It was a pretty decent airplane, another USN design that had a short service life, but an offshoot of the F4D, the F5D Skylancer, would have been an even more potent performer, had it gone into production; with the J-79 engine, it would have had outstanding performance! See the link to an article on the F5D. There is a Project X 1/72 vacform that was released by Maintrack years ago; I have one and it is an excellent kit of the F5D. Thought you might enjoy reading about another obscure USN golden age jet! BTW, the Tamiya kit is an excellent one!

I have actually built the Tamiya kit. I did it in USN Test Pilots School markings. According the decal sheet, the TPS kept a Skyray in their fleet "to teach students how to fly an aircraft with poor handling characteristics"

The spacecraft is the instantly recognisable Orion Clipper from the movie 2001 A Space Odyssey. I saw this movie as a boy and the early space sequences were breathtaking. Some of the latter parts of the movie on the other hand were extremely disorienting.
Have you read the book? It explains very well what is happening at the end, because as you say the last part of the movie is just bonkers. Probably makes sense if you're off your head on psychedelic drugs, but for the rest of us...
Lovely model btw.

I'm amazed the Skyray got produced by Tamiya
I think it's the only aircraft kit made by a mainstream manufacturer that I'd never actually heard of. In my monster History of US Naval Aviation it merits one tiny black and white photo.

That is an absolutely stunning kit. The paint job is incredible, all the effort you put into the masking for the different colours has really paid off. The metallic sheen on the paint is also spot on.

Do you mean favourite subject? (F-4D in Euro1)
Or do you mean favourite model? (Airfix B-17)

That's a wonderfully done conversion and a terrific job with the paint scheme with two colours that can be very hard to get a good finish with

Wow, that is a stunner!
One of the most elegant of Spits, in the prettiest of schemes, and flawlessly built and painted.

Lovely build, and nice work on these details.

I don't think I've got all bits for it anymore after the most recent feline intervention. Flaps, wheels, canopy, legs.....everything was broken off, even the wings, and I was unable to retrieve all the wreckage from the crash site.....

Lovely paint finish on that beauty
And I agree with you, it is an absolute superb kit, one of my favourite ever. Gorgeous subject, great fit, good detail, and at a dirt cheap price. All it needs is a resin bang seat and you're good to go. Alas, mine has been trashed 3 times, once by a house move and twice by two different cats. I haven't the heart to restore it again.....

Wow, not gunna lie, I thought the first pic was a real aircraft initially.
Superb model, superb weathering, superb photography

The Stratos is one of the coolest cars ever, and yours is a beauty. Love how its all dirty and grimy, and in its natural habitat on a muddy base.

Very nice job in tarting that up

Very, very, VERY cool.
I would ask if it was inspired by the barn finds in Forza Horizon 4, but the figures don't seem dressed for that
-
It's not a........Flanker?
But it is very nice nevertheless. And a cool and unusual subject

Cracking looking model. I'm no photography expert, but it may look darker because you have a white background, maybe the white model would show up better against a darker background?
-
Fantastic little collection. That low down shot of them with all three noses pointed up is a great angle, very dynamic and reminiscent of the films
-
Now that is cool.

Nice model of a unique aircraft. Must admit I have a bit of a soft spot for the Hastings.
Cutlass and Tiger, why no kits

Well, I did say mainstream which excludes Lindberg and Hawk/Testor and I don't remember ever seeing an Airfix Skyray. The Tamiya kit was the first time I ever remember coming across the aircraft.
