparently evolved from a single progenitor species, so they all have 99% the same DNA, similar cultures, fairly similar tech and physics. They make it a plot point in the show to explain how everyone looks the same apart from being blue or green or whatever On the other hand all the ships were done by the same guy and he probably really, really liked fins and intakes Same with the other ships he made like the Arcadia from Harlock. These 2199 versions have been heavily detailed up, lot more gizmos and panels, but overall shape is same as the 70s with all the flaws that brings -

Yeah, that landing craft is 1/1000, shouldn't be a problem If I recall the Darold base was part of a space station? some guns and greeblies? Maybe you can expand on it? add a few more tiles of greeblies? I'm thinking of an asteroid field base and just add and subtract rocks to change the scale of the display. Perhaps the same applies to the space station segments? Bit like how they built the Deathstar trench for the SW films. -

The CGI Harlock is pretty nifty, bears absolutely no relation to any of the Harlock TV series but as a stand alone film works nicely. Certainly doesn't short change you on the battle scenes It's nice they've updated the female characters in Yamato but there is definitely what can generously be called 'fanservice' in there Those spray on uniforms are a bit much, especially as the early episodes showed us Regular uniforms were much more tasteful and practical. I assume they are appealing to the young male demographic with a bit of animated totty, but at least the girls in this series aren't the usual damsels in distress. Yamamoto especially. It's progress, but still could do more and not a patch on the female leads in shows like Fate or Attack on Titan -

Yeah, the robot and the Doc are a throw back to the 70s which was a lot less grounded, ditto the sound effects. They've definitely added a lot more gravitas as you'd expect in a mission to save the world, and the tech and ship designs also seem a lot more grounded, they even explained why the Yamato looks like the WWII version when the other Earth ships are a lot more sci fi. A remake done right, they kept the spirit of the original and the strong elements, but ditched a lot of the silly stuff and added more characters and background, especially among the enemy. Worked out good, roll on the second series -

Never had a go at a group build either so new experience for me too Looks fun though, good incentive to try something a bit ambitious and different I do like the Battlecarrier a lot, and I've done one before so no surprises. Maybe a couple of destroyer escorts too, make a scene of it -

Best of luck with the Dreadnought mate, it's a hell of a blank canvas for a master like yourself I might take a crack at a splinter camo Battlecarrier from the new film, might just be my favourite design from the series -

There have been I think on the order of 7 basic designs for the Yamato over the years Original from 1974 Slight update for the sequels A far future Yamato 2525 design by Syd Mead A redesign in the 90s for the Yamato Video games The 2009 'Rebirth' Movie version The 2010 Live movie version The 2199 version Each one of those has a kit available, several in some instances, apart from the movie versions. The 1/350 for instance is based on the Video game design which has plenty of detail but looks a bit lumpy for my taste The 2199 version is the best, a much more lean and tidy design with plenty of detail. The 1/500 2010 version is the same basic design of the show but scaled to the length of the original Yamato (250 metres or so) While the more recent version is scaled to what we see on screen (About 330 metres) Accounting for the differences in size. They are definitely engineered for simplicity to presumably appeal to a wide market, one of those things thats easy to do but still has scope to be a real showstopper -

I definitely want to see the two main enemy fighters, love the red one that looks like a space Me-262 I have seen images of a 1/72 version of both that and the Stuka-esque dive bomber which are said to be prototypes for production kits, but at the moment I think Bandai are concentrating on kits for the new film that just came out. Hopefully in the future -

I have a bit of a build thread going on here... http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234967497-space-battleship-yamato-general-thread/ with some bad pics of a bunch of 1/1000 ships and the old 1/500 There seem to be two waves of available kits, a lot are re-pops from the original 70s series run, these kits are very cheap but also pretty much what you'd expect from forty year old moulding. They can look good but the newer 2199 series kits are greatly superior HLJ had the 1/1000 2199 Yamato at I think £16 last I checked, though its another £6-7 for shipping. That said its a lot of plastic for £25 or so quid I'm pretty average at building but Madhatter has done a couple of 2199 kits that turned out like film props Edit- Bit of my 1/1000 selection -

No model Seagull I'm afraid, though there is great demand for it so it might happen So far the only 1/72 kits are the two Earth fighter designs. For the ship herself, they just released a new 1/1000 scale version this week which is the same basic kit as the previous 1/1000 but with some extra bits and accessories. There are two 1/500 versions out there too, one from about a year ago which is a massive and extremely detailed kit, and a somewhat simpler version from 2010. I'd probably say go for the 1/1000, lot of tiny fiddly bits but its a reasonable size and nicely detailed. If you can find the older 1/500 its a fine kit too and probably not so much in demand since the newer version came out. Plus there's a huge number of enemy warships too -
