Congratulations PeterW, fantastic model! Well worth all the time and effort with those decals

Thanks to the hosts and everyone else in the build for making me feel so welcome on my first group outing. I'm well into my second now and I start my third in a few days
I think I've got the bug because I've already made plans for three more after that! -
And a few more...

Got a few decals on tonight, annoyingly they are slightly different sizes to the markings on the museum exhibit so I've had to go down the "artistic licence" route

Please excuse the very grainy photo, had to put my tablet camera on night mode because taking it with flash was causing whiteout.

Looking at the photo it is a horrible waste of styrene is it not?

Try squinting, it helps...

There's enough weight in the nose without the drop tank to be honest. I'm always a little paranoid and tend to add as much as possible because I mainly work in 1/144 and usually have very little space to play with. I have a 1/144 Trumpeter F-86 which was a bit of a nightmare, that was the first time I added weight to drop tanks and I've done it ever since. The nice thing about the Liquid Gravity is that it's not lead, I thought it was when I bought it but it's a hard metal
Does the job though!Little tip if anyone is going to use it for the first time, pop a drop of superglue where it's going to go followed by the first few balls as this will get a good grip on the surface. First time I used it I poured a load in followed by a few drops of glue, after letting it cure I picked up the part and the whole lot fell out in one lump! Easy to glue back in after but annoying.

Red bit's done! Now I have to spray the black walkways that are on the museum exhibit.

Yeah, but luckily Humbrol Dark Earth blended quite well with all that brown carpet that was in vogue back in the 70's.

I had brown carpet but managed to spill half a tin of Humbrol 11 silver on it, then made it worse by trying to clean it with lots of enamel thinners. It spread like a plague across a fertile brown landscape...

The first Matchbox kit I ever built was the P-12E. I thought it was the coolest kit ever! Nothing I have seen since has tempted me to change my mind.

And the best thing about the kit was that they moulded it in the correct colours! I think it must be the best of all the matchbox aircraft kits for leaving unpainted back when mummy wouldn't allow you to use paints because you might spill them on the carpet.
Hands up who spilled paint on the carpet and tried to clean and cover it up
Come on, I know there's plenty of us out there. -
My first 1/48 kit! I've always loved the F-16 and when I found this in my local newsagent (I was 14 or 15 at the time) I had to have it. I was shocked at how much bigger it was to my 1/72 kits and that you could open and close the canopy! Ignoring the fact I made a pigs ear of building it
I cherished this kit and I still love that box art. Just look at it! It's firing it's gun and everything!!!

Despite the disclaimer it doesn't look at all bad, except for the pilot. Arms?? Kind of...

I sprayed the canopy black yesterday afternoon after leaving the white to dry for a good 24 hours, first time I've used the Halfords Appliance White so I wanted to be sure I'd get no lift off from masking. Apart from that I spent a few hours playing around with colour mixes for the upper surfaces. After a few hours playing and making a dozen swatches I was happy with my chosen mix.
Masked it this morning and got to work with the airbrush and my mix, gave it a few coats and left it for a while before a few coats of Humbrol Clear. Unfortunately the camera on my tablet really doesn't capture the colour that well
I should be getting the red bits done tomorrow and I'll hopefully get some decals on there by the end of the day.

You could do it in Bulgarian Air Force markings as a stablemate to my Arado, and they are both Heller kits

Found a lovely scheme over on Wings Palette... I think I'm getting a "thing" for these Bulgarian markings. I must resist building everything they flew! I must resist, I must...

When do I get my royalties?

The type of styrene used reminds me of recent new tool airfix kits - rather soft....
That's surprised me because my Heller Arado has a rather hard plastic, you'd think with them being the same manufacturer and time period that the plastics used would be similar
You live and learn. -
Another easy kit repaint just for a bit of fun that took a lot of masking but was worth it in the end
Cockpit and pilot (It was Obi-Wan but now it's Jedi Geoff) were repainted as well but I only gave the Astromech droid a bit of a touch up on the seams. I also "enhanced" the cannons with alloy tube and drilled a few holes for a bit of detail. Painted with Revell and Tamiya acrylics and weathered with oil washes, dry brushing and pastels.

One of my first kits I built when I was five
First was a Matchbox P-47 followed by their Hellcat and then the Corsair, all bought from the local newsagent. Those were the days, when you could go and buy your weekly comics (with mum) and pick up a kit at the same time. Always had to have a copy of Battle, loved reading "Johnny Red", I reckon there should be a Johnny Red group build...

Found this little gem on eBay just before Christmas and I'm really looking forward to this build. I'm going to be engraving the panel lines and I have a nice set of resin wheels that came with the decals to replace the very bland kit parts. The decal choice was born of necessity as the kit decals have yellowed, they are far worse than the photo suggests. There were a few decal choices out there but for some reason these caught my eye. When I did a bit of research I found the Bulgarian Air Force (One of the worlds oldest, being established in 1906!) flew 24 of the AR 96 from May 1940 and the markings in the decal set were used from 1938 - early 1941. So the aircraft would have only worn the markings for approximately 12 months, which in my mind makes it unusual and a little bit special.
The only down side of this is that in 6 weeks of looking through hundreds of internet pages I've yet to find a single photo of an AR 96 in these markings. It's not that I need it but it would be nice to see. I'm going to be in new territory with the Airwaves set as I've only ever dealt with buckles, small hand wheels and levers before so it should be an interesting baptism into a full PE cockpit.

Finished the undercarriage last night. This morning I sprayed a final coat of gloss white on the airframe and detailed the doors and main wheels.

-
Majority of the painting done on the undercarriage and I've done a few other parts as well.

-
Primer sprayed along with some gloss white today. I'll be working on masking the canopy and painting the undercarriage tonight.

-
Home made markings, or are they available?
They're supplied with the kit. USMC & Spanish.

-
I'm in with Revell's 1/144 EAV-8B in Spanish Navy Air Arm markings.
-
I'll be in with a Tomcat triple bill! All in glorious 1/144
All kits from Revell or Ace Corporation (Revell mould)F-14A = VF-124 in Bicentennial markings (Microscale decals)
F-14B = VF-103 "Santa Cat" (kit decals)
F-14D = VF-2 (kit decals)

Cheers
I must admit, the kit is a dream to work with so it's been an easy build and the decals are fantastic to work with. If only Airfix would start doing some "new tool" kits in 1/144...
