  1. I love the random shades in the paint finish on the P-40, it looks very '3D'. Do you mind if I ask what you did to get that finish?
  2. This is very, very good modelling! I love the attention to oil streaks and dirt.
  3. Thanks for the advice! I really want to do a forlorn and battered Mi-6 as if sitting in a junkyard somewhere in Poland - may be a bit beyond my skills but I figure it's worth a crack.
  4. Very smart! What did you think of the Amodel kit? I'm wondering whether to splash £50 on their 1/72 Mil Mi-6 as a venture into helicopters...
  5. Really lovely model. I will have to get my hands on some of that Promodeller wash, it complements your neat camouflage finish and isn't overpowering at this scale. One thing I noticed - the horizontal stabilisers seem to have a bit of dihedral when they should be completely level, is this my eyes playing tricks on me though?
  6. Humbrol clearfix works well, I use for temporary and final fixing. It foes leave fine wisps of dried stuff but these are easily brushed away. It doesn't damage paintwork like normal poly glue.
  7. Nice Hurricane! Presumably if the factory shop is a couple of miles away you live in the Ramsgate area? I'm based in Canterbury and have just discovered the very friendly bunch of guys who meet at Manston. Funnily enough I just took my completed Typhoon along - look forward to seeing yours!
  8. Cracking. I think this is my favourite aircraft of all time and that colour scheme is brilliant. The pre-shading works just right on this, it jumps out of the screen at you!
  9. Phew, I'm glad I could be of some use Hope it wasn't too much of a bugger to get them straight! I never noticed the 'plus-size' pilot before - maybe he's more relevant in these times of overeating and under-exercising anyway... you could call the diorama "wyvern in the 21st century".
  10. Cracking finish and setting. By rights this is really an ugly plane but somehow that makes it all the more appealing as a model! One thing I did notice in the 6th picture, the wings seem to have different amounts of dihedral, trick of the camera position? Hope this doesn't sound like criticism, believe me, as a rookie I'm in no position to criticise a model of this quality
  11. Funnily enough I was least happy with the work on the underside. I used vallejo acrylic wash and oils for the panel lines but the acrylic is really hard to 'drag' across the surface for a realistic effect; it tends to bunch up and dry in rings around the areas you originally applied it and dries so fast it's hard to keep on top of it. Maybe I'm just not doing it right! Tips welcome...
  12. Tony - thanks! I had a hunch that was the case from the instructions but I couldn't bear to miss out on the rockets! You always learn on here anyway
  13. Thanks all. Val - just do it! I'm really a 1/48th man too but the typhoon is such a large aircraft it looks good in small scale too - the wheels on this are actually larger than the 1/48 Raiden I finished previously! It was fun indeed - though if you do, watch the way the various cockpit bits go together when you join the fuselage. Irritatingly I found I had the instrument board BEHIND one of the flanges it's supposed to sit on after everything had set. Obviously you can't really see this but it was one of the reasons I chose to do the cockpit closed
  14. Check out the build by Redboost if you want to see how well it can really turn out! My jaw pretty much fell out.
  15. Amazing! I have just finished one of these and then I go and check this out and feel like going and hibernating! How do you go about adding the rivet detail at this scale, and then painting without losing it all again? Chris
  16. Haha, not the one you're probably thinking of! It's a completely new tool, released only last month I think. Got it by chance impulse in the LMS without realising how much people were raving about it until I got it together. It really is a gem in almost all aspects, especially for £6!
  17. Lovely! I remember doing that Airfix 109 kit as a kid (not nearly so nicely I should add...) and kinda makes me want to do another! I must ask, what was the purpose of the 'half and half' early RAF underside scheme? Was it just to break up the shape of the plane?
  18. That mottling really is exceptional at this scale! Very sweet indeed.
  19. Hi all! It's been a while but I finally made a push and finished it. Or so I thought, having noticed as I put the camera away I had forgotten to fit the pitot tube and radio antenna (a bit of copper electrical wire). I guess you can use your imagination. The two rockets missing are going to be having the fuses fitted by some ground crew when I get round to doing a little diorama (my first try...) Even in 72nd this kit has a good 'presence' - well done Airfix. Only minor niggle that's not really fixable is the slightly undersized spinner: there's a wee 'step' to the nose cowling, thought it's probably my poor workmanship more than anything!
  20. Brilliant! I wasn't expecting to come on here for a chuckle but the deadpan introduction of the Transformers diorama was genius! And a jolly good model to boot.
  21. Thanks! I have found Microsol is a bit temperamental. It's great on Enamels but when I put it on the Klear layer I got a weird fading effect under the blobs of liquid. I didn't wait to see if it dried OK but padded it off and used Solvaset. I'm umming and ahhing about how to do the weathering now, since I'm scared of using oils but I know they work much better at wicking into panel lines than the Vallejo washes I bought. I also took some inspiration from you and am making some pigs' tails for the rockets - pics soon!
  22. Right it's been a while but that's mainly laziness in taking photos and posting. Spent ages filling and sanding, more because I didn't know what I was doing than because it was necessary. Thought I'd try the white-tack method for masking. All humbrol enamels, the Ocean Grey is of my own concoction, not having the colour from the tin. US dark sea grey, lightened a little and with a hint of green. Post these photos I had a disaster with the oil panel line wash dissolving the day-old satin cote, so had to strip down to the Klear and re-cover. It will sit for a long time before attempting the same again! The cannon bay doors in the pic I decided to cut apart and thin significantly to make a bit more scale-looking, which I also did to the wing trailing edges. No idea whether the doors should be metal or green or yellow? Small bonus - the crappy exhaust stains you can see here came off too so I can have another stab at making them look less like puffs of cotton wool... Decals were a peach, beautifully printed and settled down with Solvaset (seems to work better than Microsol for me and less reaction with the Klear undercoat).
  23. HI guys, well it was definitley a disaster averted. It's not 100% as good as it was before but I'm pretty happy. Cotton wool pads and WS as suggested. These photos are after stripping off and a fresh coat. A small benefit was getting rid of the airbrushed exhaust which I had done terribly (I have no detail airbrush skills!!) Thanks again for assuring me it would be OK.
