  1. Hi all

I'm going to build a BIG Trumpeter 1/32 Lightning F1A for a friend. They want it displayed gear up in an "action" flying mode (zoom climb?).

I'm thinking of using the kind of stand that has rod(s) curving from a base and locating inside the jet pipes. Internet searches have not produced such a thing "off the shelf".

Any suggestions as to how to go about this? Especially regarding securing the model to the rods and the size/weight required.

Any advice would be very gratefully received.

  2. Thanks for all your kind comments, much appreciated!

The big "Viggie" has moved to the display case, I'm not sure it will make it's way back to the workbench......I think I've been there, done that, got the T-shirt...... ;-)

    6ff5c2c13f50db872f8eb0c7d3e17e5b.jpg

It surely dwarfs the "Scooter".......no wonder the carrier ground handlers hated it (after the Skywarrior).

  3. It looks good from here! Nice build, I know what you mean about losing your enthusiasm towards the end. Your Viggie looks good but (I think) would look superb with a little weathering, maybe if you revisit her in a few months and add a little you could show her again.

    You're right I'm sure.......maybe it will happen.......

    Thanks for your kind comment.

  4. That is great work and a jet I have a fondness for after building the Airfix kit in the same markings last century! It was one kit on my buying list but I had no idea that building it was such a trial! Ah well, your perseverance has paid off, it looks every inch the part!!

If you can find one, go for it!

It's a big beautiful kit of a fantastic (and much underrated) aeroplane I think.

Perseverance will yield results but TBH I was so stretched by it that by the end I just wanted it finished. Anyone with more patience than myself could achieve a stunning result I think.

  5. This was my first Trumpeter kit and I had heard that it had some fit problems. It lived up to it's reputation and tested my skills to breaking point. So much so that I confess I lost some enthusiasm towards the end and finished it without any weathering and maybe in a rush.....

I knew that the fuse halves had fit problems and bought the Nautilus Models balsa brace system from the states. This fitted brilliantly and made what would have been very difficult much easier although I still didn't manage to get the fit exactly right and some filling and sanding was needed. I also used an Eduard zoom cockpit set. Unfortunately having fitted the ejector seat mask loops both subsequently got lost to the carpet monster. I didn't use the originals as they are so wildly out of scale (like wheelbarrow handles) so ended up with none, but the "Zoom" kit detail and colour was great and having used several now is good value I think

The intakes didn't want to fit at all and required quite a lot of fettling. I modified the flaps and slats from the kit down position to allow them to be up as this is how these aircraft were always parked.

The jet pipe surround didn't fit either and again much Tamiya filler and sanding was employed.

Net research showed that standard load for these aircraft was one flash pod, not ordnance, but the kit item didn't look like any reference pictures, I assumed it had a ground guard over the generator propellers and painted it accordingly.

c99728e059866776977835615bb3e433.jpgI tried to use the kit decals but of the first two applied one broke up into several pieces and the other folded into a tangle. I gave up on these and found this great pale blue scheme from Superscale for RVAH-14 USS Independence 1974 which I love.

Whilst polishing the front cockpit I managed to split in in two halves.......so had to repair it as best I could. The rear cockpit partially split and I have no idea how! I opted to fit the canopies open (not a kit option) so that the great Eduard cockpit detail set could be seen.

One positive was that following a magazine article I bought Tamiya weathering master pastels for the jet nozzles which produced fantastic results first time out. Previously I have really struggled with getting a representation of these, no longer I feel :-)

In summary this was without doubt the most difficult kit I have attempted to date. I have no doubt some of the problems were down to my lack of skill but I think it safe to say that this kit does have some serious fit issues. Having said that I think that it has produced a great representation of this ground breaking supersonic carrier jet and I am please with the end result.

I hope you like it too.

I started airbrushing a year ago with an H&S Evolution Silverline 2in1, it's a fab piece of kit and beautifully engineered. I'm sure it would do everything that you want for quite some time. The advantage of the Evo is that it is expandable over time with the full range of H&S options (which the Ultra isn't), so the brush can grow with your skill.

I'd fully reccomend buying one, but would certainly get the .2 and .4 combo in the 2in1 kit initially.

  7. Hi Wally

    Nice work!

It's great to see an example of my eponymous aircraft here on Britmodeller. I spent seven years working on Doves and Devons amongst other types at Devonair at Kemble some time ago. They were (then) cheap to buy but the maintenance costs were eye-watering. Still, we had some fun! I think DH's motto was why use a stiff nut/locknut when you can use a castellated nut and spilt pin instead......overall they were not the easiest aircraft to work on but it was rewarding when they went out onto the apron and you fired them up. The cockpit was particularly cramped for such a large aeroplane.

The "executive" versions had a lovely interior fit with huge leather armchair seats right down to de Havilland engraved salt and pepper pots!

We had JC Bamfords (JCB) company plane used for promotional sales tours around the world tho in non flying condition, also the former National Coal Board aircraft (those were the days) as well as our own flying example (G-ARBE)

    http://www.caa.co.uk/applicationmodules/ginfo/ginfo_photo.aspx?regmark=G-ARBE&imgname=G-ARBE002&imgtype=jpg

and we serviced, repaired and overhauled various examples from around Europe.

    Happy Days!

  8. Thanks everyone for all that info and pics.

    Here's the Trumpeter offering.....

    cb56fdd7daa0377ebf0dbb82fea48848.jpg

It's very different at the rear from those pictured, kinda like a torpedo with the prop faired in, except there's no prop!

Time for some modification I think.....

    TonyS

  9. Thanks Giorgio

I didn't realise that the rear end was a power turbine which powered the electric flash system.

Do you know who made it and the part number? I cannot find any pics or info on the net. If nothing else I'll just paint it white, but I'm sure there must be some detailing t be added on it.

  10. Hi All

I'm making progress with my Trumpeter 1/48 Vigilante and will be using just one underwing store, the photo flash pod under the port wing. I do not know it's manufacturer nor part number.

I have been unable to find any references to the colour scheme of this, nor pictures. It seems unlikely that it was all plain white? Or maybe it is?

    Can anyone help please?

BTW this is a challenging kit to build but it's shaping up to be a fantastic end result.

    Thanks in advance

    TonyS

  11. Apart from the aforementioned cockpit framing, you've done a lovely job on this. I built exactly the same model with exactly the same markings and did exactly the same with the intake warning decals as you did! Spooky.

Did you also have the same experience I had - found the tiny extra decal sheet in the bottom of the box, looked at the 3EK marking you'd already put on the starboard wing, and thought "Awww no..." ? :banghead:

    Nice finish,

    Dean

    Dean

    Funny you should mention that.....

I learnt another lesson here......always look through the promotional material in the bottom of the box so you can find the small Errata decal sheet...... OOOOPS,

    Here's some more pics

I agree, it's a bit spooky, we seem to have followed the same path.

In any event, this was one of the best kits I've built since my return to modelling, such a great fit. Shame that I can't find much more from Tamiya in 1/48 Cold War US Navy planes, which I have chosen as my subject.

Thank you to you all for your most kind comments, they really are much appreciated and encourage me to move forward. I'm even thinking of doing a first WIP on my just started next project the much criticised but lovely Trumpeter 1/48 RA-5C Vigilante.....any thoughts?

    Bets regards

  12. Very neat and realistic looking Skyray, thanks to your smooth finish and restrained weathering. The Skyray is one of my favourite US planes, courtesy of that flowing but still purposeful design.

The cockpit framing would have benefitted from being masked or applied using prepainted decal strips, though, don't you think?

    Nice work over all!

    Kind regards,

    Joachim

    Hi Joachim

    You may well be right.

Unfortunately the camera is better than my eyes! I primed and glossed by hand and then used a cocktail stick to cut errors back to the frames. On this kit the frame lines are a little indistinct and I gave it my best shot given my patience available!

TBH I think cockpit masks are a bit expensive?

I'll try to I improve next time!

  13. Hi all,,those of you who looked at my last build may have been expecting the mighty Trumpeter 1/48 Skywarrior. Unfortunately having attempted to dry fit the fuselage halves around the sub assemblies both were founds to be warped. The port fuse both warped and bent to the value of over 3/8 inch over it's length. I am currently in contact with the importers to try to source replacements, but I think it may be a lengthy process. So I put that on one side and started this beauty......

    14f92b6bc9e38ed16e1db93bb20637ae.jpg

This is the first Tamiya kit I have ever built.....(I know, I can't believe it either) and I see why people rate them, it went together perfectly, every piece slotting into it's allotted place, what a joy!

The only problem I encountered was I was unable to make the large, complex one piece engine nacelle intake warning decals conform around the intakes, it was just asking too much. So I hand painted the red around the nacelles and then cut the DANGER decals and added them.

    4fbe5672cd985565c4324cacd143a470.jpg

As per my preferred technique, panel lines pre drawn with pens and post shading with dry pastels for a not very weathered effect!

    abb98006b4170d2a9ad89b182ccf6d29.jpg

I resisted the temptation to do the popular blue with yellow stars VF(Aw-3) scheme and instead went for the "death dealers" VMF(AW)-114 Marines scheme, here's the original....

I hope you like this one as much as I enjoyed building it.

There's loads more fantastic stuff on that site if you look around, believe me it's worth it!

Being a glutton for punishment I've started the Trumpy 1/48 RA-5C Vigilante this afternoon........wish me luck.

    Best wishes
