  1. I read this and my mind ran, nay, sprinted off on a tangent...
  2. Yup! This is a wheels up bird and it's got to have it's pilot Just got to work out how I can model him with a cigar... Well he is Cuban
  3. And the price, £1.50... That's got to bring it up to 90%
  4. Two coats of primer. Quick rub down. Pre-shading. Several coats of grey. Three coats of Humbrol Clear. Busy afternoon!
  5. OK, where do the wings go?? It's nice to see something in the build other that's not an aircraft... Apart from the Brontosaurus Looking forward to this, the only Sherman I've ever made was the old ESCI kit back in the 80's. Loved the fact they modelled the radial engine. I was never really interested in the Airfix tank range due to them putting photos of the model on the box (mid 80's). No detail, dry brushing, no weathering... They just looked very unappealing and it put me off. It'll be nice to see what I missed out on.
  6. I attached the wiper a few days ago but I've been working on my Arado for obsolete kit group build (shameless plug ) since then. Last night I made a "remove before flight" tag out of kitchen foil for the gear strut brace and attached it with one of my hairs as the wire. Have you ever tried to get super glue on a single strand of hair? Not easy I can tell you! Just had to keep stabbing it in and out of a drop of glue until it started building up on the end. I've decided to do go with the Humbrol Clear final coat, the exhibit has quite a nice sheen to it so I'm inclined to match that as I've tried to match everything else. I'll be working on the undercarriage weathering tonight so hopefully I'll get the Clear on tomorrow. A few nice photos and it'll be finished.
  7. That's weird, it is true that they are a tight fit but I popped mine on and off a few times with no problems. Comparing the intakes and the fuselage halves, are there any noticeable differences? I'm just wondering if anything is slightly malformed.
  8. This poor kit has waited 30+ years for this, and It was really strange feeling cutting into the cellophane and opening the box for the first time It's like being the Indiana Jones of plastic kits! I knew from some builds I'd found online that it had recessed panel lines, I was expecting troughs but surprisingly they are slightly finer than those found on the majority of Matchbox kits. After giving it a thorough inspection there are no sink marks and the only fault I've found is a small, very thin section of plastic from a short shot on the wing. The kit decals have survived very well. I've got big plans for those "Zombie" decals and it's not an aircraft. Two things I wasn't expecting, the canopies are two piece and the pilot isn't a blob! Finally the ESCI decals. I'll be spraying the tail markings and printing everything else I need. It'll be my first attempt at making my own decals so it should be interesting.
  9. Cheers guys! Unfortunately I've had to delay the priming of this one due to unforeseen stupidity... I forgot to attach the machine gun!! All done now.
  10. I've finished all the sanding tonight and I went over the scribing one last time. I made some new exhausts to replace the kit "stumps" and I've masked the canopy ready for some primer tomorrow. All other parts are cleaned up and ready so not a great deal left to do apart from paint and decals.
  11. Had a busy evening with this one. Fuselage, tailplane, top of the nose and the cowl are all done and dusted. The wings are on and the wing roots have had some thin strip, some putty and a sanding session so far. I'll be going over them with some Mr. Surfacer tomorrow.
  12. Control columns now painted and fitted, took this photo in night mode which is more like how it appears in daylight.
  13. Are your Airwaves instructions as vague as mine?
  14. Cheers After bulking out the knobs with a little blob of Kristal Klear I got down to painting the cockpit. I sprayed the floor, sidewalls and rollover frame grey then feathered some black in at the nose and tail to give the illusion of depth when assembled. The panels were sprayed black and the seats got some green. A few reference photos I've found online had green seats and I think it gives a nice contrast to all that grey in there, plus the belts look good with it. The knobs got a dab of either red, white or yellow and then I went blind painting two bezels half red, half yellow! (Enzo, as usual it was all done with my favourite brush ) A dry brushing of grey followed by steel highlighted thing nicely then I filled the instruments with Humbrol Clear to simulate glass. The cockpit got an all over thin black wash but I went to town on the seats. After painting the belts and buckles I gave the seats a Sap Green oil wash to add some depth to the colour without dulling it followed by a Ochre Yellow wash for the belts. The final stage was a black wash applied only around the buckles and shadow areas of the belts. The floor looks a bit wonky in the photos because it's not glued in yet I've really enjoyed working with this PE, it was easier than I thought it was going to be and has taught me some new skills. Although it would have been good to remember to breathe occasionally when gluing and painting it! I'll get some more photos tomorrow in daylight, the flash on my tablet makes everything look harsh on screen.
  15. The photo is probably from 1977, that's airframe 75-0474 (same as the decals), the 3rd FSD aircraft wearing the (in my mind) best of the development camo schemes. Underwent conversion in 1980/81 to the 2 seat F-16XL, ended up at NASA and was only retired in 2009. A long career for a F-16! I'm working on a 1/32 "what if" A-16 and doing it in this scheme. I'm sure it was this that inspired the underside markings on the Thunderbirds F-16s.
  16. Did lots of test fitting in the cockpit last night to get everything to line up nicely and finished the PE this morning. Just need to bulk out the handles and knobs and then get some paint in there
  17. I won these on eBay tonight from two different sellers within ten minutes of each other so the timing is perfect because I can do a Cuban F-47 The FAEC flew the F-47D-35-RA so I will have to make the dorsal* fin because the kit is an early bubble top without one, but apart from that it'll be OOB. I'm also going to build it wheels up, something I've not done for a long time so it should be a fun project. ***UPDATE*** Now they've been delivered I've updated the photos. * Corrected from ventral, thank you dogsbody for pointing it out
  18. Wiper done! I've left the wire long to hold it while I paint it but it will be cut to the length before attaching .
  19. Reattached the canopy last night but held off making the wiper until I had daylight to do it in, plus I was having fun with PE for the first time on another build This morning I assembled all the parts with no real difficulties, I've left the canopy masking on because I'm still not sure what finish I want. Looking at photos of it in the museum it's very clean so I won't be doing a major wash but I will be doing a little oil and dirt on the undercarriage and in the bays. I was going to give it a coat of Tamiya satin varnish but I think that might dull it too much so I'm probably going to do a final coat of Humbrol Clear. So, nearly there with the aircraft but I might make a base to match the exhibit setting.
  20. You should check out my A-4 group build entry, 16 days in and I'm nearly finished I am called Speedman after all!
  21. Got a fair bit of the PE done tonight. The sidewalls and seats are finished and I've backed the instrument panels with plasticard. I've added the little panel on top of the rear panel and fitted the front rudder pedals as well. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be but it would have helped if the instructions had proper side views of where things go on the side walls. Still got a lot to do to refine the fit of the panels and quite a few levers and knobs to add but I'm getting there.
  22. It's just hand painted, I use a fine but longish brush to do almost all my detail work. It's almost like pinstriping in miniature, and I've had lots of practice detailing my 1/144 & 1/200 stuff. For comparison the photo below shows a cocktail stick, the brush I used (no markings so I've no idea what make or size it is) and a Revell Painta Luxus, size 5/0. The bristles are about twice the length of the Revell detail brush which makes it far easier to draw the paint out along an edge, I even used it to do the tires
  23. Everything is now scribed and I've assembled the wings. I added some strip to the kit "rails" that position the floor to make it easier to test fit, which I'm going to be doing a lot of... I've also removed the instrument panel pegs and filled the injection marks, a bit of green putty followed by a little Mr. Surfacer + some sanding and I've got a nice blank canvas to work with.
  24. I spent most of yesterday working on another project but I painted a few details and got the intake decals on. The intake decals are the only disappointing part of the kit, they're cut straight so curve the wrong way when on and are also too short. Come on Airfix, It can't be that hard to work out the correct shape and length! (Here's a hint, longer and curved forward.) Today I took the canopy back off today so I could apply the black anti-glare decal. I had to cut a section out because of the probe being in the way but I touched it up with a little paint. I also spent some time painting more detail part and added a tail navigation light. I'll spend some time making the windscreen wiper tonight and might glue the canopy back on properly.
  25. Made a bit of a start on this one already. I've scribed the upper wings and starboard fuselage, cleaned up the cockpit floor and seats and I've prepared a few bits of the PE set. Hopefully I'll finish scribing the rest of the kit tomorrow and figure out the fit of the PE in the fuselage, the instructions are a bit vague
