Lesser Built Air Forces GB + CONFIRM BUILDS NOW +
Speedman replied to CliffB's topic in Group Build Chat 2020
If we can build a subject from any period in aviation history, what are the rules regarding countries that no longer exist in name only? E.g., Rhodesia becoming Zimbabwe after independence in 1980? If I'm allowed, I'll do Rhodesia. -
Master Box 1/72 Mk.1 Female - Completed
Speedman replied to Speedman's topic in World War One, 100th Anniversary Group Build
Thanks everyone. MUD!!!!! Built up in four stages... To start I used Revell's Dark Earth acrylic to give a base colour for the mud on the tracks and lower hull, I also added a little to the top of the sponsons and hull. I then made up a dark sludge using scrapings from a dark brown pastel and Microscale Liquid Decal Film and applied it to the tracks. After all the sludge was used... Not forgetting the wheels of course. After this was thoroughly dry I dabbed on a coating of Polly Scale Dirt. The last coat was a dry brushing of Polly Scale Mud. I'll try to get a "daylight" photo or two posted up soon, the flash makes it look a lot lighter than it is.- 63 replies

Master Box 1/72 Mk.1 Female - Completed
Speedman replied to Speedman's topic in World War One, 100th Anniversary Group Build
I've managed to take some photos in daylight at last! I applied some orange rust to the tracks using Tamiya's Weathering Master set C to add some lighter tones, and I've dry brushed the rest of the model including the rear wheel assembly. I used four different colours to dry brush, white, cream, medium grey and light olive. Each was applied to a corresponding paint shade to keep the contrast over the camouflage equal.- 63 replies

Master Box 1/72 Mk.1 Female - Completed
Speedman replied to Speedman's topic in World War One, 100th Anniversary Group Build
Thanks everyone The next stage of weathering is complete. I sprayed a "dirty" layer using Citadel's Nuln Oil & Agrax Earthshade thinned 50/50 with IPA, keeping the staining low on the hull and accentuating joints including those on the upper surfaces. I used a black Pitt pen to fill the sighting slots and used a cotton bud to remove the excess.- 63 replies

Sweet 1/144 P-51B Mustang x2 (Glen & Rosey) - Completed
Speedman replied to Speedman's topic in P-51Mustang STGB II
They hadn't had a filter or wash at that point, they toned down after they were applied. Saturday got me to this point... Almost there! Lots of little detail parts ready to go. And Sunday I finished! More photos of Glen and Rosey in the gallery. The giant penny is back! -

Master Box 1/72 Mk.1 Female - Completed
Speedman replied to Speedman's topic in World War One, 100th Anniversary Group Build
I tried it a test area with a fine tipped Sharpie but the thickness looked to uniform, so I painted over it and continued to the rest of the model. I'll do my best So, a bit of weathering... I mixed an oil wash of Black and Burnt Sienna and dabbed it all over applying a little extra in any recesses. At the same time I applied a thicker wash of Yellow Ochre to the tracks. Once dried I removed it with a cotton bud leaving the paint looking dirty but not worn. Wash applied. Excess removed. The effect of Yellow Ochre on the tracks.- 63 replies

Speedman replied to Speedman's topic in P-51Mustang STGB II
Thanks It took about 3 hours to sand both and then 20 minutes to polish them but it's was worth the time. I was a bit worried about crushing them between my fingers while polishing as they are very fragile now. Progress! Canopy masks were made and applied, then after a coat of primer some pre-shading followed by a few light coats of grey for the undersides. -

Cheers guys The decal strips work really well and I'll be using this method again. It takes a lot of time to do it this way (about 4 hours for cockpit, turret and nose) but it's worth it. I'd never get them this crisp by masking... It's finished! More photos in the gallery.

I modified the front and added tow hooks, lifting eyes, headlights, tail light, horn and a plate on the left rear fender. Markings are very wrong for an early Dingo but there are none supplied with the kit and I had to raid the spares box. I must be crazy! Pre-primer, you can see some of the added detail more clearly.

Cheers for the heads up! I decided to thin the canopies from inside to ensure a good fit, slowly but surely with a lot of 2000 grit wet and dry then polished with Autosol. Comparison between sanded and standard. Malcolm hood sanded and test fitted. -

I'll get some photos of each stage of weathering and do my best to describe how I did it. The tracks have been painted and given a light post shade spray to break up the block colour. I've nearly finished the anti-grenade frame.- 63 replies

Unfortunately, spare 1/144 decals are few and far between. I did manage to patch then up with a little paint and a couple of coats of Clear. It's had a pin wash and some post shading to dirty it up a bit and I used sliver painted decal strips for the framing on all the glazing, it's the first time I've tried this technique and it worked well. Undercarriage is only test fitted in this shot.
