    Day 45 roundup!

Just a quick one today, as I'm hell-bent on getting some bench time tonight.

There was me all pleased with myself for my painstaking update of the Behemothic Build List, when in fact it was all over the place. I've now correctly linked the blue finished builds to their gallery pictures, and apologies to @PeterB and @stevej60 for somehow omitting their Prowler and Ocean Hawk/Sea Hawk double build, respectively.

Today's new gallery star is @RC Boater Bill's lovely little Sopwith Pup. And please welcome along @Paul821 with his Higgins landing craft.

As at today we are at:

    187 builds*

    127 underway

    32 finished

    1 sunk

    * compare and contrast with 92 WIPs when the GB opened on 7th January!

@TonyOD you still have my Saratoga build listed as PeterB's 😭

  2. So frustrating when that happens. Thankfully my house has tiled floors so usually a sweep will show up the rogue piece.

I think just warm a sprue above a candle and when soft pull until the diameter you want. Then chop it a bit longer than you need, heat it again and make a blobby end bit and even sculpt it slightly with a hobby knife. It might take a few goes to get right but I'm sure it'll be good enough that no one will notice.

    (Except us of course!)

Either that or.... just leave it off completely. In this scale it will be hard to notice it's missing.

do like the Navy Blue scheme on the right ship,

Thanks Alan. I was sceptical at first and wanted a grey ship, but now it's painted I think it looks great. I honestly had no idea that ships in WWII were painted blue! And Navy Blue of all blues. Who'd have thunk it? :drunk:

  4. @PeterB I won't be ordering any online for this GB but I'll definitely be buying a range of aircraft like you have once I visit a bricks and mortar store that has them.

I used Gunze C322 Phtanocyanate Blue for the vertical surfaces, then toned it down with some white. It turned out a similar colour to the flight deck but enough of a contrast that I'm happy with it.

Decals did give me grief. Too long in water they'd break. Not long enough, they'd break. Even cutting into small sections it was extremely difficult to get the lines perfectly straight and undamaged. Mostly I think I need planes now just to cover the lines.

I painted the planes with X3 Tamiya royal blue which looks great.

A lot of brushwork and weathering to do now but it's at a point it could go into the gallery in a pinch if it needed to!

Feels great to build something different for a change and I'm looking forward to building a few more of these at some stage with crazy photoetch and all!

good starting point for a newb

It is. Relatively easy, if you have some previous modelling experience. Only thing I wish it came with more aircraft!

If I ever see the USS Hornet with all the B-25s for the Doolitle Raid I'll certainly be picking that one up too.

  6. Painting Day!

The usual Mr Surfacer 1000 (when I can get it!) and Nazca retarder thinner.

    52695012737_1ff047770a_z.jpg

Then a little pre-shade in Tamiya flat black for some variation in further coats.

    52695791709_8c0b1dac9e_z.jpg

And finally the deck colour Tamiya XF-15 medium blue plus some addition of white for colour variation. It is not the exact colour mentioned in instructions but I think at 1/700 scale the boat could appear almost any shade depending on the light. I would not have minded if this was the final colour of the vertical surfaces but it will be quite a bit darker. Definitely overdue for a new airbrush though. As soon as I started with this coat it started playing up. Some spatter will have to be hidden under some weathering.

Gloss coat is on also so I can decal the deck but decals look not the best! 😬

Will mask the deck and hopefully paint vertical surfaces this afternoon.

    Hi Arthur,

According to this site - https://www.shipcamouflage.com/usn_cv.htm - with the late war fit you have a choice of a rather complicated splinter or the blue Measure 21 scheme but at the end of the day it is your kit so paint it however you want.

    Pete

Thanks for the reference. Actually that blue looks quite nice if it's lightened and weathered. I was picturing something much darker.

Looks like a legit oil stain to me - those big radial probably dripped a lot of oil right?

Exactly my thought. Plane with a stain!

  8. Sorry did I say before that this was fun?

This was a lot of cross eyed effort to make all these little guns and life raft assemblies!

But once they were done it was very satisfying putting them all in place and finishing everything else off. Wow this thing is really bristling with guns!

I used some stretched sprue and artistic license to put some rigging and aerials here and there. They haven't all shown up in the photo. Unfortunately I did get two fat drops of Tamiya extra thin on the deck but I'll try hide it under an aircraft.

And I am now at the painting stage! I don't love the dark blue scheme given in the box, and the dazzle camouflage is just a little more than I can bring myself to do right now. (Not to mention that I'll break every gun if I try masking everything.) I guess some sort of all over grey is also suitable but I don't know if it would be accurate for this depiction of the ship. I'll probably end up doing blue as if and when I build other boats they are likely to be grey!

  9. Had a little free time tonight so kept plugging away. There's some really small parts in this! I'm sure similarly sized parts on some of my aircraft kits never made it off the sprues but here it is key to the overall look of the beast.

Of course once the tower and funnel were on I couldn't resist taking the little helldivers and hellcats off and placing them on deck. (Cue propeller and taxing sounds)

Parents in town this week with good jet lag and I have the week off work so hopefully I'll get evenings to work on this.

  10. Well,  I couldn't stand to sit by and watch all the salty fun without taking part. My (real life) schedule is a little too full to attempt the 1/72 B-24 Coastal Command but this one has been sitting in my stash a long time. I believe my in laws gave me this for my birthday many years ago. So @TonyOD may I climb aboard cap'n?

Ships are definitely outside my comfort zone but I'll try anything once ...

    52671151635_02659c330e_z.jpg

    And obligatory sprue shots.

    Oh this is fun...

    52671009004_0148c4a861_z.jpg

And in a couple of hours or less... I have a flight deck AND a hull. (See, I've been learning nautical terms too)

I know progress will slow down now with all the detailed parts but the kit seems to really be fantastic. Everything just fitting into place like usual Tamiya style.
