    Maybe there should be a "What's the worst kit you've built?" thread on Britmodeller that covers all subjects? Could be quite funny! I know what my entry would be, I'm working on it at the moment... But seriously, it could be used as a warning to some and the source of a challenging built to others.

    I've knocked up a couple of banners for the A-4 and obsolete kit group builds if anyone wants to use them.

    It was a custom mix of Revell acrylics... 48% 05 white 32% 76 light grey 16% 49 light blue 4% 56 blue I spent 4 days experimenting with the mix, I had to factor in the oil wash as well and ended up making over 30 test swatches. I like the way the colour changes, in the shade it's grey and in strong light (or camera flash) it's blue.

    Hi, I'm in with the Airfix A4-B starter kit. I had a £5 voucher code for Argos so it ended up being £1.88 with free postage! I'll be building it OOB but needless to say I don't think I'll be using the glue, paint and brushes that were supplied. I'll be finishing the kit to represent BuNo 142833 (kit decals) as exhibited in the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum.

    I brush painted the Clear on this one but I have sprayed it as well, in both cases it's fantastic. The only thing I've found is that you have to make sure transparencies are thoroughly clean if your dipping them. As for the price, seeing how some people are paying £20 and upwards + p&p for a 1 litre bottle of Klear on eBay the price isn't too bad. I already had a bottle but I've bought another 7 at half price from Modelzone.

    An absolute pig of a kit OOB!! I love the P-40 so I decided to spruce it up a bit. I drilled out the intake and put some detail in there. I also added the radiator flaps and set them in the open position, (yes, they were individually made and glued on...) the undercarriage doors had to be made as the kit didn't come with any. The tail wheel was made from scrap plastic bits and the guns were made by drilling and gluing in a section of bristle from a cleaning brush. Brush painted with Revell acrylics, spayed with a top coat of Tamiya satin varnish and weathered with pastels. P.S. Canopy was awful, it doesn't have a smooth finish to the glazing and even has an air bubble on the starboard side!!

    Brush painted in Revell acrylics with a top coat of Tamiya satin varnish, pastels were used for the weathering. Markings are fictional for a night fighter but I wasn't about to spend £10 for decals on a £3 kit.

    Two Revell 1/144 P-47Ds strapped together... Built this just as a little "fun" project. £4 for the kits + a little plastic card + some filler + a few hours = A monster of a fighter! I swapped the undercarriage legs, bays and doors over, it would have looked a bit daft having them close together inboard of the fuselage or miles apart. I brush painted the whole thing and decals were a mix of kit and spares box.

    As with my previous Star Wars easy kit, I put it together and immediately decided to take it apart and repaint it. Hunting around online for reference photos for the correct colour (the kit was too blue) I found a picture of an Interceptor with red stripes. After a bit of digging around I found that it was the markings for the 181st Imperial Fighter Group, so that's what I decided to do. I repainted the interior, detailed and weathered it plus I painted the pilot in the 181st uniform colours. The exterior was primed and then a few light coats of white followed by gloss red for the stripes. The lines were then masked and I put down a couple of coats of black for the panels. Once the panels were masked the whole model was sprayed with a grey/blue mix. Individual panels/bits were picked out using various colours (mostly greys) followed a couple of coats of Humbrol Clear and then a simple oil wash. Once the excess was removed I sealed it with Tamiya satin varnish. Painted in Revell acrylics apart from the Humbrol Clear and Tamiya satin varnish.

    Two hour build! These kits are aimed at war gamers primarily so parts count and detail are both low, but I love 1:144, and Russian WWII subjects are thin on the ground so this kit appealed to me. I needed something fun to build as I've got a few projects that are trudging along and I just wanted something I could build quickly and get finished. That's when it hit me... How fast can I build it? I originally thought I'd just build it and see how long it took but then decided to set a two hour limit. I just came in under it with the help of very thinned out paint and a hair dryer. Brush painted with Tamiya & Revell acrylics, Humbrol Clear and a final spray of Tamiya matt varnish. So if you're ever experiencing "builders block", grab one of these Zvezda kits (109, Hurricane, Lagg-3, IL-2, Stuka) and have some fun!

    I painted the rear of the splitter plates and the adjacent fuselage in a slightly darker shade than the paint mix I was using for the lower fuselage. When I sprayed the lower, the splitter acted as a mask and gave a nice feathered blend between the two colours. Look at any photo of a Hornet and it's dark in the gap anyway.

    I found this in my local branch of Antics, having recently built a "snap fit" Zvezda 1/200 Li-2 transport plane I though I'd give this a go. Like the Li-2 I decided to glue it together as well as go for a nice weathered finish. No markings were supplied so I raided my decal stash and found something that looked OK. Painted in Revell acrylics, the scheme is purely fictional and just evolved as I went. Weathering was done using oil washes, pastels and dry brushing. The mud is pastels mixed with Micro Set and applied as a sludge.

    Well after a few days tied up with other stuff, I finally managed to get this one finished. I gave the aircraft, canopy and drop tank a couple of coats of Tamiya matt clear before removing the canopy masking. Really happy with the result, some nice crisp lines using Tamiya tape and a little Maskol. I glued the tank and arrestor hook on and then used a little Kristal Klear for the canopy. So there you have it, my first ever group build completed. I've enjoyed the build, I love the markings and I'm happy with the result. I hope everyone who has given advice and commented has enjoyed it too, more photos in the gallery section. Speedman.

    Did a bit more this afternoon. Painted and fitted the exhausts. Undercarriage doors now have their red edges, top of the fin got it's blue mix and that enabled me to finish off the decals. The tip of the nose cone got a lick of paint, as did the navigation lights and the wingtip rails. Finally I fitted the undercarriage legs ready for me to paint and fit the wheels. A few little things to tidy up but nothing too worrying.

    Sprayed the upper surfaces, I used the same paints but with a different mix. 76 = 50% or 6 drops. 05 = 34% or 4 drops. 49 = 16% or 2 drops. The photos don't show it up properly but it does work well and the colour changes slightly depending on the light. In sunlight it the upper has a slight blue tinge to it but in "normal" light it's more of a grey. Got a lot of the decals applied last night after a couple of coats of Humbrol Clear. I ditched the decals for blue flashes at the top of the fins as they were far too dark, I'm going to make up a paint mix to match the photos I have.

    I'm sure some of these manufactures do it on purpose just to get the parts count up. That way we think we're getting more for our money!

    Has your cockpit turned up yet? So annoying when you can't get on with a build because of one or two parts.
