  1. I picked up a pair of these last week at Home Bargains (or some such treasure trove of inexpensive marvels). Given how near Oakington is to my house, this scheme will be a must, and I like the look of the PE as well, may have to hunt that down. Great start, John!
  2. Hear, hear. I dislike speculating, but I hope the depression is the malaise that most parents of <1 year olds experience at times, in which case I can only quote Mr Churchill: "When going through hell, keep going".
  3. Ced, I think it's come out rather splendidly. That canopy is just a problem: not just the extensive framing to be masked, but what looks like a difficult join to the fuselage. I think Vallejo putty would be fine for filling such gaps, easy enough to smooth it to a good-looking join without too much fuss. And all of the highlighted parts that disappointed you were completely invisible in the first shot from normal viewing range, of course. Actually, I now find myself putting the kit higher up my wish list.
  4. Aha, another Bufton beauty, splendid. Don't mind me, I'll just lurk behind Keith.
  5. I am told that FG&DN is rather good, though I've never had the chance to play.
  6. Ah, a kit that often catches my eye but, being far less brave than Tony, I fear the name Azur and stick to my beautifully engineered Eduard kits and their ilk. I'd love to see how this one builds up, looking forward to it.
  7. On the strength of this, I detoured to my nearest store this afternoon, where they had a healthy stock of Vampires, F-51s, Cromwell tanks, and some later mark Spitfires that I didn't look at too closely. Happy selection as I've been hoping for a cheap Vampire to fall into my lap for some time. So, thanks for the tip-off, even if Airfix's need to sell off stock at what I suspect to be below cost raises more concerns about their financial position. Very nice work on the kit, I'm looking forward to seeing more.
  8. Well, there's never a good reason not to get more paints! I have a couple of Revell's acrylics (in those silly square pots with angled lids) but they didn't excite me too much. The only other Humbrol acrylics I have are Luftwaffe colours, so until I build a suitable subject, they won't get tried. Most of my paints are Vallejo, with a scattering of MIG, Lifecolor, and some Alclad for when I want to sniff the good stuff.
  9. No photos until it's looking more presentable, but in the last few days I can report the application of paint. In accordance with Tessitori, I'm going for British colours rather than US. Lower surfaces have had their Humbrol Sky, which is one of my favourite paints: I can brush neat from the pot and get excellent thin coverage with a single coat (why don't I own more Humbrol paints?) Upper surfaces are providing a trial for Lifecolor DE/DG, which need three coats minimum to get coverage.
  10. Terrific outcome, Wolwe. I'm sure the gift was welcomed!
  11. Enjoy the feast, Ced. Reminds me of a devotedly veggie friend who moved to Yorkshire and tried to find a local F&C shop that didn't use beef dripping to fry their chips. At the fifth shop, the owner told her "There was one who did that. Didn't last long." Time to relocate to God's Own Country, Ced! Me, I'm having Chinese takeaway, a rare treat. I like the idea for masking gun barrels, Ced, should be flexible yet sturdy enough to help prevent little knocks.
  12. It's an area of such frustrating fiddliness that often results in one of those slight imperfections that stands out on inspection. Ced, Stew, I appreciate your words of reassurance! It's a tough one - the type is not one that particularly appeals to me (even if I consider only Luftwaffe subjects). Of the main types operated in 1940 only the Stuka has less desirability, so it's a pretty marginal decision. I was likely only to get it as part of the dogfight double with the Defiant, anyway, and the 1/48 Defiant has greater allure right now. That was a longwinded way of saying that it was only ever a marginal decision, wasn't it?
  13. The more I read of this kit, the less keen I am to acquire one, I must say.
  14. Thanks, Tony. It's a very easy kit to build (OK, this is only the second one, but neither have presented any significant problems), certainly compared to your Polikarpovs. Progress is slowing right up as year-end workload builds, though - nothing done at all this week, sadly.
  15. I reckon you've made this kit six times over, Tony. You're a marvel; any one of your mishaps would have had me dumping the kit in the bin, accompanied by some choice Anglo-Saxon. Keep going!
  16. Thanks, Al, I'll keep an eye on the pot. I don't have much experience with Tensocrom, and the white was only briefly used once.
  17. Exceptional work thus far. I wish I could help with the panel question, but my knowledge of the F-14 is almost entirely derived from Top Gun, and I don't think they discussed that topic (maybe it was in the director's cut).
  18. Yes, very good thus far and I'm pleased to see that AZ have given a 1945 marking option with the fuselage roundels, which makes the kit more attractive to me. The Wildcat is strikingly larger, that's for sure.
  19. Thanks, Stew (up early on a Sunday, eh?!) The upper cowl wasn't the best fit, but some clamping got it to the point where only one corner really needed any filler. Cheers, Chris
  20. Airframe now fundamentally done, just the fiddly bits to go on. I must have skewed the lower wings when I attached them to the fuselage, as the upper wings both had a substantial gap to fill at the root (one at the front, the other at the back). Hopefully not noticeable. I also managed to get the first coat on the canopy framing. Good progress by my standards, though this is a blameless kit other than the soft Airfix material and the large sprue gates.
  21. OK, a break of two weeks for holiday and the inevitable catch-up on work that accumulated while I was away, but back to the cutting board last night. Mainly touch-up work and test fitting but it's progress. I decided to do the bare minimum on the interior as it's virtually invisible once built, and that was a wise decision as it transpired that I'd put the IP decal on the back of the IP before I went on holiday!
