  1. I'm now sweating and probably won't be able to sleep tonight now that I've read these posts 🥵 🥵 🥵 Yes, hugely satisfying is a great description, especially the chassis and interior with the photoetch and seatbelts etc.!!
  2. Yes!! they broke up and it's a little messy where it doesn't match up.
  3. Yes, I think I'll give this a go when I have some time and am relaxed!!
  4. Belkits MG Metro 6R4 1/24 (BEL-015) - Stash Order 14 This is the twelth and final build of my stash bash which aimed to reduce my anxiety of too many kits and not enough time and get the stash to a manageable level of 2. Links to the others at the bottom. My newest kit that I really wanted to do justice to. I decided to make a Tony Pond version as I used to work for Roversport parts and had worked with him I actually sold parts for the 6R4 so it was a bit of a nostalgic build. The kit is lovely, and the interior and engine extremely good and a joy to build. Only the rubber HT leads were a bit fiddly, but i got there in the end. The only thing slightly wrong with the interior is I painted the dash counter colour is not quite the right shade, but I can live with it. Some builds I saw had an issue with the steering rack but looking at them I think this is because of a construction error as the instructions could be misinterpreted, mine went together with no problems at all The body though has been sprayed about 3 times, it was almost perfect first time but I had a significant blue overspray on the top of the rear wheel arch, I did think I could sand it off but went through the white to the bare body, got annoyed so stripped and started again. I used Tamya Primer for the white and Zero 6R4 blue, both nice paints. Decalcas provided the decals and these were excellent as were the kit ones. My only reservation is the lettering on the front number plate that looks a bit odd from digit to digit. I decided to try and spray a gloss finish by airbrush after reasonable success with the previous Ferrari. I used Tamiya X22 thinned with Mr Colour levelling thinner. Turned out quite good. I think previously I didn't trust the mist coat thinking it would give a rough finish, but after reading a few good articles and understanding that the newer coat effectively melts the mist coat a little I was more confident to let the mist dry a bit more and then lay that heavier coat with less risk of runs. A bright light was definitely needed though to see that glossy coat. After getting the paint to an acceptable finish I thought I would Klear coat the clear parts, my Klear though must be so old it thickened up and consequently had a thick, uneven layer on the clear parts that I couldn't fully remove and despite polishing isn't quite right, I can live with it, I also lost a couple of bits of photoetch off the built body when polishing. Also after putting all the small parts into a Tupperware box at the bedinning of the build I still managed to lose some of them no idea how!. Strangely the Carpetmonster spat out some (one a good couple of weeks after losing it) I also managed to lose the aerial somehow but was pleased to make one from stretched sprue at about the 10th attempt all the others gave no stretch at all, but one did give a nice one. Also a seat belt name decals came off and when i tried to glue it down it decided to curl over on itself. I have this in a case with an actual 6R4 engine plate that I kept from my old job. Quite pleased with the outcome. Although I don’t have a lot of experience with saloon cars I’d highly recommend the kit. I have a Williams FW14b to build next, which hopefully I'll start soon and take my time with an hope to produce my best one yet! After that a 1/72 lunar module awaits then stash will be done and I'll be free! I may go for the Tiger Moth again or possibly a 1/35 armour, maybe a Sherman as I built a couple when i was younger and enjoyed them, no gloss finish, plus they lend themselves to having a nice diorama too. Links to the others at the bottom. This was one that I had built and was awaiting painting, not sure why i put it up, but it was probably put away because of a failure with another model which led to me putting everything away!! Anyway a quick spray and lengthy decal application got this looking ok, I didn't really put too much stock into getting this build looking top notch, but it's not too bad considering. Just the canopy could be a bit better and a few small fixtures went missing! 6. Airfix MkVb 1/24 Spitfire (A50055A) - Stash Order 4 This is the tenth build of my stash bash which aimed to reduce my anxiety of too many kits and not enough time and get the stash to a manageable level of 2. Links to the others at the bottom. This was a kit I built with my dad when I was younger and I wanted to build this again with my skills learnt as an adult. I even bought some aftermarket parts:- cannons (Master Model), instrument panel (Airscale) harness (HGW) and seat (Grey Matter). This started off really nicely but I think I put it away when I wanted to look into making it a bit better with adding bits to the cockpit. When I revisited it I decided to make it as the Tadeusz Schiele Polish Fighter version as I liked the constellation decals, I'd lost the kit decals somehow. The decals were from Techmod and they were really good, although I managed to damage an upper roundel using masking tape (again!!) so had to mix some red and blue paint by eye to repair it. Not too many problems with the build to be fair, scratch built a bit of the cockpit as it was a bit bare. The resin seat from Grey Matter was very nice and I managed to get a good brown resin look by applying a very runny thinned leather colour mix that gave a nice finish. I really wanted to keep the working functions and this worked ok although the meant keeping the cockpit door closed so I could slide he canopy, articulating it was probably a step too far for me! I did realise after painting it that it was basically impossible to add the engine panels using a push fit. I then bought some very small magnets and used these, it works great and is a nice feeling when they click into place! Just a shame I didn't do this earlier on as it was a bit fiddly doing it on an assembled model. Not sure about the strength of the wheels though. Really pleased with the finish only thing I'm not too sure of is the worn silver on the wing, probably a bit too much. The wheels need a bit of a push to get them to retract in the wheel wells as I put a wall in the recess which reduced the area. The legs also don't have a positive click. The cannons are pretty lovely I think and well worth the money. I don't really have anywhere to keep this so will donate it to a Polish society or similar if I can find one that will have it even if they want to donate it on! Dihedral was done without a spar as I was too far into the build to add it, instead brute force and superglue have given it a dihedral, although I'm not sure if it is enough, but I'm happy with it. Overall a very enjoyable build and I'm very pleased with it and despite not having space the new one from Airfix does look tempting.... 7. Tamiya Ferrari F189 early 1/20 (20023) - Stash Order 1 This is the ninth build of my stash bash which aimed to reduce my anxiety of too many kits and not enough time and get the stash to a manageable level of 2. Links to the others at the bottom. I had this model when it first came out and the red Tamiya rattle can spray was near perfect when I built it, unfortunately I wasn't aware at the time of spraying a gloss coat to protect it and the decals consequently the decals all yellowed terribly. Luckily, they came off easily leaving the red paint in place. Indycals again to the rescue and these went on no problems except for the Fiat ones on the front wing end plates that I messed up after fitting, I think I put masking tape on them after glossing and they peeled off as I should have stuck the masking tape on the cutting mat first to reduce the adhesion. I did need some Marlboro decals as Indycals cannot supply them and managed to find some fairly cheap ones from Spain from a company called Le Mans Decals that came with all the others as well however the Fiat ones are too small for the front wings. I did polish the top surface through the paint a bit after glosscoating, but I would rather live with it than try to spot paint or strip and redo. All in all quite pleased with the refurb. Links to the others at the bottom. This was another kit I bought near the time of release and failed to paint satisfactorily. It originally came with stickers to put on the kit, but these were long gone. I decided to paint it in the FW14b colours without decals and just pretend it was factory fresh awaiting decaling. Then after painting I thought I'd ask Indycals if they could print a set at 1/28 scale. Mike said yes and I was more than pleasantly surprised that they fitted great. Only the stripe was a bit messy, but this was because I just did the paint scheme by eye so the stripes may not have been in the optimum position. Used the Alcald gloss again by brush, but I think too many layers have left it with a bit of a yellow tinge, again I can live with it. Mike is busy so couldn't print me the Nigel Mansell helmet design that is on the Ferrari decal set he produces when I asked. Though I may try him again in the future. Tamiya Newman Haas T93 Lola 1/20 (20040) - Stash Order 2 This is the seventh build of my stash bash which aimed to reduce my anxiety of too many kits and not enough time and get the stash to a manageable level of 2. Links to the others at the bottom. This Model had been the pain of my life! I bought this when it first came out, fresh from a fairly successful build of the Ferrari F189 I thought this would be not too hard to do. How wrong i was! I think the Tamiya red I used to spray the Ferrari must have been sprayed in ideal conditions or possibly the pigment lent itself to better for rattle can spraying than the white and black. Multiple failures and due to a lack of knowledge that you can strip paint from models easily (No internet then!)I actually ended up buying 3 kits over a few years. I had no joy with spraying any and ended up shelving them and not making any models for a few years. After starting again and buying and using an airbrush I decided to go for it again. It still took multiple attempts. I tried various whites, but some looked a bit too yellow. I ended up using Tamiya fine white primer from a rattle can, this gave a lovely hassle-free finish. Next up the black, this also gave me issues which I believe I have subsequently got a better grip of. Mainly me not trusting a couple of mist coats before a heavy coat, as well as a decent light being needed to see the heavy coat. Original decals from all three kits were totally shot so bought some Shunko ones from Spotmodel. However, when I had to mask an area after glossing I managed to pull some off so ordered another set from Indycals ,great service and the decals were pretty good although a touch thick. I then used mostly the Indycal ones. The tyres had white lettering for the first race rather than yellow that they had for the remainder of the season, I can't remember the name of the company I used, but they went on no problem. I tried to make this as the car used in Nigel Mansell's first Indycar car race so added scratch-built cameras. I also had to make the wing mirror struts from wire as all three kits had either dissolved or broken off. I only noticed after building that the rear wing profile was different to the one used in the race at Surfers Paradise, but I can live with it. After adding the decals I lacked confidence to spray a gloss coat so chose to brush apply a few layers of the Alclad gloss which worked reasonably well as it self-levelled reasonably well. It was just the thickness of the decals that meant I probably added more layers than I wanted. I did slightly damage a couple of decals when polishing, but overall, very pleased with the build. I added some aerials from an aftermarket kit for a Mclaren MP4 which finish it off nicely. Links to the others at the bottom. Possibly the fiddliest model kit I have ever done, not helped by me being of an age where eyesight is not that good! I got to the point where I had no patience for this so quickly finished it. Not helped by me picking up and spraying the wrong shade of blue. I only really realised when I put the paint pot away and noticed that I already had it! After gluing the cockpit window on I think it must have been statically charged as it seems to have picked up a load of dust and debris. I may just pull it off and give it a clean or throw it away!! Links to the others at the bottom. This was supposed to be a fairly quick build and conversion to a DUCK tourist boat called "Back Bay Bertha" as used in Boston, USA which I had the good fortune to have a long drive on when on a tour as no one else wanted to have a go! Started all ok but the sprayed paint ended up very grainy (Possibly because the Vallejo paint was very old and probably needed thinning a bit more), So I decided to go from a pristine version to a bit of a grimy one. Then after scratch building a frame for the canopy my laptop slid off something and crushed it. Grrr. Back in the box for a while before I revisited this, however, typically the frame was not as good as the first time. Unfortunately, I don't have the ability to print white decals so It'll have to go without the companies logos. Links to the others at the bottom. Had this in the stash for a few years, started and stopped a few times, nt sure of all the reasons, Used AXM paper-models version as a guide to how it should look with markings and colours etc. as they are very well researched. This was built as Discovery STS-91 as I actually saw this launch in person. Used a combination of New Ware, Airfix, Hot Dog and another company who I cannot remember (These are the blueish looking tile decals on the upper surface which may be because time affected them!). The Hot Dog one were for the surface underneath, these look great but not really seen! This was one of the reason for delay as I saw Hot Dog were going to produce some but nothing appeared for a while, but I emailed them and they had actually been producing them for a while. I'm reasonably happy with this build apart from the main tank which is a little too orange. I made some alterations to the tail and also added strips to the main tank rather than use the decal. I had issues with the white on the orbiter as I managed to smudge some black paint on it, so had to touch up carefully. I made a base to look like the other Airfix 1/144 space model bases. Two dowels go through the base and into the SRB's to keep it upright. I also glued the connector on the main tank to allow it to be posed as in flight on the black stand. Only let down by the very thick decals that even Microsol and Microset couldn't help with. Tried a bit of weathering and application of silver for edging wear. 14. Airfix Mustang P 51D 1/72 - Stash Order 9 This is the second build of my stash bash which aimed to reduce my anxiety of too many kits and not enough time and get the stash to a manageable level of 2. Links to the others at the bottom. This was a kit my son got from an Airfix day but I considered it a stash item of mine as he is now 10 years older and showing no signs of doing it.! Quickly built and I used decals from Warbird, which were very good but a touch fragile. I brush coated the Windsor and Newton gloss on this but it pooled a bit , not enough for me to worry about though. 15. This is the first build of my stash bash which aimed to reduce my anxiety of too many kits and not enough time and get the stash to a manageable level of 2. Links to the others at the bottom. Having built up a stash of half-built kits I made a determined effort to finish them as the anxiety of an increasing stash was too much. I don't know how some of you can keep so much, I did have to lower my expectations to achieve this though. This was the first of the stash I finished I bought this as the Skylab version as couldn't get a Saturn V version at the time. Was well on the way making this, very enjoyable build until the whole stack fell as i was spraying it, broke the connecting lugs and split the sides. Put it in the box until I determined to finish my stash. I had originally bought the New Ware decals but some of these broke up as I had had them so long so used the original ones as well. If I were to do again I think I'd buy the photo etch too. Hard to photograph as its very tall! Used some metal foil on the lander as I have the Airfix 1/72 version to build so thought I'd see what it was like. Ideally I'd like a 1/144 Apollo moon surface suited astronaut to put at the bottom for scale (Like the cosmonaut that comes with the R7/Vostok). Unfortunately, as it was the Skylab version the decal for the nameplate is missing so it looks a bit odd, although I keep looking out for one on Ebay! As you will see, my photographic skills leave a lot to be desired Links to other builds in the Stash Bash:- Airfix BAE Hawk 1/72 (A03073) - Stash Order 8 - Not built as all the decals broke and I wasn't happy with the silver finish - Binned! 16. I'll be following this as I'm tempted to do one for the Mrs as its her favourite car. Just got to finish 7 or 8 odd kits I've had for years first.
  17. Fantastic job, looking forward to progressing mine just got to get a bit of confidence spraying!
  18. Thank you, I'll have a good read!
  19. Currently trying to get back into modelling after a few fits and starts. I'm currently doing a couple of cars and have hit my nemisis in gloss paint. Recently had good result with Alclad Gloss white undercoat. Not wishing to tempt fate by adding a topcoat, is it OK to leave this as the only coat apply decals and then a top gloss coat?. My main concern is yellowing. I have bought Zero 2k gloss, but unsure if this yellows, or is even too shiny! Think I may need to strip and go again on a couple of pieces. These look almost as if my mist coat dried grainy and the wet coats are not thick enough to cover them! Airbrushing BTW. Could well have been issues with a slightly clogged tip though. Bought Zero gloss white, but seems to have a slight creaminess to it. So I could, if needed, strip all and go again with a Tamiya white or Alclad matt white and filler and then decal and gloss coat if this is better I realise I've waffled on, there appears to be so much to applying a decent gloss coat effectively, but I've got to crack it, had many attempts at one kit over 25 years always end up putting it away and not doing much for 3 or 4 years each time! Hopefully will finish it this year!!
  20. You're right about mojo, I'm also doing a T93 Lola indycar that I've had over 25 years and always fail on numerous times with gloss painting. I think preperation and patience are coming to me with age! Alclad gloss primers have gone down OK on the Lola, got some zero paints for the 6R4. Also got Zero 2K gloss, but a bit worried now about it being too glossy! BTW I think the front spoiler does need to be a bit more yellowy.
  21. That's looking great, I've folded and got mine out and made a start (I've now got about 6 models in the go) looking forward to the next installment
  22. You sound like me, I've just finished the bedrooms! I've bought some Tony Pond decals and the paints. Just a load of other models to finish first now, trying to resist just making this one first
  23. Is it this one? https://www.spotmodel.com/product_info.php?products_id=12893
  24. Coming along very nicely indeed. I also agree re spraying.
  25. Looking good. Going to be a while until I start my one though. Did you glue the exhausts at all in step 2? Looking at the instructions initially I couldn't see what they meant by don't glue yet. But I now think after your troubles it means no glue on any part of the exhausts, not just where they meet. When looking at the diagram the dot and dash line is on all parts, but the do not glue yet text only points to where they meet.
