  1. Right. I’m going to finish this thread now. Right up to the end these were fighting me. Biggest disaster was that for some reason the paint, specifically the clear coats, refused to cure and remained tacky. Above and beyond the colour coats that already gave me this issue. And this was with two different clear coats; one being a Mr Color and one Tamiya, all with their respective thinners. I was very close to stripping the paint of the MD530F, but in the end I parked the models on the workbench and focussed on my other hobby of painting on canvas. Final task was to add a few aerials to all of them and a sling hook on the MD520N. Then some very light darkening of select panel lines. Otherwise I am going to keep these clean. Fate also interfered royally in the last stages. But guess that is life. Don’t want to sound superstitious, but I hope with me finishing this build the universe will take note and let things calm down a bit. I started with the first steps on the Italeri kit in December 2009 – and the time since then have been the most turbulent in my life. Both good and bad. Anyway, cheers to the completion of my longest build. Here some photos. Might do a RFI when having a bit of time, light and good camera.   3. She most probably departed the world by now. When we got her we estimated her to be 3 years old. And that was 7 years ago. They usually are lucky to make it to 7 years. My inlaws now permanently live on the patch of land we released her on, and they regularly report seeing Chameleons - so we allways hope it is one of her decendants!
  4. You gave me an idea there.... I have the ESCI kit (looks like the same mould as yours) in the stash. Was planning on doing it in the version of the actual test flights, but completely forgot about the story in Clancy's book. Nicely executed! 🙂 R
  5. Progress. Despite the fight each end every step of the way. Painting is mostly complete for the overall paint work. The decals on the MD 520N have also been applied – these are custom printed decals that are the fine black lines and the blue. The blue sections were printed half transparent, the idea being that it would take on the metallic sheen from the base colour. It actually worked! The metallic sheen on all of the helicopters does unfortunately not show all that well on the photos. But in reality they actually look really sparkling and colourful.   6. Definitely involved in a Tango with these three models.... Very much a love / hate relationship – very satisfying to build them, but they seriously are seriously putting up a fight... Back and forth – I complete a step, only for me to have to reverse and try a different path.... Start / stop – life is interfering. Long story. So, what happened. After dusting them lightly with Tamiya white surface primer two things happened: One, the paint refused to cure and remained tacky for weeks. Why I do not know, I tested the thinner / paint combination before hand and it cured rock solid. Such is chemistry I guess. On the MD520N I resorted to stripping the paint off, while for out of desperation I lightly dusted the MD600N and MD530F with Tamiya rattle can surface primer. That kicked the curing process into gear and the paint dried within a matter of hours. The other thing the surface primer taught me was that the intake mesh on the NOTAR fan intakes was too solid once paint was applied. So I re-evaluated and came up with a very fine nylon mesh that gave a much better representation. Was also a bit easier to glue on, as it could be tacked in place with Extra Thin, before little by little using cyno and my trusty magnifiers to permanently bond them in place. Then I started with the masking. For the MD600N I wanted to do a scheme that has a stylised eagle on the rear fuselage. For this I did the necessary artwork on in scale PowerPoint and printed it out in black and white. Then I lay some Tamiya masking tape over the logos and used a sharp blade to cut out the profiles, following the high contrast logo. Helps if one uses magnifying glasses..... The eagle is to be in gold, so I first sprayed a light gold on the required area, before properly positioning the masks. Then I lightly sprayed the model with Humbrol 20 “Crimson” and then a decent coat of Tamiya metallic Mica Red, decanted from the rattle can. This is the result: For the MD520N I needed a sort of white-silver as the base colour. Mixing white to silver in enamels just ends up with a dull grey. So I gave acrylics a try (still something very new to me when it comes to using it for scale models). This works a bit better, and I eventually got something more or less as to what I aimed for. Not without its trial and errors though. And I learned that a cold and wet day, is not a good day to spray acrylics.... The scheme I chose for the MD530F involved masking a number of fine lines. I even learned that i could do this type of fine masking using the built in lamp of my magnifier goggles and an emergency lamp during load-shedding (yes, I live in THAT country). There is a bit of under-spray on the fine lines, but this is not a problem as these will get painted silver and bronze, with the belly remaining white. On all of the models there is of course some cleaning up to do. And then the final detail painting. Also the masking fluid I used on the canopy has dulled the previously applied dark tint. But a final coat of gloss clear should take care of that. I also painted the rotors – these are still in the process of un-masking. Here is the first one though, fitted to the MD600N: R
  7. A week back I did the masking on the trio. Took a whole weekend, but is is done: And now also completed the last major assembly steps. They are now ready for the paint-shop. I did give them a dusting of white primer to show up faults, and then assembled skids, tail-booms etc. The rotors are just held in place by friction for the photo. I feel decidedly excited – this part of them being in final assembly seemed to bee all too elusive. Remember I started the first one in December 2010, then added the other two and backtracked a bit because of that. By any luck I might get the first proper coats of paint on this long weekend. R
  8. Slowly getting back to this one.... Currently trying again to spend at least 5 minutes every day doing “some” modelling. Sort of a way to force progress and more importantly to mentally force me to relax. Had all intentions on making major strides on this build during the December holidays. My intention for the (summer) holidays were to stay at home, restore woodwork in the house, complete a commission painting and build models. In other words leave the car in the garage and definitely do not spend any money. A wine tour in the hills behind the house with the wife and my mother was all I was prepared to do outside of my man-cave. But that was not to be. Lets say the holidays ended up with an emergency trip to Namibia (they broke into my mom’s place); while a trip to Namibia is always top of my list of things I love to do (it will always be my home), the circumstance was less than pleasant. But it did not end there, the gearbox of my VW Scirocco ended up having a “few bearings” to be replaced while there, at the cost of ¼ of the cars value. Excluding the plane tickets back to South Africa. To say I am not impressed is an understatement. Anyway, that is my excuse for the no progress. So here is the latest progress. First off was the big challenge of fitting the canopy. Have to admit this was a daunting task of fitting the home made vac-formed parts. I did manage to get the 3 canopies to fit nicely, the problem however was that the all were slightly warped. This necessitated the canopies to be glued in stages. Cyano has the usual dangers of fogging, thus I used to tack it in place at the beginning when ventilation was sufficient. But for the main glue work I used a product called “Gorilla Glue Clear”. This glue is advertised as bonding “anything” – cant vouch for that as it is the first time I used it, but id does glue vac-formed canopies! The glue dries absolutely crystal clear. So much that it is challenging to see if there is a glue join or not. It also has some gap filling properties, which by the nature of home made vac-formed parts is quite handy. The draw-back of the Gorilla Glue is that it takes 2 hours to start setting. That made the time-step gluing of the parts a bit difficult. What I ended up doing was to hold the canopy in place with tape and proceeded to the next section after two hours. A relaxing Sunday was spent doing that, with the time in-between spent in front of my easel. To see how the joint looks when painted I trial-masked the MD530 and gave it a thin coat of white Tamiya primer. The result of the method of gluing is quite acceptable (at least to my eyes – that I hate to admit to my increasing frustration are starting to show signs of ageing.... ). A bit of clean up was required, but all within norms. That done I proceeded to add all the doors of the MD600 in preparation for the first coats of paint. From here the plan is to first spray the canopy and side windows with a darkened clear varnish. Then do the masking, followed by assembling the skids and tail pieces. That way the fragile pieces are protected from the man-handling during the masking process. In theory at least... R

Maybe also a bit late to the party regarding the decals - I have never managed to get any of the decal solutions (including the "Tamiya Mark Fit Psycho strength") to give any result that water on its own would not give. Regardless of make of decals. Maybe there is a seecret voodoo dance that one has to do that no one dares to mention on the instructions or the web....? Either way, I prefer a 50/50 mix of water and white glue. The slowish drying time of that solution under the decal somehow makes it soft and strechy. I managed to get single decals to conform to very compund curves without effort. Also, the high shrinkage of the glue mix causes the by now soft decal to be pulled into and around any surface detail. Only slight drawback is the cleaning of excess glue afterwards, but that is done quickly with a moistened cloth. My 2c of shared experience. 🙂
  10. Small update of a major step. I finally got around to making the grids that cover the intakes of the NOTAR fan. Took a while for me to find a mesh that had a more or less correct sizing. I got this one from the mesh of a coffee plunger that exploded on me. (Talk about a bad start to the day when the coffee plunger explodes first thing in the morning...) The mesh is just put into position on the photos. Still need to figure out how to bond them in place without unintentionally filling in the mesh with glue....
  11. Greetings to the Garden Route! As for the six-bladed rotor head. I obviously built mine from scratch. Should be easier though in 48. And then there is the 3D printing option (see below). Thanks for the insights! Seems to be quite similar to the 520N in terms of limitations. The calculations I did on the NOTAR / CIRSTEL systems seemed to indicate that the system can be fitted quite comfortably to the smaller helicopters. Was always wondering how far one can scale the thing up. But as you said, if you planing on doing lots of hovering in challenging conditions one is better of with a big tail rotor. The NOTAR is really more ideal for the executive type transport, not for mountain winch rescues... Got a bit side-tracked - was let loose on the companies 3D printer and made one of these: The Creality one we have is not the latest and greatest - but man, what a fun thing to have! Amazing what one can coax out of this with just a bit of planning on how to orientate and support the parts... So, guess my next investment is already decided. Will hang on though till the point when I really need it, the pace at which these improve makes the patience game worth the while. As to the current build - it will remain pure, traditional scratch-building I completed all the rotor assemblies, including the shafts. Something that I insist on with my models is that props and rotors must be able to turn. So I made the shaft assembly so that a metal rod can run inside the kit supplied part and gets fixed to the main rotor. Also on the skids I added a piece of wire where they join the fuselage. A normal but-joint is too weak for my liking, hence the piece of wire that locks the assembly more structurally sound into the fuselage. And this is where I am at.   12. We get asked a lot about the Chameleons and how they express emotions. They are actually very expressive animals, but express themselves in their body language, movement and of course colour of their skin. Very much like an actor in a theater stage production, where facial expression is difficult to convey, they rely on movement and body posture. Really fascinating to see! Regarding you "better and worse" statement - please do tell! Through my research in the post graduate years a read a number of papers and articles on the handling quirks of the MD520N, but never saw anything on the 900 series. Was always wondering how the NOTAR performed on the heavier and more powerful helicopter? R
  13. Time to restart this thread. The reason I stopped last time is two fold, firstly the kits were fighting me every step of the way. So I got a bit irritated and the so called mojo was disappearing fast. The second reason was this little fella: This flapped Chameleon came to us as a rescue pet; some $%^&#%! thought it would be a good idea to burn out her eyes with a cigarette. Chameleons basically rely completely on sight, they don’t have a sense of smell or much in the sense of hearing. So this situation really had my anger-meter in the red for all of humanity and while I was working on the kits the evening after getting her, she totally freaked out when I switched on the Dremel tool. As a result I lost focus and cut through a rotor blade that I was trying to thin down a bit. That was the last straw. The next couple of evenings I spent all my time with the Chameleon from the point of coming home. She refused to let go of my fingers when it really was time for bed. I was basically the only comfort for her in that terrible time. Eventually DD (short for Dare Devil) got accustomed to the house and started to blindly wander around until she’d find a spot of sun. She also learned that a light tap on he mouth meant open wide, food is being served! Then one Saturday morning I was having a bit of a late lie-in, when I saw her cruising around the bedroom floor and parked herself when she got to the usual sun spots. I thought I’d better get up myself and noticed her flinching when I moved. That was odd. Upon closer inspection I found that one of the scabs on her eyes had lifted to reveal a perfect eye ball underneath. Wow, what a relief! She was not condemned to be completely blind. Over the next few weeks the other scab also lifted. Here however the eyelids fused together most of the way. Fortunately I found a vet that specialises on reptiles who was willing to give it a try to fix the fused eyelids. First prize for me was always to release her again into the wild, but was not willing to do that unless here eyes were functioning to a suitable level that she can fend for her self. The vet agreed with me on that one, and after DD throwing her antics in surgery (she refused to be sedated), we took a very sulky chameleon home. She was still sulking bitterly the next morning about that trip to the vet, but that changed instantly when breakfast was served and she realised she had full 3D vision again for the hunt. She was one excited chameleon! The only time I saw her more exited was the day we released her. My in-laws own a patch of land in a bio-reserve that is closed off to the public. So perfect safe place for her to be released back into her habitat. Not easy to say goodbye, as I gotten quite fond of her, her mischief, moods and generally being goofy. For years I still, when entering my study in the mornings, I’d instinctively look at the spot on the curtain rail where she grew the habit of sleeping... So back to my MD helicopters. What changed since I last worked on them....? Well, the world has gotten to be a “more interesting” place to live.... There was that great Photobucket purge... My eyesight is not what is used to be.... And those rotor blades still put up a good fight..... The problem with the rotor blade that got a gash in from the Dremel mishap is that any pit of plastic that I use to fix the hole causes the blade to warp. Or rather the Tamiya Extra Fine causes it due to being applied on only one side. Eventually I laminated a 0,13 mm thin sheet of Evergreen styrene top and bottom of the blade to hopefully give a symmetric loading. For the moment I was declaring victory. Then it warped again and I had the bright idea to use boiling water to straighten it. Bad idea: So I settled on attaching a strip of styrene from my Evergreen selection: Other things I worked on was adding the very prominent ventral vent underneath the engine bay that is not featured in any of the kits. And stretching the skids for the MD600. At first I did not know how to approach the problem. Build new ones, just replace the skid part with wire? Not expecting it to work, I first just tried the simple rout of cutting the skid just ahead of the rear leg, and gluing an 11 mm extension of styrene rod in. Once cured in a jig, I coated it with cyano and sanded smooth. Seems to have worked. And also the figures that I want to add to the kits are nearing finishing:

  15. Here some photos of my rendition of the 1/72 scale ESCI AB 205 Huey in UNTAG colours. UNTAG was the name given to a UN group that oversaw the implementation of UN Resolution 435; the transition of the then South West Africa to the independent country of Namibia. Thus also being the last African colony to gain independence in 1990. UNTAG consisted of various contingents from all over the world, amongst others Germany, Australia, Spain, Italy to name a few. Italy’s contribution to the effort was amongst others a couple of Hueys. They were initially intended for use in logistical purposes, but were pressed into service much more urgently in medi-vac and similar mopping up operations, as the peace / independence process go off to a shaky start. With the peace deal between South Africa, Cuba, and SWAPO signed and sealed, and the South African forces being disarmed and retreated as per agreement, the so called liberation fighters from SWAPO thought it would be a good idea launch a full invasion attempt on day one of the transition period when the UN took over the administration of South West Africa. In the following clashes with the hastily re-armed South African forces, the SWAPO fighters suffered heavy losses. The UN had its hands full tending to the mess, with the Hueys being used to ferry casualties. When said casualties were not too severe, the liberation fighters were unceremoniously dumped back at their bases in Angola where they were supposed to be according to the peace agreement. The “incident” became known as the “April fools party”, as the first day of the transition was 1st April 1989. Anyway, these Italian Hueys were the first Hueys that I ever saw, never mind heard! Hence the choice of this particular scheme. The model is basically built straight from the box. Albeit being the second time, as I restored this model. I added minor details here and there, such as the ventilation louvres on the engine cowling and the antennas specific to this version. The only problems I had with the kit were the clear parts. Never mind the glue marks from the previous build, they were just too small to really fit. I guess that during the molding process the dwell time or pressure or a combination of such was wrong so that the parts shrank post injection. The side windows I could glue in using gelled cyanoacrylate glue to fill the gaps. However, the windshield was too far out. Therefore, I used the original to create a male former for a vacu-formed replacement. The decals are home printed – hands down the easiest print yet, as they all are black or red on a white background. So no juggling for color compensation etc. The red cross in the window is a print out on paper (as the original appears to be) held in place with some future. I kept the weathering relatively low, as they were delivered all clean. Just added a hint of exhaust staining on the tail boom, gave the walkway on top of the fuselage, rotor blades, and panel lines a wash of dirty white. The dirty white weathering stemming from the white dust that is so characteristic of Ovamboland, where the April Fools Party operations took place. R
  16. I have many, many hours on the Tomahawk..... Albeit as non-paying ballast as my best friend did most of his hour building on them. Where have those good times gone!? As to the offset tail - I have never noticed it as being offset. As an aerodynamicist and scale modeller I am sure I would have noticed that. Also as you stated, for the 100-odd horses installed it is not worth making the tooling to build a non-symetrical tail on the full scale one. My guess is that the offset on your model is an artefact of the resin curing. R
  17. Here some pictures of my recently completed Airfix F-2H Banshee in 1/72. The model is effectively built straight out of the box as intended. It is actually a very neat little kit with some very fine detail on the landing gear for example. Only real changes I made was to re-scribe the fine raised panel lines (many a fine zoom meeting was spent re-scribing while listening to others’ need for self-aggrandizing bog….). Also I replaced the canopy with a Falcon vac-formed one as the original one had a rather obvious and severe crack in it. The model actually is a restored kit as it is one of the early kits that I built, when I got into this hobby just after starting school, hence there were some parts that needed a bit of re-building or replacing. Fortunately, I never applied the decals, and I still had them in perfect condition. From my research the fin tip should be light blue and, not red, as the instructions tell. Otherwise, the decals and instructions are really spot on. Some weathering was applied as carrier borne aircraft tend to weather fast, but I did not want to overdo it and rather have the model just feature the nice dark blue scheme with contrasting white markings.   18. Here are two of my renditions of Vampires in 1/72 that I completed recently. The single-seater is the Heller kit. It is actually a restoration effort of a model I built pre-teenage years. This Vampire I got on the insistence of my dad when I started to get a liking in the hobby. Needless to say my, modelling skills were not great then, and the thing that annoyed me the most was that the model was a tail sitter despite having some lead in the nose. Therefore, I ended up building the kit wheels up. And moved on to the next project. Fast-forward 30-odd years and I have taken a liking to restoring all the models I built decades ago. So I cleaned off the paint with brake fluid which also loosened the glue joints, thus I effectively had a “new” kit on my hands. The two seater is the Airfix kit, and I built it effectively straight out of the box. The two kits I built in parallel, with the Heller kit receiving a bit of extra attention by scribing the raised panel lines and scratching the landing gear. Fortunately, I still had the original main wheels in the spares box; while the nose gear I fashioned from a copy of the Airfix one. Here I used Oyumaru to make the mould and cast the part using two-component epoxy adhesive. The colours I chose for the Vampires are both of South African Air Force. The single seater (FB Mk5) as they looked ca 1960, and the two seater (T.55) as the one currently being a flying example of the SAAF museum. The decals are a mix of kit decals, after market and self-printed. Weathering I kept to a minimum, as the Museum aircraft is of course well tended to, and the few photos of the operational aircraft I did find, did not show much in the name of wear and tear. If I may, a dedication of these two models: When I started building these two kits in December 2020 I could not help but think of the two persons I know who flew Vampires. Maj. Gen (Ret.) Des Barker and Col (Ret.) Rama Iyer. Gen Barker flew Vampires after obtaining his wings (bit of a step down from the Atlas Impala he had as ab-initio trainer). Gen Barker would continue on to fly with the Silver Falcons, flew combat missions in Angola with Canberra and graduated from the Empire Test Pilot School, eventually ending up as chief test pilot in the SAAF. As test pilot he was the first to fly the Cheetah D and later the Cheetah C aircraft, just amongst many other achievements as an experimental test pilot. He retired from the SAAF as Chief of Staff. As his first tenure as civilian he headed up the Aeronautics Research group in SA, where he also became my boss. He continued to be a driver in the global aerospace industry, notably being a recognised expert on air-show safety (published two books on the topic) and became a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society. Col Iyre started off in the Indian Air Force, flying Hunters and the MiG-21. He came to South Africa to instruct on the newly introduced Hawk Mk120 and started to fly the Vampire for the Museum. He loved flying the Vampire; he called it his 60% aircraft: according to Museum regulations, he has allowed 60% max RPM, 60% max airspeed and 60% max g loading. He roared with laughter when I asked him if he was still allowed to fly with 60% instrument functionality. Both Gentlemen were killed in March 2021 when they crashed on short finals in a Museum aircraft they were flying.   21. I would also caution against using plasticine in conjunction with plastic. The plasticene contains oils and plasticiser, that will leach into the styrene plastic over time and, well, plasticise (soften) the plastic. R

  23. This is my Academy F-104G in 1/72. Yes, that Academy kit. I got the kit long ago – late 80’s round about. I built it, thought it was funny looking but left it at that. Lately I started to restore the models I built long ago. And as this model has a number of fond memories attached, I decided to restore it. Now I knew about the canopy, but when comparing the model parts to scale drawings some more things popped up. - The next obvious thing is the banana shape of the fuselage, along with being too wide and too deep. - Air intakes are too far back, though the intake cones are correctly positioned. - Shape of the vertical tail leading edge is too curvy - Tip and drop tanks too small - As already mentioned, weird canopy - Not an error as such, but no cockpit or wheel bay features. Otherwise the kit is actually very neatly done, with accurate and very fine recessed panel lines. For some reason I relish building, scratching and correcting these types of kits, rather than get one of the perfect kits. The already built kit was paint-stripped with brake fluid, which also loosened the glue joints. So in effect, I had a new kit to re-build. The fuselage shape I corrected by cutting of the tail section at the wing’s trailing edge, for later re-positioning to a less banana shape fuselage. Here one can now see the oval cross-section of the fuselage, where it should be perfectly round. To fix this I trimmed off about 2.5 mm from each fuselage half along the centre split line in the fuselage mid section, tapering this off to zero at the nose and tail section. This operation also helped to reduce the depth of the fuselage. Other details, like the length and diameter of the fuel tanks were fixed with styrene tubes and filler. Here is the model prior to painting. Everything in white indicates a modification. Though not limited to… The cockpit tub, ejection seat and instrument panel I scratch built. Didn’t add a lot of detail. Only the instrument panel is a colour printout of a photo of the instrument panel. The pilot figure in the characteristic orange flight suit basically dominates and obscures everything else. The canopy is a project on its own. The kit canopy “bubble” has scribing on the inside, and blank on the outside. This made me think that perhaps the inside could be of the correct shape, and that the spark eroding tool got mixed up when the molds were made, necessitating a crude fix…? An epoxy glue cast from the inside of the canopy revealed a “reasonable” shape of the canopy, but still not accurate… I eventually 3D printed a canopy that fits the thinner fuselage, made a female mold off it for vacu-forming the final replacement canopy. Here a comparison: rear the fogged-up kit canopy, in front of that the mentioned epoxy plug of the kit canopy interior, the 3D printed plug and the first vacu attempt in front of that. To the right is the female mold I used to make the canopy. I decided to go the female mold route to see if I replicate the surface detail on the canopy. And here the final result. Paints were mostly Humbrol, and decals home printed, as I did not have suitable spares. Thanks for having a look. R
