1/48 - DH.103 Hornet F.1/.3 by Trumpeter - F.1 released - F.3 released
Bravo52 replied to Homebee's topic in The Rumourmonger
Thank you for the pictures and description David. Those are great pictures. In the case of the FR4, it looks to be PRU blue on the bottom, however, the PR2 does not. Is that the case? Also, the PR2 looks to have had a prop strike of some sort... Thanks again. Jerry -

Does anyone have pictures of the lower nose and camera sections of the PR2 or FR4? My understanding is the guns were removed and cameras were added in the aft section of the fuse on the F1 and F3 respectively. -
Dynavector Another Hornet - this time a Vacform F.3
Bravo52 replied to Mike's topic in Work in Progress - Aircraft
Those Dynavector kits are the best vacs out there. I plan to build my remaining Gannet side-by-side with the Classic Airframes kit. I loved building the Wyvern and Skyshark. This is looking great. It sure looks like a DH hornet. -

Pretty interesting article from a kit producer regarding the "reasons" why kits aren't perfect. http://www.cybermodeler.com/special/kit_flaws.shtml Thanks for the corrected link Andy! -
Wow. Love the model. Very well done and the finish is outstanding.
-
Very nice indeed! My preference would be the Wyvern but...any would be great.
-
Beautiful model! Love the EDSG/Sky and how it highlights a great build.

Laurent, I think you are wrong… Your numbers are way too generous and I doubt those numbers are nothing more than a guess on your part. But since we are guessing, here is my guess. Trumpeter’s already made the decision to kit the model. That decision alone means they expect to cover their cost (this is a “for profit” company). The 20 -25% margin you stated isn’t even supported among the poster in this thread. It’s already been pointed out that one of the biggest critics has said he was going to buy one… While I’m not here to pick fights with anyone or point out the fallacies of their arguments, the bigger point is there is a new model of an extinct airplane coming and I for one look forward to building it. Considering the fore mentioned bonus purchase, and my two, Trumpeter is already making a bigger profit than they planned or at least you give them credit for. -

...And then Larry said; "I think it looks like a Mosquito" Well thank you Mr. Obvious. Hey, wasn't the Mosquito and Hornet made by the same company? Why would the de Havilland engineers reinvent the wheel...borrow what works for the next design and what not? I bet you look like your older sister...just say'n. At any rate, Trumpeter is marketing for profit not what the likes of any rivet-counter out there wants. There are plenty of opportunities out there to build the perfect museum quality models if you choose. Look at what Jonners did with the CA model Hornet or the absolutely stunning work done by Peter on the HpH offering. It's all about time and money. I'm not willing to spend the $250+ on the HpH kit (if I could get one) and then do all the work just to have an replica aircraft miniature sitting on my desk that I can't charge people $$ to come see. So Trumpeter is going to get my ~$45 and I'm going to get a nice looking model that I had fun building (technically ~$90 cause I'm going to buy two). That's why their "marketing" is spot on.... -

Meh...looks like a Hornet to me. Now I'm going to buy two. That said, I do find the picture above (post 102 / thanks Troy) interesting. The one showing the bottom side has the right engine shut down. The plane still appears to be performing well. To quote Eddie Izzard..."There you have it, It's all right." -

Can't wait to get my hands on this. I'm thinking PX252 for the scheme. Looks like they got the instrument panel decal right this time and the seat looks a little better (hard to tell for the glare). The detail on the control surfaces looks a little heavy but that shouldn't be a problem. Can't wait for the Sea Hornet. -

Very nicely done! Excellent job on the finish. -
I built this straight from the box using the Indian Navy markings. I love the Extra Dark Sea Gray/Sky combination and colors presented in the Indian Navy markings. The kit went together with the usual angst regarding these kits. There are several builds on BM that talk about how to approach attaching the tail and the bottom line is the kit instructions are not the preferred method. I found it better to put the main fuselage together then add the tail section one side at a time and shim along the main seam. That way the panel lines will line up. Kit needs a lot of nose weight. I used about 10 grams pushed in around the nose gear bay. More is better in this case. The rest of the kit was fine.

To borrow (nick) a British quote; "Give them the third best to go on with; the second best comes too late, the best never comes." I look forward to building the kits. -
One of my favorites! You are doing an excellent job. I look forward to more.

This is my version of Trumpeter's Westland Whirlwind. The kit assembles pretty straight forward but is sparse when it comes to decals. I went ahead and cut out the area behind the seat bulkhead and added a radio tray and a couple of instrument boxes from the spares box. It's a pretty tight fit but adds just enough detail to make it a little interesting. The decals in the kit are thick so I decided to use some others from old sheets. Had to make up plane numbers because that's all I had so the livery is fictitious. I guess the bottom line is the cockpit is green and it looks mostly like a Whirlwind.

I'm a little confused...are there factory drawings out there or not? If there are then I guess there is a foundation for the critique, however, if not, then it's all about some other dude's "T-LAR"...(that looks about right). What is the definitive source for accuracy? Pictures? Factory drawings? 3-views? Roy Sutherland's opinion? -

Very nice! You've motivated me to get mine done. I'm still working on the area behind the cockpit. I should have been finished already... -
