  1. Lovely work! Hoping to see a video of her chasing geese etc. On the Boat vs Ship thing there are lots of explanations. One is that a boat can be hoisted onto a ship, another that the function of a boat happens on its deck, the function of a ship inside the vessel. The one I always remember is that a boat heels inwards in a turn and a ship outwards. This is to do with the centre of gravity being below the freeboard of a boat and above he freeboard of a ship.
  2. Fabulous, thanks Will. Will store that tip away...
  3. How on Earth do you manage to get the glowing effect with the orange? That's magnificent!
  4. Cracking build as ever, Dan. Picking up tips for when I build my 432...
  5. I'm told that anyone aspiring to become a modeller at the Pendon Museum is invited to build a privy or shed as a test piece...
  6. Lovely model! I particularly like the insides and the bomb bay. Some tips for taking photos of completed model kits from a lecture I attended delivered by a professional in the field: Try to use natural light, but not direct or bright sunlight. Alternatively use a daylight bulb in a desk lamp. Use a tripod. Do not use flash. Set ISO as low as possible - I use ISO100. Set white balance for the conditions you're photographing in. Set aperture as small as possible (big number - I aim for f25 or thereabouts) to get most depth of field - that is to say as much as possible of the model in focus. Use a cable release or the self-timer to take the photo. Apologies if you know all this already & it's just the absence of a camera that was the issue!
  7. It's been a while. I finally decided to cut a few bits of styrene to make the 3.5's under the cage. They went like this: Blast, they're a bit small, but here's the other side: Right, let's give it a spray: Blast, will need to strip this right back!
  8. I can't quite see clearly, Dan, but I did wonder about the rubber bump strip round the back decks. I've been looking back at my reference pictures and again it's difficult to make out but ISTR that while these would get green paint on them this didn't last long and it would flake away, leaving the black to show through again. Doesn't detract from a superb build but thought I'd mention!
  9. Headlights are 3mm. Tail lights & reflectors 2mm, with reflectors mounted on 3mm discs. Hope that's of use!
  10. As Dan says I used these for my model: Think they came out OK - the IR lights have a spray of Tamiya Gloss black: I used some larger ones for the searchlight. To be honest they're a bit bulbous, but they'll do: As I said on my thread I searched for the gems at work during lunch break on eBay & they came up as ideal for nail art & vajazzling which caused soem humour
  11. Dan I really hate to say this, but is your Commander a Corporal? It's just that the panzer's callsign is 31, which in a square means the Troop Sergeant's wagon in 3rd Troop, B Squadron. We did have Staff Sergeant Troop Leaders (who would have been in X0 where X is Troop number) but X1 would still be Tp Sgt & X2 Tp Cpl. I cant remember a Corporal commanding X1, although suppose it could have been possible...
  12. I was told the following, by a Major in the RIR while at Sandhurst: How does one tell the difference between Officers of the Royal Armoured Corps? The Skins wear bottle green trousers. The Cherrypickers wear scarlet trousers. The RTR wear dirt under their fingernails
  13. Welcome aboard, Wogga. All I can say about Dan's superlative build is "spotty dog"! I'm doing a Mk10 with the Castoff set but am a bit stalled. With regard to the overhang I wonder if these would help: Sorry, thought I had a better view of the front! All the best, Matthew (former 5 INNIS DG).
  14. Fabulous as ever, Dan. I decided to do mine closed down to avoid having to do the figure work! Pity as the Castoff kit does the insides of the hatches very well. No progress for me, I'm afraid. As expected I worked flat out up to Christmas & had quite a few commitments - in between these I crashed and tried to rid myself of the bug I've been brewing since early November!
  15. I was going to say, it was only a close look at the top reference photo which showed what a cracking job you'd done of the wheels!
  16. Don't, you're bringing back memories: Mind you it was unusually dry in that picture. It was normally a lot more like this: Happy days!
  17. Thanks very much! I am afraid that I have had the couple of months from hell both at work and home. I've managed some very simple railway modelling, but have lacked confidence to get back to the panzer. However with any luck after a crucial meeting finishes at 17:30 on Monday life could return to something vaguely resembling normal. I work for a School, so while I don't get Teachers' holidays I am unlikely to be on 12 hour + days in a week so fingers crossed for more work! I'm sure there's a gag in an Army novel about how it wasn't Nero who fiddled while Rome burned, it was the QM
  18. Good dit, Ian. There was always some good banter in those days, miss it now. Luckily when I worked for a charity in Central America there were enough ex-Forces, aspirant Forces and Pad Brats to get the humour. I mistakenly tried it out in an NHS Contracting role and one or two of the permanent staff didn't speak to me for a month... I am still completely stalled. Dan has been generous with some bits and pieces to help out and I have done, but not photographed, some minor painting tasks. I really don't want him to think I'm like a bloke I helped out with some kit for a model railway who then never posted again on the site we used! Supplies of paint have arrived. I've just lost confidence and lacked time to get on. Wish me luck, birthday party season is on us again so Sunray Minor should be away some afternoons leaving me some peace to build...
  19. I'll tell you the tale of woe of why I didn't get any work done on Sunday as planned. This is almost a tale from still being in the mob. Friday night I had a Coaches' meeting at the Rugby Club. Naturally once formal proceedings and a curry supper were dealt with there was a little bit of polite conversation, networking and bonding all accompanied by the customary lubricant. I made it home at a relatively sensible hour, and refrained from singing Mother Mo Chroi as I came in. Saturday was the London Double Header at Twickenham, and as is customary Sunray drove and we met friends for a car park party. We were then due to watch the London Irish match and head back via central London for a pleasant kebab at a Mediterranean restaurant of our acquaintance. Having piled into the car when festivities were over and decided to rest my eyes for a moment I awoke in Buckinghamshire, un-kebabbed. As Sunray and Sunray Minor were also unfed there was a distinct frosty atmosphere. Sunday morning I made it out of bed (or technically off the sofa) in plenty of time to feed Sunray Minor and walk him down to the Club to coach him at Rugby. I will gloss over the fact that I couldn't find his kit and he forgot his gumshield, and that Sunray found the former where I had put it for safekeeping in May and the latter on the kitchen worktop and drove to find us to hand them over. Therefore Sunday afternoon instead of setting to work on the Chieftain I weeded the terrace, tidied all the children's play stuff from the garden, assisted with Sunray Minor's prep and cooked both Sunday and Monday's dinners. The moral of this story is always check the labels on Innis & Gunn beer bottles as the blonde may slip down beautifully, but on a hot day at 6% it is not conducive to happy family relations or alertness on car journeys...
  20. I was really pleased with the nice paint finish on mine. Then I saw what Dan is doing. It's lovely, just with that slightly faded, dusty look. Many congratulations - it's me who has the hard act to follow. Just hoping for a bit of nice weather Sunday afternoon. I have a Rugby Club meeting tonight, the London Double Header tomorrow and am coaching Sunday, so that will be my opportunity...
  21. Just fabulous, Dan. I particularly like the way you've taken chunks out of the road wheel rubber...
