Revell 1/144 North American P-51B Mustang - Completed
Speedman replied to Speedman's topic in The Obsolete Kit Group Build
The nose/kill markings, codes and serial number decals are from Sweet's "Pioneer Mustang" set, the rest are from the kit. The canopy will be getting the cocktail stick treatment tonight. -
Mil-4, need more choppers in this build

Revell 1/144 North American P-51B Mustang - Completed

Primed and painted yesterday. A couple of coats of Humbrol Clear and the canopy on this morning. Now for a bit of detail painting, I've also still got to tackle the awful prop on this one. -

Gun pods fitted, primed, painted, Clear coated and canopy on... Busy day yesterday! -
Revell 1/144 Grumman F6F-3 Hellcat - Completed

I've fitted the ventral tank and made some brace bars/straps to go around it, at the same time I drilled out the gun ports and fitted a few bits of rod. The kit didn't have anything in place at all, no little stumps, not even a set of indents Yesterday I got it primed, painted (hairy stick) and a couple of coats of Humbrol Clear on it and this morning I've fitted the canopy. -
I've finished the little bits and bobs on the Thunderbolt so I should be spraying the first few colours tomorrow. I've also been testing out my printed decals on one of my other projects, the 1/144 A-26 fire bomber conversion. The decals wanted to curl up at the edges but I tried a couple of different water temperatures until the effect lessened. I used the Microscale system film/set/sol with the inkjet paper and they've worked well, now I can get on and finish the fire bomber in the next few days.

Opening this one up and looking at the parts was like stepping back in time! I still remember a lot of the parts on this one so vividly Here are the sprue shots... The tube of "British made" glue still looks good, I remember using these to build a few of my early kits. The profile is far more accurate than I was expecting!

Well, it's my first attempt so I'm keeping my fingers crossed it works. I'm building up a full A4 sheet with sets for some of my other projects that are in the pipeline: 1/144 A-26 Invader fire bomber (fictional), 1/144 Wyvern, 1/144 AD-4NA Skyraider in Chad Mercenary markings, 1/144 C-130A Chad Air Force, 1/72 AH-1G (for this group build) & 1/200 737-200 in Janet Airlines colours. A lot of these projects are on hold or are waiting in the wings so if it works I'll be busy with some interesting stuff very soon!

Another little update, I've painted the prop. Unfortunately the shape is not accurate, the kit came with a 13' Hamilton and my modifications were done to give an impression of the 13' Curtiss asymmetrical props the FAEC used on their F-47s. The boss is also wrong but I didn't want to risk destroying the prop correcting it. The hole for the engine shaft extends into the boss, If I removed the boss it I would have been left with only a thin ring holding the props together and I didn't want to run the risk of that breaking. The tips of the blades had panels lines which made painting them a lot easier.

It is indeed looking stripy! I take it the starboard cannons were de-installed for ease of stripe painting.

Just a small update, I've been doing my thing with Photoshop and knocked up the decal set ready to print. I'm going to cheat with the rudder, paint the whole thing white and decal over the top. It will give me a nice red tone and the clear voids in the print will save messing around with small white stars etc.

That's very true. It's strange that Airfix & Monogram have never done a military reboxing of their kits. (That I'm aware of) The Tri-motor saw service with several countries including the US, UK, Canada & Australia. It's testament to the ruggedness of the aircraft that there's such a high percentage of surviving aircraft. 18 survivors (8 airworthy) may not sound like many but when you consider only 199 were made in the first place it's quite staggering. Fantastically distinctive markings on Old WZ. With the big WZ on the rear fuselage and the huge ones under the wings, it even retained the Ford logo on the fin! Occasionally It even got to go skiing... I came across some footage of the float tests pre-RCAF markings. (Beautiful landing) Youtube link

The final ruling will be down to the hosts of the GB, Enzo Matrix & Col, I was merely bringing my knowledge of the Monogram kit to the thread. The last thing I want to do is stop someone from participating in the build, but I wouldn't want you to build the kit with the possibility of someone pointing out the year of release at a later date. As for the "supersession" rule, if that wasn't in place I should think more than half the kits of the planet would be eligible! Given the amount of reboxings and shared/licenced moulds out there, you can trace the lineage of a vast amount of kits to pre-'83.

1/72 Airfix P-51D update ### Finished 28-11-2013###
Speedman replied to Arniec's topic in The Obsolete Kit Group Build
Looking good Have the parts lined up or has it been a fight? I didn't see a seat in the sprue shots, I take it the pilot just balances on the two big pegs? -
Pilot installed, canopy fitted and it's now got some primer on it. A few things to touch up but nothing too worrying.

Revell 1/144 North American P-51B Mustang - Completed
Speedman replied to Speedman's topic in The Obsolete Kit Group Build
Glad to say this one is better than I expected, although the flash on the prop is proving to be fun Tailplane fitted and finished, they were a very good fit. I've test fitted the canopy, great fit as well although it's not what you would call clear. I'm working on the little bits now, the wing tanks aren't bad at all and the undercarriage is the most detailed of all the Micro Wings kits I've built. -

Tailplanes fitted, filed and sanded. Canopy test fitted, fits well... Made a nice change -
Revell 1/144 Grumman F6F-3 Hellcat - Completed
Speedman replied to Speedman's topic in The Obsolete Kit Group Build
Tailplanes now filled and sanded. I did a test fit of the canopy today, the small rear windows were a poor fit and different sizes so I've chopped them off and will use Kristal Klear instead. I've opened up the aperture for the windows to better replicate the real aircraft as well. I'm working on all the small bit's now and have got the ventral tank together. -

That's a really nice finish -
I hate to be the bearer of bad news but Scalemates were missing a few releases of the Monogram kit. One of the main problems is the scale. Over the years it seems Monogram/Revell shifted it from 1/77 to 1/72 and back again, so the entries for the kit are split. The very first issue was P-15 in 1956 followed by PA-15 in the same year with the only change being the Monogram logo went from "Four star plastikit" to "Quality". The 1968 TWA release (6811) was the first to claim to be 1/72 on the box, but it's a rebox of the 1965 TWA PA122-100 which is of course 1/77. Don't you just love manufacturers when they do stupid things like that. I had a PA-15 in my collection at one point so remembered the year stamped on it and was surprised to find '68 as the earliest entry on Scalemates. I did some research this morning and I've added a couple of kits on there. I did come across a very interesting build review of Airfix vs. Revell (Monogram) on Revell-Ations Link where they had this as well... Sorry again, I know I'm spoiling the party
