  1. Hi Daryl, nice to have you along. You probably know a lot more than I do, so please let me know when I go astray!
  2. Phew. Several sessions later and I have something that looks a lot more like a gray/white Phantom. I'll shortly be losing airbrush access, so my plan is to varnish this base coat and start on the boatload of decalling that needs to be done. The metal areas around the tail are, I think, going to be painted later on, to avoid the risks of masking over them while the varnish gets sprayed about. Took advantage of some early spring-like weather to get some natural light for photos: And, for good measure, evidence of impending spring:
  3. That is a nicely fitting kit, G. Lovely work thus far.
  4. Very strikingly weathered machine. What a way to introduce yourself!
  5. Thanks, @CedB, as I'd completely missed this thread. I would be proper chuffed if I could meet up with you all should you venture to Duxford/Cambridge/Suffolk/Madingley/Old Warden. Also very happy to provide transportation around the neighbourhood, given that public transport around these parts is generally god-awful. One spot that hasn't been mentioned is Bassingbourn; although it's been substantially altered and operated as an army barracks for many years, the tower is still there and there's a museum. Currently shut because the MoD have closed the base, but the curators are trying to get it reopened this year (the museum, not the base).
  6. Jamie, this is a fascinating monster of a build, and I appreciate your introduction of alternate solutions to problems. That does appear to be a lot of plastic that Monogram stuffed into the rear of the airframe for little perceptible gain. Riffing on the RE magnet solution suggested earlier (which I suspect is an excellent one as you'd want a model this size to be based, right?), would it be possible to use other magnets in the tail and base to repel each other? I suspect height would be a problem, and you'd have to get the orientation spot on to avoid too much lateral force; I'd certainly balls it up, but you're an engineer!
  7. Marvellous intro as always, PC. There are hundreds of BMers more versed in things Lancastrian than me, but I can confirm that the pilots got armrests.
  8. Nice start on a nice scheme. And welcome to the BM madhouse! I believe they'd be static dischargers. Massively over-scale...
  9. Oh, good! The more the merrier. Would love to see nine Tornadoes go past, but the 28th isn't so convenient for me.
  10. In case anyone was planning for the 28th (sorry, @Jinxman), it's been brought forward and will be between Feb 19th and Feb 21st: https://ukaviation.news/raf-to-carry-out-tornado-farewell-tour-of-uk/ Since it conveniently coincides with half-term round here, and I'm on child-sitting duties, I might go and see it at Duxford if the weather looks permissive.
  11. Brilliant! Are you planning a visit to Duxford or its environs in those two weeks?
  12. Absolutely; the frustration is because you know they can execute so well, rather than because they just cannot compete, and because they do so much good work before letting it go. Talking of dinner, I must go and start tonight's curry (Keralan chicken, for those with culinary curiosity).
  13. Coming along very nicely, Jon. I got so irritated with the rugby that I disappeared to go and do some therapeutic painting.
  14. Nice choice of subject, I'm definitely in for this one. I'm afraid I can't give any advice on the kit or, indeed, on wobblycopter construction generally, though.
  15. Vielen dank, Werner. Hard to argue that the addition of a Vulcan cannon wouldn't improve most aircraft. I was building a Revell F-4F many moons ago, but the cockpit tub went awol at some point, which rather hampered progress. I'm in the process of laying down some of the base colours, but I'm taking it slowly. The Vallejo Model Air LGG is a ... for clogging the tip of my Iwata, even when thinned down considerably.
  16. I reckon you may be on to something with the flat v gloss marbling, John. Still, I think the finish looks very good both above and below. I've had a look at a few photos of Sleepy Time Gal, and there's nothing in them that suggests to me that those areas are metal.
  17. Thanks, Christer. I will be post-shading too, this was principally an experiment to get some variation into the base white. Not especially successful; it's subtle even in the morning sunlight.
  18. With gaps filled, I felt the urge to get some paint down. I have never really tried pre-shading, but in the spirit of trying new stuff, I thought I'd give it a go. So, some likely looking areas received some dark grey, then I laid down some white to see the effect. It's subtler than I'd expected. What do you think, dear readers? Should I be laying down a stronger pre-shade?
  19. The light gull grey went into action and so this morning I attached the intakes. Starboard one pretty good but an irritating gap to port.
  20. I had the pleasure of watching Italy host the All Blacks in November. Despite the wholly one-sided nature of the game, I never heard a single Italian supporter complain, no one around us left their seats early, and they kept chanting and cheering their team on to the bitter end. They were even very kind to me after I butchered Fratelli d'Italia.
  21. Wow, how quickly did those weeks pass? I had made a little progress on painting the hull, but by 'eck these things are big, aren't they? Last night I made a start on the turrets. Here's what I think they're supposed to look like: Aaaaannd, here's what mine look like. I did some basic light enhancement on the photo, hence the speckliness of the darker areas. Looks like I've mispositioned the front set of steps. They're attached with varnish, so hopefully I can adjust without damaging them.
  22. Oooohhhh. As Bill said: Hoooooorayyy! I have one of those big Revell Lynxes in the stash, simply because the price:plastic ratio was too good to resist. So a Crisp build can show me how it ought to be built, even if the result is something to which I can only aspire. And I appreciate the bottleneck that comes from being restricted to weekend painting.
