  1. The butcher bird is looking good, PC, even in an aesthetic sense (that will go once the landing gear goes on, I suppose). I concur with the parenting advice - the only people that disapprove of other children's normal behaviour are those that have never had one.
  2. That pretty much nails it. My parents (and my friends' parents) were all to young to remember the war, though my mate's mother can remember how hungry she was in Holland in 1944-45. But their parents never opened up about the war; even my grandfather, who was ground crew in Bomber Command, didn't talk about it to anyone other than me. Everyone was rather surprised to discover (from his autobiography) that my mother's uncle was in command of landing craft off Omaha Beach. He felt that warranted one sentence in his book of life. I had a wonderful conversation with one of his friends, who had served in Burma with a mountain artillery battery. At the end he said that he wasn't traumatised by what he'd seen, but he'd never spoken to anyone else about it because he didn't think anyone was interested.
  3. I found the wheel well construction on Eduard's 1/48 Spitfire IX to be very clever in that it resulted in a rather nicer wheel well than I would normally expect. Too clever, though, because I couldn't for the life of me figure out why two pieces weren't symmetrical, but assumed this was just another example of Eduard's cleverness. Turned out that was where the undercarriage legs were going to be seated and I had one in upside-down. Oops. Nothing that Milliput couldn't conquer, and in any case I rarely go inspecting those parts of my completed models, so no harm done. What a jolly good idea, I think I'll copy that when I get to that Special Hobby P-47 that keeps calling to me, thanks!
  4. Yes, I think the camo scheme suits its lines, and it's been very well executed; really nice model.
  5. Love the research, PC; though I share your aversion to the 190, I'll be following along if I may.
  6. That's a very good looking 190 (well, within the capability of any 190 to look beautiful, which in this beholder's eye is decidedly limited). I'm building up the courage to tackle some 1/72 fabric belts; at least they might be more resistant than etch to my clumsiness.
  7. They're looking better than I'd feared, given the state of the tail wheel doors, Ced.
  8. Hi Alex, I'll be following along with interest. Already I've concluded that no Pavla kits should enter my stash (wouldn't it be good if you could just block unwanted listings on ebay to prevent even the merest hint of temptation?), but I wish you the best of luck wrangling with this octopus. Cheers, Chris
  9. I was hoping that I was wrong, but I moved on to Vallejo varnish anyway as I find it easier to brush. I just bought a load of Vallejo and Ammo/MIG paints, so I'm loath to add another range (but as I'm on a self-imposed model buying embargo, it could be a good deflection so that I can continue to "invest" in my hobby). Chris
  10. I've had that silk problem with W&N matt, but I've always attributed it to having failed to mix the varnish properly. Very nice work, Ced, you're tempting me to acquire some Lifecolors. Have a good weekend! Chris
  11. As always, Ced, I'm humbled by your determination and readiness to deal with a kit like this. I've just shelved a Trumpy Gannet for flaws that are insignificant compared to any one of those you've found so far on this adventure. Cheers, Chris
  12. Well, sounds to me like you've done enough research to justify whichever approach works best for you, Ced. The instructions are making it hard enough, without adding to the pain.
  13. I reckon Ced's right. Maybe they can be safely masked with those low density polystyrene peanuts, with the more delicate parts added at the end of the build? (Oh, and good to see you're on top of things, Ced)
  14. Thanks everyone. I think I might be going with the clear sprue; the arrester gear is well and truly glued into the raised position, and trying additional weights in the nose wheel well wasn't effective enough. Any hints on how to make it relatively unobtrusive? I reckon a short stump beneath the radome dustbin would be best.
  15. Oh, good lord, Ced. What madness?
  16. Moi aussi. I also have a soft spot for the searchlight jawed Tiffie, PC, I know from where you're coming. Do you know whether the gap should be filled for accuracy (surely a bit easier than sanding down)?
  17. I swear, I tested the balance carefully while I was building it. Landing gear on last night, and it's a bloody tail sitter! The only thing for it is to stuff the nose wheel well and hope it's enough; I think it will be (but then I thought this problem was solved, didn't I?)
  18. Hi, I'd like to participate if it's not too late. The timing's pretty tough vis-a-vis work commitments, so I'd commit to a P-40B in Soviet markings (Airfix 1/72 from the 2013 Club offering, though it'd be without the winter whitewash) as it should be a quick and pleasant build. My "stretch" target then would be the 1/48 Zvezda Pe-2, temptress that it is. Thanks, Chris
  19. I had well and truly fallen out of love with this build; I think it was just the accumulation of minor issues. But I've trudged on and tonight the decals went on, and I started the joyous task of scraping and polishing the canopies (which all have a prominent seam running down the middle). Not too bad, actually. In my desire to get on and finish the job, I've let a fair few gross imperfections remain, but the seams were just too much even for me. I've got to say, though: as usual it looks a damn sight better with the stickers on. Now I just have to gather my energy for the final push. I also discovered today that the kit's standard build (flaps down) would generally be inappropriate for a parked Gannet. Modelling them up also covers some very obvious sink marks, so saves another tedious job. Double win! Not great pictures; hard to avoid the glare on the gloss coat, I'm afraid. Also just noticed that this shot of the starboard side preceded the application of half the decals. D'oh!
  20. They came out very well indeed, Ced, and your WiP was as informative and entertaining as ever.
  21. Oh, a Hind! Is that not reason enough? Bit of a change as well.
  22. Large parts of it cover matters other than the actual shooting, but to read some interesting works from the German perspective, I recommend Germany & The Second World War vol 3. As the OUP have kindly published it in paperback, it's now available at a much more reasonable price (still expensive, though). One caveat: I don't know whether they skimped on the maps when they went to the paperback edition. https://global.oup.com/academic/product/germany-and-the-second-world-war-9780198738329?lang=en&cc=gb#
  23. Really nice, Stew, and I'm glad to see you're on the mend and back in the groove.
